Under 18s Youth and Academy venues or Reply Privately

A few of us on here attempt to visit Premier Academy/Professional Development League/Youth Alliance fixtures from time to time, but accurate venue information can be hard to find.

Below is the best info I have on where each club currently plays its Under 18s games. Some use more than one home ground during the course of a season, and some apparent groundshares might not use the main pitch at the host club.

Grateful for anyone who can offer any updates/corrections/clarifications.

Re: [Tommy12317] Under 18s Youth and Academy venues or

More relevantly gents, can we get a definitive list going of grounds where we can actually gain admittance? The sad news that my beloved Watford have now gone down the self indungent route of barring spectators at U18 games has led me to think seriously about just staying where I know I will be welcomed, ie Plymouth, Torquay, Exeter, Bristol City, Rovers when I can find out which ground they are at, West Ham...
I would imagine half the venues listed here are out of bounds, even to those of us with valid press passes

Re: [Jaundiced Hack] Under 18s Youth and Academy venues or Reply Privately

Excellent thread idea.

I can confirm that Orient's detials are correct, but they have been using the training ground at Old Chigwellians recently whilst building work is being carried out at Whitbread's. The youth team manager thanked us for coming to a game earlier in the season, so there is no problem in watching O's youth games.

Dagenham is also correct having moved to Old Parkonians in the summer. The Old Parks people were very welcoming when I visited earlier this season.

Liverpool is correct and I had no problem getting in at their academy.

I will update as and when I (try to) visit somewhere.

Re: [Jaundiced Hack] Under 18s Youth and Academy venues or Reply Privately

My own limited experience of youth and academy grounds over the last three years is;
No problem at all at,
Rotherham United
Chesterfield (although they seem to have moved from the ground I saw them at earlier this season)
Wrexham
Wigan Athletic
Birmingham City
Peterborough United
Aston Villa (u18's but not U21's)
Wolverhampton Wanderers

Access denied at Burton Albion, although others seem to have got in with no problem at all.
Derby County. Wouldn't tell me where their U18 game was being played as ' we don't encourage spectators attending'

These are only my experiences for the last three years. I visited many more clubs before this, but felt it best to keep the information reasonably up to date.

Since this lot ~ http://nonleaguematters.co.uk/...i?post=198639#198639 been to the following with no problem...

Grimsby Town, Lincoln City {former venue}, Chesterfield {2x f.v.}, Notts County {f.v.}, Doncaster Rovers, Mansfield Town {2x f.v.}, Scunthorpe United {f.v.}, Millwall, Barnet, Crystal Palace, Leyton Orient, Huddersfield Town {f.v.}, Dagenham & Redbridge {f.v.}, Southampton, AFC Wimbledon, Gillingham,
and this season ~ Hartlepool United, Burton Albion, York City.

...apart from ~ Millwall {steward on gate}, Crystal Palace {gate firmly closed & stewards very reluctant to open it!}, Burton Albion {security barrier/manned gatehouse - it's a MOD site}

No problems getting in at Cheltenham, Cardiff, Crewe, Nottingham Forest, Walsall and Doncaster. However, Derby confirmed to me by email last season that spectators are not welcome.

Cardiff also advised that they usually start (and end?) the season at South Wales Uni due to Leckwith Stadium being unavailable - presumably due to a clash with athletics.

Re: [Mark] Under 18s Youth and Academy venues or Reply Privately

I can't edit my original post, but I've been told that Bury FC now play Youth Alliance games at Old Boltonians FC, Tower Street, Chapeltown, Turton. Old Boltonians are in the Lancashire Amateur League. This looks to be confirmed by their website/Twitter.

As for getting in, club policies seem to change depending when you go, who you speak to, or even who is on the gate when you get there. I've never yet been turned away, but Brighton have told me I won't get, in and I'm not embarking on a four or five hour journey for a morning game in Sussex when I might not get in to see it.

As a rule, I avoid Premier League clubs if they have first team games on Sundays, especially if they're at home, as there's a chance they'll be training at the youth team venue and unexpected visitors won't be welcome.

Of those with a reputation for sometimes being awkward I had no problems at Chelsea (twice), Arsenal or Reading, I got lucky at Derby (I drove in behind another car when the security gates opened and was never challenged), and I did Crystal Palace's ground for a rep match when it was home to Cuaco FC in the Southern Amateur League. Fortunately I went to many of the bigger clubs before they started tightening up.

Of the grounds I still need, with the exception of Brighton, I don't foresee any problems. I need Colchester (have been before still need the "main" pitch), Swansea, Hartlepool, Cambridge Utd, AFC Bournemouth, Newport and Torquay. Added to that list are Barnet (think they've moved to a new pitch at The Hive, some distance from where I saw them before) and Bristol City, who I think play on an "outside" pitch at the SGS College WISE Campus, judging by recent match highlights on their website.

AFC Bournemouth started the season at Canford Park Arena but have played their last two home matches at Canford School where Cherries used to train before moving 'in-house' to the new facility behind the main stadium. Canford School is on the opposite side of Magna Road to the Arena behind Hamworthy Recreation's ground. Highlights are still available on AFCB website of the match v Cheltenham in September and the recent match v Swindon so you can tell they were played at different grounds, to view click on the match reports in the youth team fixture list.

Man City were fine and from experience, it's only Chelsea and Southampton of the current Premier League teams who categorically say no to people coming along. I've had e-mail correspondence with Chelsea in the past week where I've moaned about their UEFA Youth League matches being played behind closed doors, but I just keep getting a message saying that their training ground is private and nothing more. My dispute is that I've been to UEFA Youth League matches at Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Benfica over the past year and if they openly welcome the public, why should Chelsea be any different ? I think that UEFA and the FA should have the balls to tell Chelsea to admit the public.

Of the FA Premier League Academy teams, Brighton and Derby seem to not want the public to attend.

I told the FA a couple of years ago that it should be mandatory that teamsheets are printed too for youth matches, but they just came out with a mass of excuses.

For the European matches, does the Chelsea training ground meet minimum requirements? This insists on a capacity of 200 (yes, I know all roped off pitches with one long side access achieves this). It also demands 50 VIP seats, and 20 press seats. It does not, however insist on letting the public in!
Surely the solution the the idea that the Chelsea Training ground is private would be to play the games elsewhere?

The main pitch at Cobham is fully enclosed and, when I went in March 2012, had a trio of small stands, which between them will have the required number of seats.

