This Forum Software Can't Post or Reply Privately

There have been a couple of threads regarding minor issues with the forum in last few days.

There are two reasons why forum problems like this appear to some users and not others.
One are roguue adverts. These are not exclusive to this site just because you don't happen to have seen them elsewhere yet. The NLM ad feed comes from the same source as thousands of other sites.

The other is your setup that you are using as the forum software is so old that when an operating system upgrade happens it causes a problem like the 'you have been banned' that affected some users previously. This went away not because I did anything but because the software issuers recognised that it caused a problem to legacy software and issued a patch to fix it that you wouldn't even have noticed.
Now we can either keep the forum software as it is and accept that problems like this will occur occasionally and just suck them up or we can move to a completely new platform that has regular software updates and keeps on top of all the changes.

It will require everyone re-registering as there is no import facility to new software from this that I know of. It will look completely different as these templates are unique to this forum software but I can recreate all the current sections as they are but it will still have the same adverts so it won't solve that half of the problem.

The old forum would be archived but stay online and the new one would take over. No forum posts would be lost, it would all still be accessible on the archived site

It's over to you guys and girls and anyone not identifying as either... tell me what you would like me to do with your forum or ask me any questions so we can work out what to do..... I'm not too fussed either way.

Cheers..... Steve

Re: [dottirofhod] This Forum Software [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

The argument against the status quo is the legacy software will get farther and farther behind industry norms. The errors seen by some will keep escalating and patching will be needed so frequently one day even the developers may call time on it. Do we bite the bullet and transfer now before this happens, or do we wait until the whole thing is so out of date it just begs to be put out of its misery.

I vote for sooner rather than later.

I have no probs with this, I myself have not suffered too much (touches wood} with these pesky problems we've had but if we can get an update on this it could well be worth it in the long run.
But all a question of cost.
Begging bowl again Steve? No problem if absolutey essential to get an upgrade.

Re: [steve walker] This Forum Software [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

I'm open minded on this, probs. 55/45 in favour of newer software, though.

My major query is this - will archived pages (inc. TK's old content) remain accessible as the older platforms drop further & further out of the reach of the newer technologies? I guess this is VHS/DVD question repeated...

Re: [Mister TwoU] This Forum Software [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

There is no reason why new forum software should incur any cost at all. There are plenty of free software packages out there. Personally I would be looking at paid for software as they are normally linked in to resources that can expand the forum into more of a community hub rather than just a forum. For instance hosting blogs, hosting image galleries etc etc. If we are going to do an upgrade then lets do it properly with a view to the future even.
No there will be no begging bowl, ad revenue will cover it as there will be more content.
The archived forum ie this current one would remain online. It's just that all the threads would be read only. I don't think there is anything to fear from them suddenly becoming unreadable, the software issues are all to do with posting not with reading. If the general concensus would be to go ahead with this upgrade then I would envisage keeping this forum open for a couple of weeks after the new one opened so that info threads for instance the Cup Competitions posts for the current season could be cut and pasted into the new forum threads.

I don't host the content on the old TK site so I have no control over that. It's presumably paid for by his family with whom I do not have contact. If they wanted me to transfer the site onto the NLM server I would happily do so, I could do it now but wouldn't without their permission.

I think it's a good idea. One suggestion I'd like to make is that if we all have to re-register, it should be compulsory for us all to use our real names as our posting names, as a few posters currently do (John Treleven and Leo Hoenig for example) as this would hopefully encourage responsible posting and deter online abuse/bullying.

I will not use my correct name on line, as long as real name is given in re-registering { if necc} and on line can use what we already know each other as will be fine surely.
You'll need to get rid of all your other accounts you have in stock.
I'm afraid you see bullying when its not there 'snowflake'.

Obviously I cannot enforce that.

You may want to re-register under your current forum name for the sake of continuinity between both forums but that's up to you. I can't see why anyone would not want to.

Some years ago, another non-league forum changed its policy and made everyone re-register and post under their real name. I was perfectly happy to comply with this, and from that point onwards, I started posting on that forum under my real name. If someone refuses to make their real name public, it may suggest that they have something to hide.

A bit rich from someone who has posted under at least 15 different aliases, often concurrently, and has been banned mutiple times for unacceptable posts.

Going back to the original question, I have no strong view either way.

Re: [Chris1963] This Forum Software [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

I'm fairly neutral on the issue. From a user point of view the forum doesn't need to be that fancy. It's the content that matters and it's easy enough to search on here for past experiences on a particularly ground (for example).

