Re: [Steelback] where were your first half a dozen grounds? or Reply Privately

1. Leas Station, Hillingdon Borough. Club defunct and Ground no longer exists.
2. Brooklands, Romford. Club defunct and Ground no longer exists
3. Watling Street - Dartford. Club moved.
4. Broadhall Way - Stevenage Athletic. Club defunct. Ground now used by Stevenage FC
5. Pilot Field - Hastings United. Club Defunct, but ground now used by another club that has assumed the name!
6. Stonebridge Road - Gravesend & Northfleet. Club changed name.

For that matter, grounds 7-13 inclusive also have not survived (and only two of the clubs survive), while ground 14 is now used by the club that used to own ground 13, (the original club at ground 14 being defunct).

So ground 15. Imber Court, Met Police - pretty much unchanged (in 40 years). Except of course you don't see many policemen there nowadays

Don't have the dates to hand but I think this is the correct running order:

73/4 Liverpool v Doncaster (2-2!!)
75/6 South Liverpool v Bangor City
78/9 Everton v Bristol City (tickets given out free in school...)
80/1 Marine v Matlock
80/1 Southport v South Liverpool
81/2 Runcorn v South Liverpool (the Valentines Day Massacre as South became the first team that season to beat the all-conquering Runcorn side of the time. 3-2 win. Jimmy Thornton, Neil Wood and Mark 'Spike' Carter. And Alan Robbo saved a penalty for us. I could go on. And on... A great day. EDIT: and the legendary Russ Perkins collected the manager of the month award before the game in honour of our climb up the table in January. I'll stop now!)

Good records from 75 onwards, but had only been to 2 grounds before then, so easy to remember:

c1969: London Road, Peterborough U
1974: Abbey Lawn, Bourne T
1976: Sir Halley Stewart Field, Spalding U
1976: Nene Park, Irthlingborough D
1976: The Hollow, Potton U
1976: Carters Park, Holbeach U

So with one notable exception, all grounds and clubs still alive and well, which is nice...

27/10/84 - Gillingham 2-2 Bradford City

5 of those are still there. The only one I've not been to since is Gillingham.

I'll put some scores to some of these games

1971 Doncaster Rovers 2 Aston Villa 1 (D3)
1978 Man Utd 1 Watford 2 (LC)
1980 Everton 5 Wrexham 2 (FAC)
1980 West Ham 2 Everton 1 (FAC SF)
1981 Barnsley 1 Enfield 1 (FAC)

I can't remember much of the game at Wembley in 1972, I was only a nipper and it was a trip from School.

1. Portman Road, Ipswich 2 Portsmouth 2 sometime in the 1991/92 season.

2. Priory Stadium, Sudbury Town, probably around 1993 or 1994. No idea who the opponents were.

3. The Den, Milwall 2 Ipswich 0 (or maybe 1-0), sometime in the 1995-96 season. The only time I ever skipped school

4. Layer Road, Sudbury v Brentford in the 1996-97 FA Cup

5. Brisbane Road, no idea when probably my third most-visited ground after Ipswich and Sudbury as my best mate from school is an Orient fan.

6. Madjeski Stadium, sometime before Christmas in 1998-99, midweek game (possibly against Wigan) - went to uni there and the chef in my halls used to give out free tickets every few weeks.

[edited as I missed out Layer Road]

69/70 Stamford Bridge
70/71 The Leas (Hillingdon Boro), Wembley Stadium, Craven Cottage
72/73 Grosvenor Vale (Then Ruislip Manor, now Wealdstone), Honeycroft (Uxbridge)
I think all this was pre-dated by Clacton Town but that was to see a Donkey Derby whilst still a child so don't think it counts.

I think I am celebrating 50 years of watching the good game round about now. Like Paul I have no idea which were the first 6. I cannot put in order the first hundred or so! Sometimes I look at places my list says I have been to and I cannot remember them. Old age, no doubt.

Going by what constitutes a tick the first 6 grounds would have been recreation ground pitches, some of which I would have later had a kick around on.

From the top of my head, all early 1960`s
1. Brentford
2. Reading (Elm Park)
3. Wembley Stadium (England Schoolboys)
4. Wokingham Town (Finchampstead Road)
5. Aldershot
6. Watford
Also sometimes watched Sandhurst Town on old pitch on The Memorial Park when going down to play footie at the park

1. Old Trafford (Manchester United) - 1988
2. Boundary Park (Oldham Athletic) - 1992
3. Edgeley Park (Stockport County) - 1993
4. The Shay (Halifax Town) - 1994
5. Bower Fold (Stalybridge Celtic) - 1995
6. Brunton Park (Carlisle United) - 1998

Not too surprisingly compared to some as these are more recent all still around. One club reformed, but none completely disappeared.

