Stoneham needed a point from this game to pip Amesbury (who lost on Saturday) on goal difference; The Millers needed a win to move above Andover Town at the bottom. An important game, postponed more than once to this date, the last league game of this Wessex season. And an excellent game it was, especially in a remarkable second half - Stoneham playing well to lead 3-0 with 30 mins to go, T&E then getting three goals in 13 mins to equalise, but the visitors hung on to get the point they needed.
The first 10-15 mins were played almost exclusively in the home team's half as the visitors showed their usual power and good passing to dominate. Only one effort on goal, though, Sutherdon shooting over the bar. A cross from the left then saw Welch stretch for the ball at the far post but it was an easy save for home keeper Jones. A Manning cross from the right gave Jones a little trouble too. The home team were battling well, and started to come into it - Matthews had their first chance, shooting over, after more than half an hour. On 41 mins the visitors took the lead as Glasspool picked the ball up from a throw, produced a lovely turn and hammered it into the far corner. They nearly increased their lead as Welch had a long shot wide and Laptas ran through but Jones came out well to block him. HT 0-1.
After the break the Millers' Wood had a shot saved after 47 mins - Stoneham broke straight up the other end and sub Clark, looking as if he might have been offside, drilled a shot from the right across Jones and into the far corner to put the Purps two up. After a Glasspool free-kick was saved, Stoneham went three ahead on 58 mins as there was a scramble from a corner, Laptas' shot was cleared off the line but Welch netted the rebound. Caballero also forced a save from Jones as Stoneham were rampant. A couple of young subs came on for the home team and looked useful, but a Kana'ah free-kick was all the homesters had to offer (it was saved) until the 70th minute, when they unexpectedly pulled a goal back as a corner caused panic in the visiting defence; we nearly had an own goal before T&E's Wood headed in the rebound. Caballero had another chance for the Purps but shot way over, and the Millers then pulled another goal back with a shot from the edge of the area by Burns which wasn't that hard but was very accurately into the corner. The home team attacked again and got a penalty for a foul in the area - captain Vidler converting emphatically, to tie it up with 7 mins to go. You can imagine that the visitors were rather worried at this point, but they decided that the best way to defend was to try and keep the ball in their opponents' half, as they had done at the start. In doing this they created two chances for Glasspool, one well saved by Jones coming out, one put wide after jinking p[ast defender and keeper. Caballero also shot over in injury time but just after that Stoneham could celebrate after a gallant comeback by the home team. We saw the trophy being presented - well done to a friendly family club.
No changes at Little Testwood since my last visit - just behind AFC Totton's ground, and very much the 'little brother' of a team with a fairly flawed stadium (IMO) themselves. As you enter, one wooden main stand, other brick buildings housing changing rooms, tea bar, hospitality room, all on the near side. Dugouts opposite, quite pleasantly tree-lined on three sides. Parking pretty difficult today, I was about to be surprised by the popularity of the game (decent crowd anyway, to be fair) but then noticed there was a Southampton Junior B final on at AFC Totton as well. Good crowd there too.
If you're going to/been to a Hampshire Premier League match, I'd really appreciate you filling in a questionnaire - available in the Groundhopping/General section, or just PM me for a copy. Thanks.