I've attached a pic of the ground, which I took before the third place play off in that year's NextGen Series, between Liverpool and Marseille Under 19s. The capacity wasn't tested, my headcount of the attendance was 40. More were watching Chelsea U18s on a pitch next door.

For the record, absolutely no problems getting in on that occasion.

I've never directly asked Charlton if they let spectators in for the under 18s, but the impression given by the website is that they don't. However the 1pm development squad games actively advertise how to get in. If you're not a season ticket holder at Charlton you'll need to sign up for the Red Card, which is the system they use to identify supporters for first team games. It's free and there's no problem getting a card if you're not local. Admission to development squad games at Sparrows Lane is then free. Do check the club website though, as they occasionally play at the Valley or at Welling. Also note gates open only shortly before kick-off.

If you don't want to faff around with the red card, or don't want a 1pm game that you can't double up with something else, the trick is to keep an eye on pre-season friendlies for the women's team. They, or their reserves, play the odd match at Sparrows Lane if their normal venue isn't available.

Strangely enough I saw the same fixture in December 2012. Like Trevor, i didn't encounter any problems at the venue.

I parked in the road opposite the main entrance. It was certainly busy on the day I visited as the neighbouring Fulham Academy had several training sessions for U-12,U-11,U-10'etc with all their parents & friends seemingly in attendance as well.

I played there many years ago, when it was owned by one of the big insurance companies and the changing facilities were better than I'd experienced at some league grounds. Although the café is usually open if you have time (and with the big match in the area at Kingsmeadow v Harrow spitting distance away easily fitting in to give a couple of hours) further along the road going in the direction of the A3, down the unnamed road on the bend, is Woodies bar where there is always a great range of ales on and classic burgers are a speciality. Better than those at Kingsmeadow and around the same price too.
Walls are covered with hundreds of programmes from a variety of sports, mainly South and West London clubs so always a good read too.

Manchester City's Under 18 Premier League game v Blackburn on Saturday will the first fixture at the club's new City Football Academy, but will be behind closed doors.

Should just be a one off though, to quote from the email that came with this week's U18PL and U18PDL2 bulletin ... "Manchester City's match this Saturday against Blackburn Rovers is being played behind closed doors due to this being the first weekend of their new Academy's opening. Future matches will resume with their normal spectator/scout protocol."

No probs and the guy there was cooking up bacon sarnies pre match. It's just outside Newton Abbot at Seale Hayne which I think is on the Ashburton Road. Nice reception when I went.

I might also be heading to Seale Hayne on Saturday. Contacted the club today and confirmed the venue and kick off time, which is 11am.

Then again, it's a long journey for an 11am start, and options for a new ground in the afternoon look limited to parks in Torquay (Upton or Waldon), so I might change my mind.

I also contacted AFC Bournemouth who confirmed, as I expected, that Saturday's game is off as they have a Youth Cup match on Friday night. However, they did confirm that home games are played at Canford School.

See oou both there then although Trev might like to calm his missus down as my Sprocker is currently in Cheshire and will not be ticking off any grounds this weekend! Was doing Exeter Yoof v Argyle but as the pm game is Buckland v Bodmin in the Vase just up the road it makes sense.

I would like to see Cambridge United v Leyton Orient U18 this Saturday and have e-mailed the home side a few days ago but, no shocks here, they have not replied. Having seen that club's callous disregard for the paying public at their friendly at Bury Town pre season I am not unduly surprised.
That being the case, does anyone know where they play?

Cambridge United Youth team play at Clare College Sports Ground, Bentley Road, Trumpington, Cambridge.
Went to watch them v Barnet Youth a few weeks ago, no problems gaining entry and there is even a refreshment tent. At the end of Bentley Road, follow the track down and you will see the college gates ahead. On my visit there was a member of the youth squad directing cars into the car park. From the car park walk down towards the tent and pavilion building.

Total Grounds- 1355 (10).
Grounds this season- 35.
Latest New ground -Wibbandune Ground, Colliers Wood United.
Rugby Union grounds-7.

As previous replies have said, venue should be Clare College ground.

No point emailing them though, I did that ahead of a visit earlier in the season (see WDYG for Sat 6 Sept). Based on the reply went to Clare College, only to find they don't use that ground during the cricket season and were instead at Pembroke College.

Best bet is to phone and speak to someone in the club shop, as they seemed to know what was going on, and were very helpful when I called in a mild panic about 10 minutes ahead of kick off on the Saturday.

Had to undertake some slight negotiations with the stewards at Charlton Athletic last Saturday, despite having my Red Card and County FA pass to hand. However, once inside, a regular informed me that it was more to do with the public car park being full up and I was apparently wrangling myself a spot in the private club car park without realising it!

It does appear that the public car park there does fill up much earlier than it used to (I'm not sure it ever filled up at all up until a couple of years ago) so, if going by car, be prepared to get there early otherwise you will need to park in the school next door or out on Sparrows Lane itself.

Morecambe FC also have a new venue this season. Although they have played at Slyne with Hest FC occasionally, their regular ground is UCLan Sports Arena (formerly Preston Sports Arena), Tom Benson Way, Preston, PR2 1SG.
This is as per the club website and was also confirmed by email.

That's an interesting one. Any idea which pitch they use? I've seen Springfields play on the pitch nearest the entrance, and on the pitch inside the athletics track.

Re Morecambe U18's, I enquired about a recent Thursday morning game but in the end couldn't go. All I can tell you is that Morecambe's email confirmation stated "we're on pitch 1 at the Arena". Hope this helps.
Just to mention as well that an email exchange with Brighton & Hove Albion confirmed that no spectators are admitted to their new venue, which incidentally is at Mash Barn Lane, Lancing. I too made the decision that I wasn't going to make the journey from the midlands for an 11am kick off just to end up filling time with a stroll on the nearest beach!

I expect someone who has been here more recently than I have (September 2010) will respond, but certainly there were no problems at the time of my visit. In fact, I can't even recall any stewards on the gate. Mind you, I do tend to turn up quite early! If you want more details on the ground, my report posted on the WDYG thread can still be accessed. Worth bearing in mind that if you're driving, the entrance is immediately off a very busy dual carriageway and can catch you by surprise!

Still no problem according to a Southend supporter I know. Plenty of parking at the venue. Refreshments served from the Boots & Laces building which is a former night club.