Reading through these lists it seems as though schoolboy internationals were an occasion for many when we we're kids. I did two trips, 1972 and 1975. Being inside Wembley Stadium at such a young age felt special, having previously watched the Cup finals and England v Scotland games on the telly.

I forgot about recreation grounds. In which case my list is probably grounds 5 to 10 as I saw plenty of games at Shoebury Park involving Shoebury Town (pitch 1), Borough Rovers (pitch 2), and whoever was playing on pitches 3 and 4 - all Southend Borough Combination.

I didn't include recreation grounds in my list. As a kid in the 1960's a friend and I would go Doncaster racecourse on a Sunday, there are several pitches and there would be a game on each on during the morning and the same in the afternoon. We would watch a game and when it finished we would have a kickabout while the nets were still in place. The council would take down the nets after the afternoon games had finished, around 4pm during the winter months so it was the time to go home.

2. Elland Road - Leeds v West Ham (Jan 96?)
3. Old Trafford - Germany v Czech Rep (Euro '96 game)
4. Nene Park - August 1996
5. Rockingham Road - August 1996
6. Millmoor - February 1997

Mon. Feb.26, 1974 Northampton Town 2 Peterborough United 2 (Northants Senior Cup Semi-Final)
Sat. Jan.8 1977 Queens Park Rangers 2 Shrewsbury Town 1 (FA Cup 3rd Round)
Sat. Jan.22 1977 Tottenham Hotspur 1 Ipswich Town 0 (Division 1)
Sat. Mar. 5 1977 Leicester City 1 Aston Villa 1 (Division 1)
Sat. Apr. 9 1977Cambridge United 4 Aldershot 1 (Division 4)
Sat. May 21 1977 Northampton Spencer 1 Wolverton Town and BR 0 (United Counties League)

Not many people see their first ever match on a Monday afternoon, that is not a bank holiday. The afternoon kick-off was due to the power crisis.
My 7th ground was the almost obligatory schoolboy international at Wembley. 6 new grounds in 5 months was not bad for a 15 year old schoolboy on pocket money, especially as 3 of them were at first division grounds.

Just like Leo, my first six grounds don't exist anymore.
1) Oxford United
2) Didcot Town
3) Reading
4) Oxford City
5) Arsenal
6) Cardiff City
All in season 1965-66.
Also, just like Leo, my next six don't exist anymore either, namely
7) Newport County
8) Leicester City
9) Southampton
10) Coventry City
11) Middlesbrough
12) Derby County
All in 1966-67. Was it something I said!

I think my first 6 were, as I didn't keep records way back when:

Hailsham Town (Seen on two pitches at the rec but I count as one tick)
Ninian Park, Cardiff
Goldstone Ground, Brighton
White Hart Lane, Tottenham
Selhurst Park, Crystal Palace
Highbury, Arsenal

As with others, many have now gone. Edited as I forgot (?) Highbury

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Passing through stations with weird names (Princes Risborough)that I have never revisited even though I travelled all over the country supporting Mansfield.

Re: [pitch 63] where were your first half a dozen grounds? or Reply Privately

Not surprisingly, the first five were the first five games

4/11/1967 Bayview: East Fife 2 St.Mirren 1 crowd 2195; St.Mirren's only defeat in promotion season
02/1/1968 Love Street: St.Mirren 2 Stranraer 0 crowd 4157; it was a tradition for us to visit the family in the West at New Year. Recall I invaded the park after one of the goals. Have never done so again.
27/1/1968 Tannadice Dundee United 3 St.Mirren 1 crowd 9000
16/9/1968 Starks Park Raith Rovers 2 Hibs 0 crowd 5010; first time to see my team didn't go so wee
01/3/1969 Easter Road Hibs 3 St.Mirren 0 crowd 7000; birthday present; think I was also bought a toorie before the game as well (later lost on railway bridge in Aberdeen)

Yes the old man was a Buddy

The sixth was game number 9:

14/11/1970 Dens Park: Dundee 3 Airdrie 0 crowd 5500; no I don't know why either

For interest, my seventh was at Cappielow, the day of the Old Firm disaster (2/1/71), when Bobby Collins played for the 'ton.