I've not been struck with too many issues, but if it makes it easier to manage then it could be worthwhile. But as it won't be a case of transfering things over, should a move be made, wouldn't it be best to do it over the close season when the forum is quieter.

Re: [steve walker] This Forum Software [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

There'll come a point where replacing the forum software becomes the best option but I guess you're best placed to know when that day arrives.

It really is an excellent forum and without you it would no longer be running. Thank-you.

Thinking through what we have I like the presentation, how easy it is to post, track the threads that I want, search recent and old threads, exchange information.

Hopefully all that can be retained in a new version - it's more important to me than additional functionality.

That said if you are open to ideas for a new version I offer two for consideration.

1. The possibility to create polls.
2. The possibility to designate threads as information or discussion. Or maybe sections instead of threads. And moderate them differently - to a certain degree automatically.

Minor issues that seem to sort themselves out. OK not great at the time but is it worth changing things? If the majority who offer an opinion disagree then fine but leave it until the summer as others have said when things are less hectic.

Steve, whoever you decide, I trust you enough that there will not be the same result as happened to the Nomad Forum when it was changed.

I don't think I ever visited there. What happened to the Nomad forum that was so bad? Genuine question as I wouldn't want to make the same mistakes.

It's a difficult one is this. If I want to preserve this forum for the next 10 or 20 years then my gut tells me we have to have a software change. My head tells me don't be so daft, it will cause disruption and maybe some angry forum users that won't re-register plus it's a hell of a lot of work/time to set up a new one that mirrors this as close as possible.

This software is 15 years old and will not be updated, there will come a point where we will have to move on at some point. It may aswell be now in my opinion it will take a few weeks anyway to get it right as I don't have a lot of time spare at the moment.

I understand the do it in the summer suggestion but to be honest the forum isn't much quieter in the summer due to all the restructuring and AGM shenanigans. Nothing is decided... still open to and hoping for more feedback from forum members. I'm certainly not going to go into this change without majority consent.

Re: [steve walker] This Forum Software [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Hi Steve
First things first. I was not a member of the Nomad Forum but read it at least once a day and often more. The following observations are therefore made on that basis.

During the close season, the "owner" of the site announced that he considered the existing format was out of date and he intended to relaunch with a different host. Unlike you he proceeded without any (to me) consultation with members.

The new format was totally different to the previous and in my opinion difficult to understand.

The only use made of the new forum was the match forecasting "competition" which lasted only a few weeks. Other regular contributors were notable by their absence for reasons I can speculate on.

In less than a month the Forum disappeared from the internet without any warning.

I believe the membership here will stay loyal as long as they understand and like the new format which in my opinion was not the case here in Sussex

I think that new forum software will be a learning curve for alll of us, me included. It's a bit scary to be honest. The easy option is to keep things as they are and I can still do that,
I would replicate all of the current forum categories on the new one so it should be pretty seamless but obviously there will be be problems... I don't know what they are until they arise but I'm prepared to go through that process if forum members are

I think it would be good to update before something really major happens. If people cannot access the forum for a while then they will forget about it and not come back once the problem has been fixed. I guess that when we had a problem with "You are banned" messages, we might have lost some people permanently.

If the move to a new system happens while everything is working fine with the existing forum then everyone can see the messages about the new arrangements.

I understand the idea of changing in the quieter off-season but on the other hand, it may help to make the change while people are logging on regularly and have more chance to see messages about the move.

I'm not a tech whizz but I would think change it now before any big issues arise, that is if you have time.

Like others, I appreciate the time and effort that goes on behind the scenes of the forum (much like at a non-league club), so thank you Steve for all you do.

Steve,

Thanks for all your hard work maintaining this excellent forum.

Id be supportive of moving to the new software sooner rather than later.

Perhaps a graduated move could work? Restructuring perhaps first so that we have continuity of conversation from this season into next, but those which relate heavily to the current season close and move in May?

Just a thought, im not an IT expert so might be impractical.

For me, you have to go with the new software Steve. Nostalgia gets you nowhere in IT, you either keep up or get lost, with all the hidden risks associated - security, privacy and functionality all begin to lapse if you fail to upgrade eventually. I`ve just upgraded our whole school from Windows 7 to Windows 10 to great choruses of resistance from Staff but they`ve coped well with it, and many have commented they like a lot of the new features.

It`s a really good shout from `The Parish`to do it in the close season though!!

I'm not sure you're going to get majority consent, mainly because most users won't express an opinion. All you can hope for is to give everyone the opportunity to comment and take the opinions of as many of the regular users as possible.