Several pitches also here. Watched the U-18's whilst the U16's were also playing at the same time on an adjacent pitch.

I see from today's "Sunday Independent" that Plymouth Argyle's Under-18's played their home game in the Football League Youth Alliance yesterday (10.1.15) at Plymouth Marjon's 3G pitch. Assume this may have been a one-off because of weather related problems, but worth noting for those of us interested in these venues/fixtures.

Had no problem getting into Wednesday's Middlewood Road this season, although it was for an under-21 game, and the public are kept behind a fence behind one goal (staff/scouts/press etc are allowed down the side of the pitch).

Not had problems at Forest on a Saturday morning either. Dunno when people have been, but the old main pitch, in front of the pavilion, is now half covered by a rigid tent housing an indoor pitch, and small-size kids pitches. There are two 'adult' pitches behind the now-extended pavilion presently used for Academy games - often will have U16s on one and U18s on the other, but I've seen U18s use both.

And Port Vale's training pitch can be viewed from the main club car park, albeit through a fence, so no issues with access.

Manchester City - Platt Lane, Fallowfield (imminent move to City Football Academy, date tbc)

Manchester City are now playing games at the City Football Academy (aka the "minihad"). However, according to Twitter, this Saturday's Premier U18 game v Liverpool is behind closed doors, with no spectators admitted. Seems crazy as spectators were welcome to games at Platt Lane, and now they've got a stadium with 7,000 seats !

Spectators have been allowed into FA Youth Cup games and U21 games there so far.

Fingers crossed I'll be allowed into next month's Premier League International Cup match v Leicester.

I'm not sure what happened to the Guinness Sports Ground but mention of it has made me dig out my old Hanwell & District (Wednesday) Football League handbooks. We (Immigration FC) played there in the 84-5 season when it was being used by the never-to-be-forgotten London Fire Brigade 'G' Division FC. We won 4-0 on a very hot day in early September. Happy days.

Incidentally, there were 3 divisions of 10 teams that season, and the Heathrow Airport League where our reserves played also had 3 divisions. To the best of my knowledge, just 30 years later there are no midweek leagues in West London.

Attended the Chesterfield U18 2 Rotherham United U18 1 match today. As detailed on the list at the start of this thread, Chesterfield now play at:
College Fields, 163 Langer Lane, Wingerworth, S40 2JW.
No problem at all with gaining admission and in fact the club were happy to confirm the slightly earlier kick off time of 10.30am in the week preceding the match. It looks like Chesterfield are here for a while as the site now has a freshly laid car park.
There are three pitches side by side, with the venue also used by Chesterfield Town of the Midlands Regional Alliance Div.2 so a nice easy opportunity of two games in a day with no extra travelling at all. Maybe I should have stayed put, but I ventured off to pastures new and 'enjoyed' my fourth 0-0 in eight games!

Haven't attempted it since that day with the ticket fiasco. I have heard that Brian Buck went shortly afterwards and got in okay, but that was a midweek game, not a Saturday. No idea what the Saturday situation is at the moment as I haven't tried. Watford, sadly, dropped a number of places down my future pecking order that day!

Bury have taken a lease on Manchester City's former training base at Carrington, with effect from Sunday, so I'd assume they'll begin playing youth games there.

As far as I'm aware City never played any youth team games at Carrington, at least none that were open to spectators. A word of warning to any avoid accidental revisits, before City took it over it was the UMIST sports ground, and I saw Old Mancunians play there in 1999.

It appears that Bury are indeed playing their Under 18 games at Carrington.
I attended Carlisle United v Portsmouth in League Two on Good Friday and the Youth Alliance feature in their programme referred to their away game at Bury on March 14th as follows: "Bury were top when we went there and it was their first game at Carrington so we knew it would be a difficult game".

Re: [AV1960] Under 18s Youth and Academy venues or Reply Privately

Visited the Manchester City Football Academy for this morning's Under 18's match v. Everton.
Assuming it would be played at the main Academy Stadium, I hadn't bothered about checking admission for spectators. On arrival, however, I found that the Under 21's match v. Southampton had been moved from Sunday to this afternoon at the Academy Stadium. The Under 18's match was therefore played on the senior youth pitch which was immediately adjacent to the Stadium. Not only that but MCFC had decided to apply a policy of no admission for casual spectators. This was for a game which would decide the championship of the Under 18 League and was also advertised on the MCFC website with no mention of restricted admission!
After jumping through a few hoops with the stewards I finally gained admission and was impressed to find that the pitch boasted a stand of around 100 seats on the half way line with room for standing spectators at the back. Refreshments were also available from the Parent's Room in the Performance Centre. With the security in place I was then rather surprised to find team sheets brought round for the spectators.
On the pitch Man City won 1-0, thereby depriving Everton of the championship and handing it to Middlesbrough. No doubt their coaches would have been very pleased with how City sat on their first half goal and killed the game but personally I like to see more creativity at youth games.
There was an obvious opportunity to remain at the Academy for the afternoon game but I decided to stick with plan 'A' and headed off to some cricket. The Academy Stadium can be ticked off some other time, possibly if next Saturday is too wet for cricket when I believe the Under 21's are playing their friends from Newton Heath.

Re: [AV1960] Under 18s Youth and Academy venues or

That, in a nutshell is one of the main reasons I took the decision just after Christmas to sever all connections with football at all levels after almost 50 years and over 6,000 games. When a casual spectator cannot now be reasonably assured of being allowed to watch a game, even if it has passed the ludicrously stringent H and S laws referees now adhere to, it loses any draw in what is an increasingly manic world where free time and finances are at a premium. There are a whole list of other reasons why I have made the decision and I am in the process of writing a piece about it. From almost pedantic reasons such as websites which cannot update changed kick-off times and list scores back to front to far more important aspects such as managers and players ritually abusing officials such as that disgusting foul rant by Chesterfield's manager the other day to a linesman who was sadly too gutless to get him sent to the stand.
It is not only football as many other sports which were important to me no longer hold any appeal at a larger level. As my job still involves local sport then I still have a contact which is not broken but football has been and it will need a completely radical overhaul for me to get the excitement back. However, I am well aware that most of those still on here enjoy the buzz and wish them well. I shall be bowing out from this website but if I can help anyone with any info I shall be bappy to do so. Find me on Facebook. Regards Kerry Miller

Norwich are usually ok, but it might be worth contacting the club in advance just to make sure. If it coincides with first team training they might be wary of visitors.

