Premier Midweek Floodlit League Can't Post or Reply Privately

Long shot I know but does anyone have the final group tables for the PMFL for seasons 1968/9, 1969/70, 1975/6, 1976/7 and 1977/8 for the groups that included Leatherhead

can't quite help but my PMFL handbook for 1973-74 states that Leatherhead finished League runner-up during 1969-70. The following season they won their section - if that helps but then again you probably know that.
Incidentally, the handbook shows the final section tables for 1972-73 but does not give the play-off results!!

If my memory serves me correctly the playoffs were held over to the start of the following season, my team Leyton lost to Dagenham, 1-7 in one semi-final, the other 3 teams in the otherside of the playoff draw all withdrew, and the PML subsequently declared the playoffs null and void with no trophy awarded

This will probably get misaligned as I don't know how to use a fixed-width font on these things, but (with many thanks to Roy Stanton, with whom I've been comparing PMFL notes in recent weeks), here are some of the tables you requested, and also an alternative version of events on the 1972/3 Play-Offs:

1968/9 SECTION C Wimbledon 14 11 2 1 44 9 29 6 1 0 5 1 1 Tooting & Mitcham United 14 8 2 4 38 17 21 5 0 2 3 2 2 Leatherhead 14 8 2 4 28 22 21 5 0 2 3 2 2 Redhill 14 6 5 3 28 22 19 4 2 1 2 3 2 Dulwich Hamlet 14 5 3 6 17 24 16 2 2 3 3 1 3 Bexley United 14 3 5 6 17 25 12 2 3 2 1 2 4 Carshalton Athletic 14 1 4 9 17 34 6 1 3 3 0 1 6 Hounslow 14 2 1 11 6 42 5 2 1 4 0 0 7

1969/70 SECTION C Leatherhead 14 10 4 0 30 10 28 6 1 0 4 3 0 Tooting & Mitcham United 14 8 3 3 23 12 24 3 1 3 5 2 0 Wimbledon 14 7 3 4 23 23 21 3 3 1 4 0 3 Carshalton Athletic 14 5 2 7 29 28 13 4 1 2 1 1 5 Hampton 14 4 4 6 13 18 13 3 2 2 1 2 4 Finchley 14 4 2 8 16 27 12 2 1 4 2 1 4 Dulwich Hamlet 14 4 2 8 19 23 11 3 0 4 1 2 4 Horsham 14 3 2 9 9 21 9 2 2 3 1 0 6

In the above, the columns represent P W D L F A Pts HW HD HL AW AD AL.

1972/3 CHAMPIONSHIP PLAY-OFFS
* denotes tie held over to following season
PRELIMINARY MATCH 11򊤋3* Hayes v Dagenham - Dagenham won by default SEMI-FINALS 17򉕛3 Wycombe Wanderers 3 Horsham 0 14򊤋3* Dagenham 8 Leyton 1 FINAL
16򊤋3* Wycombe Wanderers v Dagenham* - Dagenham won by default

Up to & including 1973/4, 2 points were awarded for a home win, and 3 for an away win (a format tried in the early years of what is now the Conference). In 1974/5, this was changed to 3 points for a home win, 4 for an away win, and a bonus point for a win by 3 or more goals. It would appear that the 1973/4 play-offs were a bit of a fiasco, and what was a well-supported competition lost a lot of credibility.

I've always referred to the competition as the Premier Midweek Floodlit League, but I notice from a couple of scanned Handbooks that Roy has kindly sent me, that it appears to have been called the (slightly less grammatical) Premier Midweek Floodlight League.

I've been looking at the competition (along with several others in which Staines Town were involved, eg Mithras, Isthmian Youth, Southern Combination, and Staines Hospital Cups) and would appreciate anyone with the following PMFL tables -
1969/70 Play-Offs [1 Wycombe, 2 Leatherhead, 3 Walton]
1971/2 Play-Offs [1 Slough, 2 Walton, other section winners Leytonstone, Hayes], and F:A columns for Sections A, B & D.
1972/3 W/D/L columns for Sections A, B, D & E.
1973/4 - confirmation that no play-off games were played.
Of the last four seasons (1974/5, 75/6, 76/7, and what I believe was the last edition in 77/8), all I have is a solitary Section D table from 74/5.

If anyone has any result grids, or lists of results for individual teams, of course ...

Haven't got any tables from this competition and we're missing some results but this is what we know about Camberley's involvement if it helps any.

22/12/76 Southall & Ealing Borough 2 Camberley 1
02/02/77 Camberley 0 Leatherhead 2
09/03/77 Addlestone 1 Camberley 0
14/03/77 Camberley 1 Southall & Ealing 1

25/10/77 Camberley 3 Redhill 1
15/11/77 Camberley 0 Bromley 1
10/01/78 Camberley 0 Tooting & Mitcham United 2
31/01/78 Bromley 1 Camberley 1
13/04/78 Tooting & Mitcham 1 Camberley 0
??/??/?? Egham 3 Camberley 0

The dates should all be correct but I'm in the process of correcting anything in our archive and I'm only up to 1965 at the moment.