As for me, I'm happy for change. Even though I'm using Windows 10 I often get glitches, can't post clickable links, lose text half way through typing etc. So the sooner the better for me. Good luck!

I don't post a great deal, but I do use the site every day for news, opinions etc.
It is clear that new software is needed, therefore I would say sooner rather than later.
I love this forum and would miss it greatly if the historical sections/threads were not archived and made readily accessible.

Re: [rebus] This Forum Software [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

I use the site most days but so far I've rarely found the need to post.
As a former system software engineer (around 30 years ago, working on IBM mid-range systems), I'm well aware of the time it can take to maintain software for even the simple changes and the potential problems that can arise. For major changes, it takes a lot of planning beforehand and testing afterwards, not forgetting the installation time, and almost invariably something will get missed in the post-installation testing, no matter how tightly such testing is planned. There's also the point that it doesn't matter when a change or upgrade is scheduled, there are sure to be users who wiill be inconvenienced.

I'm also aware of how easy it can be to introduce an error or problem into software when trying to fix a different error/problem - I've done so myself, several times.

Once software starts to give the impression of getting 'flaky' and creating problems that are not easily reproducable by the maintenance personnel, it's often the time to replace it.
It's only fair to say that other software engineers may well have had a completely different experience to mine.
It seems to me that the current version appears to be introducing more problems for users, even if I don't see them all myself. For that reason, I'd prefer to have new forum software introduced sooner rather than later.

I'm in favour of change - this is a world in which standing still is a slow death. As long as the new software is user friendly and improves the user experience then go for it (but please don't choose something that will quote a dozen posts in one reply by default!).

Re: [Haywain] This Forum Software [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

This is the only forum I contribute to, although I occasionally browse others, so it's hard to know what I'd make of new software. But like anything I guess it'd just be a case of getting used to it. As long as signing up was easy, and the existing threads continued in a broadly similar form, then I don't see a problem.

I don't know if it'd allow some new features to be introduced. I find trying to post photos difficult, but that might just be me as others manage it. It'd be good if people could 'like' posts (and 'dislike' them I suppose).

I'm happy to go with the majority, but clearly it's got to happen at some point and it's better not to wait until it's too late.

Now there's a can of worms!
In a similar vein though, some forums have the functionality to let you report inappropriate posts to the admins via a single click of a button. Whether that makes posters' or admins' lives easier is probably open to debate but some must find it helpful, and I assume it's far more efficient than sending PMs.

Thanks for all the feedback.
I think it seems generally accepted that we need to change the forum software for the long term good.
I have looked at Community Software where we can host blogs and image galleries and stuff like that but I think what people want is just a good easy to use forum on all platforms that gets regular software updates to keep on top of the tech changes and is really a continuation of this one in the shape of forum titles, with a look as close to this one as possible.
That shouldn't be too tricky. Regarding feature requests, pretty much all current software would come with those features and much much more.

That might be the most ludicrous thing I've ever read on here. Even if it was feasible to enforce it would undoubtedly put people off.

I think it's time to move on, the software is awful to moderate the PSF board.

There are plenty of other options (including the dreaded Facebook) for photo galleries and the like. As you rightly say, a more up to date version of what we have now should be the way forward.

Ditto Andy's post. The more straight forward the forum, the more attractive it is. Too many add on's makes it more cumbersome.

'The more straight forward the forum, the more attractive it is.'

Agreed.

I suspect that many users of this forum are 'of a certain age', and find that adapting to new procedures can sometimes be quite tiresome, and quite daunting. (No offence intended, chaps...)

I am such a person. And as this is something that will not become easier with time, on that basis alone, changes should be implemented as soon as possible.

Steve, I recently set up the Leek Town forum using https://www.tmdhosting.com/

It cost about 85 for 3 years, which includes a domain name, and has loads of free software automatically installed, such as phpBB, Wordpress, etc.

Thanks for the recommendation. I can't really run this site on shared hosting. It gets over a million hits a month, would slow to a crawl and then be throttled by the hosts as it would be affecting other sites on the same server.

I had trouble even on a dedicated server on Saturdays until I got a server upgrade where Editors couldn't log in to update Leagues and forum pages were slow to very slow on a weekend. Now all is good touch wood.

Just to update... I am waiting on a PHP server upgrade from the hosts in the next 48 hours or so then I can install up to date forum software. Probably a week or two to customise and configure. Some testing time to let Admins and Mods in to try and break it and offer suggestions. Mid December would be the aim for new forum if all goes to plan.

Cheers.... Steve