A former poster has Tweeted Oxford United are now going to play all youth matches at Abingdon United Instead of their training. I was also informed by a friend there is now a second pitch at the ground at right angles to main pitch on the former Cricket pitch

I presume you mean 17th August, I plan to go to this game and have never had a problem at Colney TC, they have always issued a teamsheet or basic programme for all of my visits too.

Cropped from match report.

No problems getting in but rather restricted as to where you can watch from, which are two separate areas on one side of the pitch leaving the central area only accessible by players, staff and officials. However I did witness the scouts present told they needed to stand in a small area by the corner flag which didn't go down too well. My most recent visits (two years ago) were to witness games on pitches two and three which allowed much more freedom where to watch from.

In addition a free teamsheet was issued.

AFC Bournemouth U18 (0)1 Portsmouth U18 (0)2
Football League Youth Alliance
Saturday 5/9/15 at Canford Park Arena
Attendance: 77 (h/c)

Canford Park Arena was covered on this site back in September, 2014 but AFC Bournemouth then moved to Canford School due to drainage problems. This post is just to confirm that they are indeed now back at Canford Park Arena.
One improvement to last year is that, in addition to hot and cold drinks, bacon baps and sausage baps are also now available. Very welcome after travelling 176 miles to arrive in time for an 11pm kick off!
On the pitch Portsmouth maintained their position at the top of the South West Conference by coming from behind for a 2-1 win which they just about deserved.

The weird thing is that my 11pm kick off at Bournemouth was followed by a 3pm kick off at Wareham.

Re: [AV1960] Under 18s Youth and Academy venues or Reply Privately

Hull City U18 (1) 3 Coventry City U18 (1) 2
Under 18 Professional Development League 2
Saturday 14/11/15 at Bishop Burton College
The thought of enjoying 90 minutes football without a drop of rain was too tempting, so watching this match before the rain arrived made a good double with the 2pm kick off at the new Hall Road Rangers ground (where it definitely didn't stay dry). Although dry, it was also gloomy and the whole match apart from the first ten minutes were played with the floodlights on.
Previous visitors to Bishop Burton College for Westella games will be well aware of the layout with a line of four pitches to the right of the sports hall: a 4G cage, a floodlit football pitch, a second smaller football pitch and finally a rugby pitch. It was the floodlit football pitch which was used for this match and I was advised by a member of the Academy staff that this is the normal Under 18's pitch. This pitch was previously vulnerable to waterlogging when Westella played on it, but it is greatly improved now following work by Hull City. There was also an Under 16's game played which took place on one of the three pitches which are immediately on the left after passing through the security gate at the College entrance.
A thoroughly entertaining game saw Coventry take an early lead before Hull took control with three goals. A second Coventry goal three minutes from time was too little too late.
It was then a quick nine mile drive to Haworth Park and the goals kept coming with Hall Road Rangers beating South Cave 4-2 in the East Riding Senior Cup. Potential visitors to Haworth Park might care to note that their new floodlights were used for the second half, although the club have no midweek home games scheduled until near the end of the season.

Re: [tigerman48] Under 18s Youth and Academy venues or Reply Privately

Crystal Palace U18 (0) 2 Queens Park Rangers U18 (0) 0
Under 18 Professional Development League 2 South
Saturday 28/11/15 at Goals Beckenham North.
Attendance: 45 (h/c), no team sheets

When enquiring about attending a match at Palace's new Under 18's venue, I was told only season ticket holders were allowed in with no admission to the general public. After an exchange of emails with a helpful member of Palace's Academy staff, however, my name was added to 'the list' for the QPR match.
Goals Beckenham North is a large complex with 5 a side pitches, a gym and a large playing area with room for four football pitches and a rugby pitch. As such the site was extremely busy with the car park full and many parking on the road outside, although this does cost £2.20.
The main playing area appears to have formerly been a cricket ground and spectators congregate before the game around the pavilion. This pavilion looks out at the two Palace pitches from behind the goal but, as it is slightly elevated, it is quite possible to watch both Under 18's and Under 16's at the same time from here. It also has a decent sized overhang for shelter on wet days and the bar was open selling hot and cold drinks. Security staff then allow spectators down to pitchside about ten minutes before the kick off, so you can also watch from the traditional spot on the touchline.
I did have a chat with a member of the security staff who checked his list, but I didn't see any spectators being asked to show season tickets. The main car park is right by the Palace pitches so, with so many members of the public on the site for other reasons, it is difficult to see how Palace can possibly enforce a 'no admission' policy.
The conditions were very challenging with a strong blustery wind and Palace deservedly won the Under 18's game with two second half goals while I believe the Under 16's finished at 1-1.
It was then off into the delights of London's traffic and a full half hour to cover the 2.9 miles to Lewisham Borough (Community) 1 Forest Hill Park 1 at the Ladywell Arena.

They began the season at Lytham YMCA due to building work at the training ground, but were due to return there during November. Seems they've opted instead for an alternative venue.

No suitable changing rooms at the training ground I was told Last Tuesday they changed at AFC and come to training ground in mini buses. The AFC sec said they were now at AFC's ground for the foreseeable future

As an aside for training the players seem to change at Broomfield Road and go to the training ground in their cars I have stayed in the hotel across the road from the ground twice this year and have seen them troop across the road from the ground to the hotel car park and then drive off to the training ground

Hartlepool United U18 (1) 3 York City U18 (0) 2
Football League Youth Alliance
at Blackhall Colliery Welfare Park
Saturday 20th February, 2016

My intention had been to 'double' a visit to Blackhall with a champagne job at Heaton Stannington in the Northern League. Finally, after what seemed like months of waiting, the two requirements of an 11am kick off at Blackhall and a decent weather forecast for the north east came together.
Many of the Saturday morning youth games are played at bleak wind swept training grounds, so it was a real pleasure to see a game at a 'proper' ground with a heritage of Wearside League and more recently Durham Alliance football.
The pit is long gone in Blackhall but the Colliery Welfare Park is typical of many such examples with the complex catering for many sports including an impressive cricket ground complete with new pavilion. The football ground is railed off on three sides with a bank of wide terracing steps on the far side from the entrance providing an ideal vantage point. The near side is roped off from spectators and boasts what appears to be two newly built dug outs, presumably indicating that Hartlepool have intentions of remaining on the site. There is no cover but hard standing runs around the pitch, although in need of some tlc in places.
On the pitch Hartlepool eased off at 3-0 up after 60 minutes and nearly paid the price. They managed to hang on to a 3-2 win, thus depriving York of the chance to add to their season's total of just three points.
When researching the history of the ground I came across Blackhall's claim to fame. Apparently Blackhall beach was the setting for the closing stages of "Get Carter" starring Michael Caine. With no time for sightseeing however, it was straight off in the direction of the Tyne Tunnel and on to the Grounsell Park home of Heaton Stannington FC. Lovely, friendly people but sadly my champagne job was celebrated with a 0-0 draw that was predictable from about ten minutes onwards.