If anyone can fill in any gaps or supply tables I'd be delighted to hear from them (apart from mitchg of course who I'm already in contact with. Wink )

Thanks everyone - greatly appreciated.
I think there were two sections in 1967/8 as Wimbledon were not in the same section as Walton

Hi
I believe there was just one section for the first two seasons (no play-off required), then it started expanding to further sections. As far as I can tell, the numbers were -

Season ..... Sections ... Teams... ..........Notes...........................................
1965/6 ..... .....1..... .......10..... No play-off
1966/7 ..... .....1..... .......12..... No play-off
1667/8 ..... .....2..... .......16.....
1968/9 ..... .....3..... .......24..... Play-Off played on group basis
1969/70 ... .....3..... .......24.....
1970/1 ..... .....4..... .......32..... inc Wimbledon, who withdrew after 7 games; Play-Offs: 2 Semis & a Final
1971/2 ..... .....4..... .......31..... Play-Offs: 2 Semis & a Final
1972/3 ..... .....5..... .......30..... Play-Offs: Prelim Match; 2 Semis & a Final
1973/4 ..... .....5..... .......30..... Play-Offs apparently not played
1974/5 ..... ...?4+.... ........?...... There were at least 4 sections
1975/6 ..... .....?..... ........?......
1976/7 ..... .....?..... ........?......
1977/8 ..... .....?..... ........?......

A delayed response!

Are you able to summarise the rules for the Premier Spring Cup? Is there any indication as to the teams invited/permitted to enter?

Unfortunately I've only got the handbooks for 1969/70, 1970/71 and 1971/72 seasons.

I know when I was double checking the accuracy of the league tables for the book I wrote on MUFC that the final table involving the club in 1974/75 season (Section A) was inaccurate with regards to gf-ga, but with the help of others I was able to produce a results grid and resolve the discrepancy. I've got all of the final group tables involving Maidenhead although we didn't enter in 1975/76 season and our sections in 1976/77 (A) and 1977/78 (C) were never completed by the deadline imposed by the competition, but I've got the tables as they were at that time. If anyone wants any of them, just get in touch.

Premier Midweek Floodlight League Roll of Honour [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Another snippet has come to light in that my recently acquired copy of the Leytonstone v Staines Town programme from the end of the 1976-7 season refers to them (a) winning their first trophy in 4 years, and (b) mentions that there are still some photo's available in the club shop of the skipper with the PMFL trophy. From this I deduce that Leytonstone were the competition winners that season. Regrettably, they only did a "teamsheet" when Staines visited the next season, so there's no honours list to check against.

Merging all these posts together gives the following incomplete roll of honour for this competition:

PREMIER MIDWEEK FLOODLIGHT LEAGUE

Season ... Champions ............. Runners-Up ................... Other Section Winners

1965/66 Stevenage Town .... Finchley ......................... -
1966/67 Hillingdon Borough ... Wimbledon ..................... -
1967/68 Walton & Hersham .. Wimbledon ...................... -
1968/69 Walton & Hersham .. Hillingdon Borough ............ Wimbledon
1969/70 Wycombe Wanderers Leatherhead ................... Walton & Hersham
1970/71 Walton & Hersham .. Wycombe Wanderers ........ Barking, Leatherhead
1971/72 Slough Town ......... Walton & Hersham ............ Leytonstone, Hayes
1972/73 Dagenham ............ Wycombe Wanderers ......... Leyton, Horsham, Hayes
1973/74 unplayed? ............. unplayed? ....................... Wycombe Wanderers, Barking, Slough Town, Kingstonian, Horsham
1974/75 unplayed .............. unplayed ........................ Barking (declared joint champions - but with whom?); Molesey, Chesham United
1975/76 Hayes .................. Feltham ......................... Barking, (+other/s?)
1976/77 Leytonstone ......... Tooting & Mitcham United .. Hayes
1977/78 Barking ................. Farnborough Town ........... Bromley, Hayes

PREMIER SPRING CUP

taken from the Leytonstone handbook for 1973-74

premier midweek floodlight league 1972-73 results

24.10.72 v. Harlow H 2-0; 13.11.72 v. Daggers A 1-0; 23.01.73 v. Avenue H 1-0; 30.01.73 v. Cheshunt H 4-0; 06.02.73 v. Barnet A 3-1; 13.02.73 v. Cheshunt A 0-0; 06.03.73 v. Avenue A 1-2; 27.03.73 v. Harlow A 0-1; 19.04.73 v. Daggers H 2-1; 11.05.73 v. Barnet H 1-1.

The manager wrote: "We did have a chance to qualify for the final stages of the Floodlight competition, but missed out when we drew with Barnet 1-1 in May. We needed a 2-goal victory to secure a semi-final place. Due to fixture pile-up and other associated returns the committee decided not to compete in this league this season.

The notes I made at the time say that because of a four month floodlight ban, the 73/74 competition wasn't completed. Clubs had too much of a fixture backlog to play. The only games played later in the competition were just those necessary to decide which clubs won the groups so even the group matches weren't all played

Has anyone got a correct final table for 1966/67 please, else I'm going to have to start trying to collect results and create a grid!

Thanks.

Leatherhead ....... ... ... ... 22 .... 5 ... 2 ... 15 ... 21 ... 42 ... 13

I did try to do a grid for this and in fact for all the other seasons, but didn't get very far!

Can anyone verify these results (+ any other info, eg scorers, attendances, line-ups ... but let's not be greedy, results would be a great start) of the following PMFL games, which I have deduced purely from league tables:

Season 1974/5 (Group D)
23.12.74 Addlestone 0 Staines Town 1
21.01.75 Hayes 0 Staines Town 0
(I'm also missing scorers for a number of other Staines games that season, if anyone can help).

Unfortunately this also disagrees with results to hand for Wimbledon and Leatherhead. I believe that I now have more final tables than there were clubs involved!

As just one of a thousand other things to do this has been on the back-burner, but I have just looked at how far I'd got and it appears that if the Finchley results could be confirmed then I could produce a complete grid, and thus a correct final table. Unfortunately the club themselves have been unable to help.