Only 2 of the 6 having disappeared

To carryon to my first 6 non-league:

14/05/1977 Beechwood Park, Lochee (Lochee United v Kinnoull, Curry Cup Semi-final) Was at Varsity in Dundee, was onthe lookout for a game and ventured into the dark suburb
03/12/1977 Strathmore Park, Forfar (West End v Camuslang, Scottish second Round) Had intended going to see Dunfermline at Station Park, had phoned before travelling ona perishing cold day to be told it was on, until I turned up,with a busload of Pars supporters to be told it was off. All then took in this match.
14/05/1978 Warout Stadium, Glenrothes first of a long line of women's matches SWFA Cup Final: Dundee Strikers 9 Eskdale Whitehill 3
16/04/1979 Thomson Park, Lochee (Lochee United v Harp)
29/05/1979 Glenesk Park, Dundee (Violet v Arbroath Vics). I loved living in Dundee; this ground was 100 yds frommy digs, the other two in Lochee were within 800 yds.
13/04/1982 Village Park, Halbeath attendance 97; my first headcount at sadly departed ground

Football seen in: Scotland (268 grounds), England (969), Germany (289), Sweden (208), Netherlands (67), Wales (27), Ireland (S&N)(23/4), Austria (9), France (6), Denmark(5), Belgium(3),Italy(2), Luxembourg (2), Spain (2), Liechtenstein, Jersey, Switzerland, Canada
Figures correct(ish) at end of season 14-15 (1898 total)

I can't match Leo's ability to kill off clubs, but I can certainly claim to jinx grounds - I have to count down to number 8 (Cambridge United) to find a ground still being used by the same club that I watched.

Aylesbury United (Turnfurlong Lane)
Cambridge City (Milton Road v2)
Aylesbury United (Buckingham Road)
Wealdstone (Lower Mead)
Barnet (Underhill)
Tring Town (Cow Lane)

Cambridge City - on a tour of places we've never heard of and can't spell.

Re: [Merthyr Imp] where were your first half a dozen grounds? or Reply Privately

Great thread this, pity it's taken me so long to contribute.

1) Manor Ground, Sat 06/12/75 - Oxford United 2 Bristol Rovers 1

2) Loakes Park, Sat 10/09/77 - Wycombe Wanderers 0 Tooting & Mitcham United 2

3) White House Ground, Sat 17/09/77 - Oxford City 2 RC Warwick 0

4) Turnfurlong Lane, Sat 15/10/77 - Aylesbury United 1 Romford 0

5) Kenilworth Road, Sat 19/11/77 - Luton Town 1 Stoke City 2

6) Victoria Park/Eagles Road, Sat 28/01/78 - Hazells 4 Rivet Sports 2

Some might disagree with the above order. For example, I actually first visited the White House Ground on Sunday 5th December 1976 but as it was for a charity game I don't count it, although some would.
On 28th Jan 1978 we actually arrived midway through the first half at Hazells (having missed some of the goals) as our first choice had been an Aylesbury United home game which had been called off due to a waterlogged pitch. Consequently, some people would not count this, but I do. For the record, we did attend a couple more Hazells home games for which we arrived before the kick-off.

This is all OTOH.

Roker Park - Sunderland vs Swansea City
Wembley - England vs Scotland schoolboys
Ferens Park - Durham City vs Eppleton CW
Ironworks Road - Tow Law Town vs Durham City
Darlington Road - Ferryhill Ath vs Durham City
Central Avenue - Billingham Synthonia vs Durham City

Two still intact, if we distinguish between Twin Towers and Arch editions at Wembley.

1. Yeovil Town v Trowbridge Town (my first ever game & I went to it by bicycle!)
2. Torquay United v Stockport County (the start of a love-hate relationship with the Gulls!)
3. Plymouth Argyle v Preston North End
4. Exeter City v Scunthorpe United (who included a certain Joe Keegan in their squad!)
5. Brighton & Hove Albion v Walsall
6. Fulham v Macclesfield Town (classic Third Round FA Cup tie which finished 4-2)

Games dating from the 1960's. Didn't start watching non-league games regularly until I'd completed the 92 in the 1970's

That's right. His first name is Joseph and so when I saw him playing for Scunthorpe, he was referred to as "Joe". Hence the exclamation mark!

And when he played for his works team before signing for Scunny he was probably referred at as "useless" since he could only manage to get in the 3rd team.