Re: [AV1960] Under 18s Youth and Academy venues or Reply Privately

As I reported in the WDYG thread for March 12th., 2016, I visited Forest Green Rovers Youth recently. The club's Academy fixtures are played at the Royal Agricultural University on the outskirts of Cirencester and there were no problems as far as access to the match was concerned. The public car-park is inside the Stroud Road entrance and you then walk round the University buildings to the pitches on the Tetbury Road side of the complex. The one used when I was there was on the right hand side of the driveway - looking from the top - which cuts through the playing fields from the Tetbury Road entrance. It was the second soccer pitch down below a rugby pitch with a younger age group game also taking place on the third pitch down. It appeared as if the higher pitch might be used in preference, as that one was roped along both sides and the Bridgwater players were strolling around it when I arrived. Corner flags were lying on their side behind one end while on the other two pitches prepared on this side of the driveway, the flags were in place. The middle of the three was the one chosen anyway and this was roped along one side. There are additional pitches beyond the other side of the driveway and an even younger age group game was amongst activities taking place there.

Although the club prefers drivers to use the car-park off Stroud Road (which is where SatNav took me), my mobility problems enabled me to park close to the dressing-rooms and I therefore drove round to the Tetbury Road entrance. Both entrances are clearly marked off the two roads concerned. A few spectators headed for the main buildings at half time and came back with hot drinks. There may be a cafe or other refreshments room there or possibly there are vending machines. Various alternative activities were taking place on site, including a meeting of the local bell-ringing association - fortunately minus any sounds of practice sessions!

It's a delightful setting with plenty of trees around the extensive grounds. The overlooking University buildings, complete with integrated clock tower, further add to the general "public school" ambience. As is often the case in such venues, there are no real spectator comforts by way of seating or cover, apart from the trees which form an attractive avenue along the driveway. Choose a fine weather day if heading here!

Blackpool U18 (0)2 Bradford City U18 (1) 1
EFL Youth Alliance Cup - Northern Group 5
Saturday 27th August, 2016
Blackpool Under 18's have found themselves a new venue for this season at Myerscough College Sports Centre, St.Michael's Road, Bilsborrow, Lancashire, PR3 0RY.
The village of Bilsborrow is on the A6, four miles north of Junction 1 on the M55. As you enter the village from the south, the college is clearly signposted to the left down St.Michael's Road. The main entrance to the college is then 3/4 mile along on the right, on a sharp left hand bend. If you follow the signs to 'Visitor Parking', the sports pitches are then a short walk away through the college. There is an unsigned smaller entrance before the main entrance which takes you straight to the pitches. There is a 3g pitch on the site but Blackpool use one of three grass pitches. In fact I was told that the EFL are not keen on Under 18's playing on 3G, so Blackpool have no plans to use that pitch. There was no problem at all with admission. In fact, the Academy Administrator very kindly confirmed all the match details for me by email.
The game itself was thoroughly entertaining. Bradford City just about deserved their half time lead but a dominant second half from Blackpool saw them score twice and hit the woodwork twice for a deserved win. The dressing rooms are a considerable distance from the pitch so potential visitors may be interested to note that half time was a short break on the pitch.
Tackling the M6 on a Bank Holiday weekend is always a questionable tactic but fortunately the motorway behaved itself on my way to the match and again afterwards when heading south. By 1.30pm I was parked up at Mossie Park ready for the afternoon's entertainment of Charnock Richard 1 St.Helen's Town 3.

Re: [AV1960] Under 18s Youth and Academy venues or Reply Privately

Preston North End U18's (0)1 Port Vale U18's (2)2
EFL Youth Alliance North West
Saturday 17th September, 2016
For this season Preston North End are playing their Youth Alliance fixtures at the UcLan Sports Arena, Tom Benson Way, Preston, PR2 1SG. Given it's location, the simplest way to approach is from Junction 1 of the M55. Taking the A6 towards Preston you immediately turn right on the B6241 and follow the signs.
I was aware that pitch 1 of the large UcLan Sports Arena has been used for Morecambe's Youth Alliance fixtures before but on this occasion the game was played on pitch 3 which is towards the western side of the complex. As you enter, follow the service road past numerous grass and 3G pitches and the complex café until you reach car park no.4. You then follow the footpath under the bridge and around to the right past the Western Dressing Rooms to reach pitch 3. There is a pavilion by the touch line to the left of which the pitch is roped off for spectators.
There was no problem at all with spectators being admitted. Indeed, as with my recent visit to Blackpool, I found that Preston were very helpful and confirmed all of the match details by email. The complex was extremely busy with numerous hockey and football matches taking place plus a number of cyclists also traversing the site. This means that all of the car parks were either very busy or full with the Under 18 spectators mostly parking on the grass verge of the service road.
The game resulted in a slightly undeserved win for Port Vale. Preston did their best to pull back a 0-2 half time deficit but couldn't quite manage it during an engrossing match.
My afternoon game was at Prestwich Heys so my journey was predominantly M61 rather than M6. Judging by the visiting Alsager Town players still arriving at 2.15pm, the M6 was once more best avoided!

Went to watch Cardiff City u-23 v Birmingham City u-23 yesterday afternoon at the Vale of Glamorgan Hotel in Hensol. Parking right by the pitch and no problems wandering over to watch the game. Stewards giving out teamsheets on arrival.

The game ended in a resounding 4-0 win for the visitors and there were a few first teamers on display (Kennedy for Cardiff and Paul Caddis for Brum).

Mark Cooper (FGR manger) was in attendance no doubt looking for potential loan signings.

They're at home to Wigan according to the fixture list http://www.efl.com/....2017549-3672008.pdf

Best to contact the club to check the venue but a lot of U18 games are played at the main stadium. I'd expect it to be there as the first team play Friday this week, so the ground will be free on Saturday.

