Given the timing, there's probably more to it than just relegation. Major problems at that club, seem to be heading for meltdown http://www.dailymail.co.uk/...rs-unpaid-wages.html.

Left field is an understatement.
If Bielsa's appointment works it's a candidate for the best coup ever.
Given both his and the club's history of patience that is also one of the biggest ifs ever too.
Some pundits suggested Mick MCarthy was a better bet,so at least something different and brave is being tried

Reminds me of Oxford Uniteds appointment of Argentinan Manager Ramon Diaz a few years ago. Didnt turn out a success.

Dunno , doubt it.
He had a spell as caretaker a few years ago ( Mellon time). Lost 4 out of 4 then , started this spell a bit better.

Precisely my reaction. Cool

If they'd appointed Pearson to rescue them from relegation and then next summer replaced him with Ranieri to have a shot at the title.....

Much as I like and respect him, I'm not at all certain that Ranieri is the guy to turn to in a relegation fight.

He had very good starts when taking over at Parma, Juventus, Roma, Inter, Monaco and of course Leicester so if he follows along those lines in a league he knows very well then he could easily lead Fulham away from the wrong end of the table.

You could argue he was never given a chance at those clubs as he was in charge a year or less, there again with the financial need to remain in the top flight he could be gone by xmas if there is repeat.Sly

Claudio wont have a squad where somebody has gifted him the brilliant Mahrez and Kante, time will tell but I reckon it's a poor choice. Sometimes managers are in the right place at the right time, like when O'Leary was gifted Eddie Grays brilliant youth side at Leeds. When Claudio was given the cheque book, he brought some right duds.

Yes although not having played for 15 years perhaps he would bring experience to the midfield.

Darren Way was handed a two-year extension on his contract only last week by the YTFC board. That'll take him through to June 2021 - and I doubt if chairman John Fry's pockets are deep enough to pay off that blunder. I was in the Yeovil end at Macclesfield on Saturday, and a significant number of Glovers fans made their feelings on that two-year extension plain to hear.

Here is a very interesting piece written on 'Taff's Gloversblog' on the excellent independent YTFC website 'Ciderspace' - an article called 'Glovers Timekeeping Is Way Off', written after the Stockport defeat and Way's signing of the contract extension but before the Macclesfield and Port Vale defeats...

It took them years and a relegation to eventually replace Sir Matt, I doubt history will be repeated, but the new man will need a big broom. It can’t help knowing that Arsenal and Chelsea have made such excellent appointments recently.

Matt Busby stepped down in 1971 and it was Tommy Docherty that took the club down to Division 2 at the end of 1973/74.

As I said, it took years to replace Busby, unless you consider Docherty an adequate replacement for the great man, Busby wasn’t properly replaced until Fergie came along, IMHO.

While their least succesful period was immediately post-Busby, leading to relegation in 1974, United were then competitive in most seasons between regaining their first division place and the appointment of Ferguson. The first few years of the SAF reign resulted in lower achievement than the post Ferguson managers, but he was given time and money to recover. Time that none of his successors were given.
If football history starts with the Premier League, then United are the most succesful team and the current period is the nadir of their fortunes.

There is a property management company in Sale, on the main road south from Old Trafford, which still has a non-ironic advert in the window for "In need of new management?" accompanied by a picture of Louis van Gaal looking masterful, which they never felt the need to change during Mourinho's rule. In wonder if they ever will.

That seems a bit unfair. Didn't he take over from Colin Murphy in 1977, more than 2 years after Derby won Division 1, who replaced Dave Mackay who was sacked after a poor run of results. He left in 1979 when Derby were still in first division and were relegated under Colin Addison next season.

I need to have the last word, as it always looks as if I am right !

To be fair to the Doc (something I really don't like doing) he took over a side at Old Trafford that included too many players that were past their best or of limited ability. Also on the scene (intermittently) was a disillusioned and disruptive G Best.

Although he was unable to save United from relegation he put together an exciting and stylish attacking team that stormed back into the top flight and was in the best United tradition.

Then when he was playing away something went wrong with the physiotherapy.

Behind the scenes issues sounds the most likely reason.

Assuming they'd go down whoever was in charge, I thought they might have kept him as their best bet to come straight back up. Like Burnley stuck with Dyche when they went down a few years ago.

Yet his position was as safe as houses when they were tumbling down the league last season. Once that TV money starts to kick in clubs become totally reliant on it.

Although still at the early stages, Paul Scholes has put himself in the frame for the job at Oldham Athletic. Question is, if appointed would this create a conflict of interest, he is part owner of Salford City? With Salford in the running for promotion both teams could meet in League 2 next season.

I would have thought the FA would contact him before he took the Oldham job and remind of this conflict of interest and maybe ask him to relinquish his part in Salford. The Notts/Ilkeston connection would have nothing on this one and cup bans wouldn't suffice.

This sacking was a surprise. Under Hill, Rochdale have enjoyed the best period of the clubs history and it was inevitable that there would be a poor season at some point. I see Rochdale as a 4th tier side for many years to come after the departure of Hill.

Might need to re-edit those last few words soon. Wink

No experience as a manager whatsoever, goes in and takes 6 points from 24 and blames owner Abdallah Lemsagam for it all. Oldham have to take a share of the blame for it because it was an appointment that was going to have one of two endings and the favourite won hands down.

Yeovil would be a good job for Darrell Clarke to make his return to management. If he doesn't save them them this season, his experience in bringing Bristol Rovers back up after their relegation from the Football League should make him their number 1 candidate.

Absolutely agree he should have been sacked last November. He lost the fans earlier in the season when he called us yobs for having the audacity to boo off his precious players & coaching staff after yet another pathetic home display. Most of those players can also follow him out of the door after Saturday's game

Not that they're EFL for much longer, but Yeovil Town's caretaker-manager Neale Marmon has left the club and reportedly returned to Germany. This is due to the collapse of the takeover bid led by New Orleans businessman Rob Couhig.

Finished a couple of points off the drop zone with three wins in the last 23 games and none in the final nine. I was also surprised by the sacking but with stats like that you can understand why club pulled the trigger.

Brighton should look at Ipswich to see the consequences of removing a stale manager.

The consequences at Ipswich are more to do with the awful choice of replacement rather than getting rid of McCarthy. If we'd have kept last season's squad, we'd have probably stayed up comfortably, but selling Waghorn and Garner and replacing them with League One players was a huge error by Hurst.

Despite how awful we were, crowds were up nearly 10% as some of those who had had enough of McCarrthy's football and attitude returned.

More likely sacked for being in the top three for most of the season and then blowing it (on a big budget). Can't be sorry for him as his brand of football at Swindon was shocking - so glad he left when he did to the Stags