Seems to be mixed reports if there is a game and where it is played. Anyone know anything? Also could I get to Everton for a 3 pm kick off driving after an 11 am Accrington U18s kick off?
Cheers

They're at home to Wigan according to the fixture list http://www.efl.com/....2017549-3672008.pdf

Best to contact the club to check the venue but a lot of U18 games are played at the main stadium. I'd expect it to be there as the first team play Friday this week, so the ground will be free on Saturday.

Whilst obviously far too late to be of any use to you now, I thought I would post to say I went to watch Accrington Stanley U18s today v Walsall U18s, and the match was played at Nelson FC.

Seems the club use Nelson whenever they can, and several games have been played there this season. Of course, you can't get any of this information from the club themselves, but their academy does have an excellent twitter account, which has details/venues/kick off times for all their various age group matches.

Tranmere v Carlisle is now 5/5 and being played at Solar Campus.
This was due to played on 28/4.
Never enquired about time but original game due for 1pm.
I think Solar Campus is not far from Ashville (West Cheshire).
Check with TR later in the week to confirm.

That's correct. It's on Leasowe Road, less than a mile west of Ashville. The club has developed it as its new training centre.

Tranmere Rovers website confirms all home Academy U18 fixtures for the 2017/18 season will be played at Solar Campus.

Details to assist those thinking of going :-

Solar Campus
235 Leasowe Road,
Wallasey
CH45 8RE

By Car - Junction 1 M53. Head North on A554, take the first exit, turn left on to Leasowe Road (A551) and 1st Left into the Campus. Journey from M53 probably 2 minutes or less.

By Train - 10 minute walk from Wallasey Village station. Turn right when leaving the station and walk along A551. Ground on left.

Swindon Town and Forest Green Rovers FCs.

I am now going to be at Malmesbury Vics on Saturday for the Western League but see that both FGR and Swindon are at home in the Football League Youth Alliance.
Not holding my breath for an answer from either so can anyone confirm definitely where they both play youth games now?
There was rumours that FGR were playing at a park in Chippenham, denied by a member of staff who I know. FGR website still has them playing ion the SWCL which is not a good sign to be honest and Swindon doesn't mention fixtures.

Altrincham Youth are expected to move (apart from FA Youth Cup games which will be played at the main stadium) from the former Linotype ground at Clay Lane to the Manchester Health Academy on Moor Lane, Wythenshawe (M23 9BP) but this won't be until October or so.
In the mean time, the first home fixture is being played at Unicorn Athletic in Flixton, but I wouldn't attend any game without checking.

Predictably, no reply from Forest Green or Swindon meaning three e-mails to League clubs have been ignored so far, with Argyle.
Thanks to this forum I chose Swindon Town v Newport County which was indeed at Stanley Park, Chippenham.
This is a stunning facility spread over many manicured acreas a few miles out of Chippenham on the Calne Road.
Struggled for coffee and grub there but the football made up for it as Swindon have what looks like a fine side.

When I went to Stanley Park the pitch next to the 3G had a large dug out on it and I was told that was the one used in the Wiltshire League by FC Chippenham Youth at that time in dry weather and was in theory the main pitch. When it was wet they transferred over to the 3G which had uncovered railed spectator accommodation down the near side. They have since left the Wiltshire League.

More info. regarding Stanley Park on the WDYG thread for September 9th. following my visit there to see Swindon Town U-18's. Certainly no access problems, but with about 12 pitches (grass/3G) available it's as well to check carefully in the dressing-room building on which pitch your chosen game is being played.

I was there in 2009 and it was a little tricky getting in with stewards on the gate asking difficult questions. Told them I'd come from Cardiff to see that club's U-18's and I was admitted. Hopefully, someone who's been there much more recently will update this post!

I attended a weekday afternoon match there last season. In the morning I rang the contact on my old directory but there was no answer. No stewards around when I arrived but 15 minutes into the game a guy wuth a clipboard came round checking the names of the spectators. I explained I had phoned the club that morning naming the person who was in the directory but failed to mention they hadn't answered the phone. He added my name to the list and walked away.
Can't confirm if you will be allowed in but might be worth a try.

I've not seen anyone update the access status for Southampton's u-23 matches at Staplewood so here goes.

From what I can see, don't think it's accessible to "general folk". I'm working for Opta and have to be accredited ahead of the game then get given a huge badge with MEDIA as I go in. I haven't seen any MOPS there on the occasions I've been there, so I'm 99% sure it's OOB.

Nice little main pitch there next to the giant inflatable dome but by goodness, does it get cold on matchnights?

Today I attended the EFL Youth Alliance game which finished Mansfield Town U18 3 Burton Albion U18 0. The game was played at Brooksby Melton College, Hoby Road, Brooksby, Nr.Melton Mowbray, LE14 2LJ.
Unfortunately I don't know if this was a one off venue or a permanent arrangement as none of the Mansfield people I spoke to knew and my Handbook hasn't been forthcoming from EFL HQ yet.
The ground was used regularly last season by Mansfield's U19 side in the National League Under 19 Alliance so that may offer further opportunities for a visit during 2018-19.
The college is just off the A607 but you should ignore all entrances to the college until you are nearly at a level crossing. Turn in here and you will drive past the 3G cage where the games are staged. Simply follow the driveway past the 3G and park around the corner on some rough ground opposite a grass football pitch. From here there is a short footpath that takes you through some trees and back to the pitch.
With so many clubs displaying paranoid tendencies about Under 18 information, it was a delight to find a full match preview on Mansfield Town's website. This included full details of the venue and an invitation for supporters to attend.

I would imagine this is the season’s home venue as it was last season. The club has a very close tie up with Brooksby college.

Today attended the EFL South East match at Ely Way Leagrave which Luton Town won 2 0 v Barnet. There was no problem getting in there, about 10 min walk from Leagrave station

Re: [Dave 56] Under 18s Youth and Academy venues or Reply Privately

Yesterday's Rovers match programme stated that The Campus Training ground (part of the club's Solar Campus training complex) will again host all the U18's home fixtures this season, KO 11am unless otherwise stated. The fixture list currently shows all home games are on Saturdays.

The prog reconfirmed the address per Dave's post above. It also stated that admission is free for all supporters and refreshment facilities are available on the day, on the first floor of the Campus complex.

Re: [northstandexile] Under 18s Youth and Academy venues or Reply Privately

Time for another update. Below is a full list of youth team venues for three professional tiers, to the best of my knowledge.

Where I've listed alternative venues they're grounds that I know have been used for under 18 games in the last year or so, and/or they are venues listed as alternatives in the new season EFL Youth Alliance handbook.

Where non-League grounds are listed I assume the main pitch is used.

As always there's bound to be some out of date info, esp in the Youth Alliance, so any updates/amends/clarifications would be useful.

Think I'm down to my final six (or seven, or maybe even eight) left to visit.

It's a bit pointless trying to do a match at all the venues as many are out of bounds to mere punters. Some clubs will just lie rather than give out match info. I have a valid News Society press pass but that won't get me into the likes of Reading, Chelsea, Arsenal, Watford, Palace, Brighton, Soton etc. Just sick to the ones where you are welcome. Last time I tried there was still a warm welcome on the gate at West Ham games...

I was fortunate enough to visit all of the above when my lad was in the Academy system.Found them all a bit devoid of atmosphere but was impressed by Chelsea set up. My favourite was Ipswich.

No problems gaining access to Barnet U-18's in fact attendance is actively encouraged. Matches are played on the 'Showcase Pitch' one of the many outside pitches at the Hive which also has a 217 seat stand that used to be at Underhill in the away end.

Mansfield Town u-18's played their first game at the 'brand-new' home of Woburn Road Pleasley NG19 7RT on Saturday 13th October.
A new 4G pitch with a 75 seater stand. However only spectator access down one side, so those folk who only count it as a tick if you touch all four corner flags will be disappointed. Wink

No problems when I went last season, plenty of club officials about who can tell you where to go as it’s a bit of a maze. If you’re coming by car you might need to email ahead as there was a bloke on the gate last time. Easy enough by public transport though.

For me it would depend how far away it was; if it's not too far away I'd suggest going along and finding out for yourself. You never know, you might meet someone there that can get you in and be prepared to help again in the future. If you don't go along you'll never know!

I’d say try it, but decide first if it’s worth the risk and have a plan B just in case (North East Christian Fellowship League games at 10.30am if you’re desparate). There were no problems at all when I went to Sunderland, but that as a few years ago.

I had no issues whatsoever when I attended last season for the match against Newcastle. I was stopped at the barrier but only because the car park was full. I was directed to an overflow car park and walked in from there. Unless they have tightend up this season, should be no problem.

I got in no bother at all. There is actually access to the pitches via a public foot path so you don’t need to go through the academy. Good game though Everton were much better than the mackems. I enjoyed the fact you could go up on a bank to watch.

It can get quite busy there Tim and whilst the complex is quite large, it fills up quickly especially when the junior pitches are all occupied. I would suggest getting there at least 40-50 minutes before the senior teams kick off to park down near the club house.
Plus point is that each STFC game I've watched there this year, the U-16's also play on the adjacent pitch, so you have a choice.

Thanks to all for the help. Won't be rushing there as I've already done the Premier pitch and wondered if Swindon Youth used the 3G, which would have been handy for a wet day...

I've only seen them once on the 3G and that was against Pompey on a midweek fixture that had been previously postponed from a Saturday.

Attended Mansfield v Peterborough today in the central league cup. (Report on WDYG)> Match played at the new Mansfield town FC academy, details as follows :-

The RH Academy,
Woburn Lane,
NG19 7RT

Towards the end of Woburn Lane on the right, which is a cul de sac. Car parking available inside the ground and apparently hot drinks available at half time. No stewards in sight. The 4G has a small seated stand and you can watch from inside the cage along part of one side. I was slightly surprised that the standing area didn't extend the whole length of the side but presumably they don't expect many spectators.

The club website had a match preview with details of the RH and stating spectators welcome. Nice to see that for a change. The RH is named after chairman John Radford and director Steve Hymas whose funds helped make the project viable.

Just a warning to those looking to visit the WISE campus where Bristol City U18 and women play.
They have now installed a big brother parking system which films you going in and out and parking has gone from free to not cheap.
Despite parking in a disabled bay and displaying my blue badge and reporting to the club officiial to register my car I still received a £100 fine, which I have no intentinn of paying.
Beware...or better still go somewhere else

Peterborough Utd, Mick George academy
Was hoping to go to see their U23 game today ( 18 Dec 2018 v Doncaster) hard to find anything about it but in the end phoned the club, who were not sure but helpful and in the end got the message - no public allowed 'Behind closed doors' game.

Don't think Millwall are keen on spectators at the training ground these days. From memory it might be possible to watch from the road, depending which pitch they use.

Are members of the public allowed to watch at Chelsea? I've seen differing reports, with some saying no problems whilst others saying there are difficulties.

I went to watch the WBA v Manchester City U18s match today, and was refused entry as ‘my name wasn’t on the list’

Luckily I was still able to watch the game by going next door to the Aston University Sports Ground and watching from a very high vantage point next to the cricket square.

It is still really frustrating when that happens though, isn’t it? I felt really sorry for all the Mums and Dads from Manchester who weren’t allowed in either.

I went earlier in the season to WBA training ground and had no issues getting in. They did say they couldn't see my name on the list and I could see if they'd let me in. I walked towards the pitches and was asked if I wanted a teamsheet and was directed where to go!

One of the few youth games in England I've seen was in August 1996 at Coventry City's Sky Blue Lodge. Does anyone know the grounds address ?

Apparently Alan Higgs Centre wasn't opened until 2004. I cannot work out if the venue at Leamington Road, Ryton-on-Dunsmore might be the place.

Thanks in advance.

It was indeed. The full address is (per the 2000-01 F.A.Premier Academy League handbook):
Sky Blue Lodge, Leamington Road, Ryton-on-Dunsmore, Coventry, CV8 3EL

Anyone planning to go to Huddersfield Town youth and academy, please be aware there's new limitations on public access to the Canalside site and for the moment, only open to the general public on first team matchdays, I believe.

There's also a new show pitch at the back with floodlights, not sure if they intend to use that one instead.

Queens Park Rangers U18 (1) 2 Bolton Wanderers U18 (1) 4
Saturday 14th September, 2019 (10.30 K.O.)
At ICL Heston Sports Ground, Crane Lodge Road, Hounslow, TW5 9PQ
Under 18 Professional Development League

QPR's regular venue for home games is the Imperial College London Sports Ground, part of which seems to have been taken over by QPR for the use of their Academy. This is only a couple of minutes drive from junction 3 of the M4 and the venue boasts a large car park. The current main concern with Under 18 games is access to the grounds but there are no restrictions at all here. Indeed I was pleasantly surprised to find a steward handing out team sheets to spectators during the first half.
Heston Sports Ground is a large site with the ICL website boasting the provision of five full size and two small size football pitches, two rugby pitches, two cricket fields plus provision for tennis and netball.
The 10.30am kick off was slightly earlier than normal in this league and I was getting slightly stressed by Bolton's non arrival (given their recent history) until they pulled into the car park at 9.45am. Other coaches and minibuses followed and by 11am the whole site was bustling with activity.
Bolton's record in this league was Played 4 Lost 4 but an examination of their squad revealed that six of them were on the first team bench at Gillingham on 31/8/19 so the Under 18 side will have been commensurately weakened. Despite QPR's undeserved equaliser on the stroke of half time, Bolton retained control in the second half and played some impressive football in scoring three further goals. QPR's second with the final kick of the match would barely qualify as a 'consolation'.
From Heston it was back to the persistent challenge of the M25 but eventually I arrived in Dorking in good time for my second game of Dorking Wanderers 3 Maidstone United 1 at the new Meadowbank.

Re: [AV1960] Under 18s Youth and Academy venues or Reply Privately

Lincoln City U18 (3) 5 Huddersfield Town U18 (0) 0
Saturday 28th September, 2019
At Riseholme College Showground Campus, Horncastle Lane, Scampton, LN1 2ZR
EFL Youth Alliance North East

This season's Handbook gives Lincoln City U18's address as the Elite Performance Centre on Heath Lane, Scampton. However, one of the Academy staff was happy to confirm by email that they are in fact playing at their alternative venue of Riseholme College, which is part of the Bishop Burton College.
Any gratitude I felt for this assistance soon dissipated when I realised that the pitch being used was of the 4G variety inside a cage, with no access permitted to spectators. Although there are no permanent spectator facilities, there did seem to be room for Lincoln to have erected a temporary rope and posts arrangement. Sadly they didn't take this option so the 30 or so spectators were forced to peer at the action from outside.
As you enter the Campus, simply bear around to the right and this takes you straight to the pitch which has a car park immediately adjacent. In fact most of those arriving by car totally ignored the marked out parking bays and just positioned themselves pointing straight at the pitch. Drinks seemed to be available from the main Reception building with the College being fairly busy as it was their Open Day for prospective students.
The game itself was effectively decided in the first quarter of an hour, with Lincoln 3-0 up by this point. Although Huddersfield came back into the game more, two further second half goals gave Lincoln a decisive 5-0 win. By the time of the last goal we were 'enjoying' such apocalyptic rain that, added to peering through the cage, it was a struggle to see if the ball had entered the net, much less who had scored.
Afterwards it was a case of dodging the puddles along the A46 en-route to see Cleethorpes hard earned 1-0 victory over Frickley in the F.A.Trophy.

Poolfoot farm - Fleetwood Town
5 October 2019

Went on Saturday to see an Army Cup Final, spectators very welcome - car park gets full but plenty of off street parking close by. Large changing room block which included a bar café plus a hut outside also selling burgers.

As you enter a large pitch on left, used by Fleetwood 1st team. A women's game was on one of the artificial pitches ( this was followed by what looked a veterans game)whilst the Army game took place on the other artificial pitch. Hard standing inside both cages for spectators ( one side only) but no dug outs or any other furniture.

Picnic tables on high grass bank gave you a good view of the game I watched from outside the cage.

As I arrived for a 1230pm kick off, Fleetwood Under 18s were just finishing their game v Carlisle, which was played on one of the outer grass pitches, with a rope up on one side to keep spectators off pitch and on opposite side some seating for the subs of both teams.

Re: [Dribble!] Under 18s Youth and Academy venues or Reply Privately

Portsmouth U18 (5) 6 Newport County U18 (2) 3
Saturday 5th October, 2019
At Roko Health Club, Copnor Road, Portsmouth, PO3 5EW
EFL Youth Alliance

During last season my attempt to visit this venue proved to be a failure when the Under 18's game was switched to Portsmouth University. This time, despite no response from Portsmouth to my email seeking confirmation of the fixture, I took the plunge with a dawn departure and was rewarded with a goal fest. The 11am kick off as per the website proved to be 11.30am and proceedings finally started at 11.37am for no apparent reason, with both teams ready but no match officials to be seen.
As you enter the Roko complex, Portsmouth's training pitches are on the right separated from the car park by tall netting. However, the Under 18s play on another pitch in the far corner of the site which is reached by a footpath between some small size football pitches and some tennis courts. There is a Portsmouth FC sign forbidding access but in fact there was no problem with spectators being admitted. Unfortunately there is very little space along the sides of the pitch so spectators are restricted to watching from behind one goal and even this was only in two small areas which were coned off. It is normal procedure for sides to film games in the EFL Youth Alliance but the lack of space made this difficult. Newport set up a camera behind the goal they were defending but Portsmouth went for the much more modern approach of using a drone. This meant the entire game was played out with a buzzing sound from overhead. Not at all irritating!
Any intending visitors to Copnor Road should note that the pitch is not the best, with many divots in evidence by the end of the game. This didn't prevent both sides looking like they would score with every attack. Portsmouth's 5-2 half time lead was largely thanks to a six minute hat trick from Alfie Stanley and after a quieter second half the final tally was 6-3, although Portsmouth had also hit the woodwork on five occasions.
Despite the later than expected kick off, I was able to reach Hythe & Dibden FC by 2.25pm for their top of the table clash with Downton. Hythe were slightly fortunate to win a very entertaining game by 4-2 with the aid of two own goals.

I assume that the complex is the one listed as Civil Service for my Hampshire League visit in 1994

Some ten or more years earlier, I turned up to a Sunday League game there and realised I did not have a coin with me - so I asked the home club for my travelling expenses at the Portsmouth Sunday League rate of 8p/mile. The result was I had a 2p coin and could get the match started.

Sparrows Lane is generally okay if you are a red card holder but I understand it can be difficult for the ordinary punter to get in. I’ve certainly seen hoppers trying to watch from a distance through the hedges in the past. They are also a club that seem to go through spells of issuing teamsheets for their U18 games but then not bothering for long periods of time.
