The Damned/New Rose

An absolute classic!!

My girls are not impressed!! Cool

Funny you should say that Dave, my lad asked me what I listened to when I was his age a week or so ago... I knocked up a "mix CD" (that's what these young un's call 'em isn't it?) with a cross section of what I listened to at 14. New Rose was on (I saw the Damned when I was 13, Rat Scabies signed my jeans) along with some Ruts, X-Ray Specs, Pistols et al... he said "Dad, this is wa**!" Unsure

Likewise, my daughter (not too bad - into Muse, Lostprophets, Nightwish, Within Temptation) has been asking about my older stuff so I'm hoping she'll enjoy Pink Floyd. I've recently re-discovered A Momentary Lapse of Reason and it doesn't half stand up all these years on - can't be 23 years !!!

I love this - On the Turning Away

The album sounded better live, due to some crappy 80's technology making the drums sound like synths, or was it the other way roundWink

The album is effectively Gilmour, Ezrin and another bloke i cant remember, with mason on drums. I used to love it back in the day, but I think its aged badly.

Meddle, Animals and Atom Heart Mother are my current faves

Whilst on the subject of the Floyd I was at The Earls Court gig on the night they filmed "pulse" that came out video and then later DVD.

Another vote for New Rose (its on my mp3 player). Been trying to get my 4 year old into The Ramones (he heard Rockaway Beach on a Scooby Doo cartoon and loves it!). He also seemed particularly keen on Beat On The Brat. However, he spends far too much time with his mum and now proclaims his favourite group is JLS! Mad

Funny you should mention JLS - I asked my nephew (15yo) what he wanted for Christmas... yes, he did. Liam asked his cousin the expected "are you gay?" He supports Man Ure as well. My lad seems to have Stone Roses on an unending loop. When he was Will's age, he was into the Happy Mondays.

My girls have heard the Pistols 'Anarchy In The UK' countless times over the years and professed not to like it. Now they've got it on 'Guitar Hero' they play it all the time. Crazy

Another "thumbs up" for New Rose by The Damned here! My kids are 15 and 13 and thankfully there is not even the slightest hint of JLS in my house! The lad is into Pendulum, Prodigy and Muse whilst my little lady is into Green Day, Avril Lavigne and Lifehouse.

All I can say is that at least my kids like "honest" and "proper" music which is more than any of their mates do (some of them can't see past what is on X Factor and GMTV!). My big regret though is that my kids just don't like The Fall. Where did it all go wrong!?!

As Willie Nelson says, ain't it funny how time slips away...

Thanks to the joys of modern technology, I've been re-acquainting myself with what I think of as 'new' music: Doll By Doll (1977), The Records (1980), The Movies (1979), Fashion (1982) and Magazine (1980). Only just realised it's all thirty years old.

Re the above: perfectly happy with Pink Floyd up to and including Animals; haven't heard the Damned for a good while but I'm sure they're still fun; but I have to ask - who or what are JLS?

Probably just as well I don't possess any children. Does the world need any more Deadheads?

JLS are another in a long line of boy band / alledged soul / vocal harmony pap that my mrs thinks passes for music.

To be fair she has been with me to Billy Bragg, Morrissey & Shed Seven gigs and quite enjoyed it (she bought the cd of BB support act Wallis Bird). She draws the line at accompanying me to see Half Man Half Biscuit though!

I can understand the comments regarding Floyd up to and including Animals and I seem to recall being slightly disappointed by Momentary Lapse and the Division Bell when they were released, but that was probably more to do with the fact that they weren't Dark Side 2 or WYWH2 or whatever.
Re-listening to them in isolation many years since I last played them, they sound brilliant and I don't quite agree with DavyC in that they've dated that much. Maybe not the absolute best of Floyd but still good enough to see off most competition!
I only got to see them at Bingley Hall, Stafford (anyone remember that smelly dump?) on the Animals tour, and at Maine Road on the Momentary Lapse tour when for some reason I was overcome and collapsed in the standBlush

I'll give them both another listen. However, I never liked The Wall, and you will never convince me that The Final Cut is worth spending 40 valuable minutes on ever again.

Am I alone in my admiration for Dave Gilmour's first solo album?

Top of the playlist in the car this week is the complete works of Big Star. RIP Alex Chilton.

Girls...20 year old is into Metallica, Slipknot, Green Day, Muse

15 year old is into Metallica, Lily Allen and anything she can play on 'Guitar Hero.' She tends to be influenced by her older sister which isn't a bad thing.

13 year old is into JLS, Parramore, Lady Gaga etc. Basically any pop pap she can torture the rest of us with. Unsure

The lad is 19 and into Disney stuff. But he is autistic so I can make allowances for him. Cool

My partner is into some reasonably good stuff (Metallica, Stereophonics, Oasis, Linkin Park) and some bloody awful stuff (Robby Williams, Anastacia, the Corrs)

One band they all dislike is the Fall. They just don't get them at all. My partner has a particular dislike for 'The Man Whose head Expanded' which is a shame because it's one of my favourites. Unsure

I would say imo 'reasonably good stuff' and oasis, linkin park, strerochronics and metallica dont belong in the same sentenceWink

The Falls current line up is as good as I have ever seen live, manchester gig late last year was top draw. If anyone wants a starting point for the Fall, I would point them in the direction of The Peel Sessions Box set (ok its 8 discs and 30 odd quid, but its bloody superb)

Totally agree with that advice Davy C. I would also recommend "458489 A Sides" or "50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong" which are both good compilation/best of albums and are of course a little less pricey. The cheapest way to hear stuff that you might not be familiar with is by listening to Spotify. In fact I find that Spotify and "Audacity" make a very good, free bedmates if you need to "permanently" add music to your collection!Wink

I taped (is that what you do when burning onto cd?) all my albums a couple of years ago. I'm doing the singles now.
I never bought much by The Cure - just a few singles and the Standing On A Beach Compilation. I used to have The Cure In Orange on video which was alright.
I rarely do live albums though. They just don't do anything for me, especially dodgy bootlegs.
And no JJ - Culture Club are not on my playlist. I must own up to having owned one or two of their records at some point in time but I've got a valid excuse. I used to be a record dealer in the 1990's and picked up records from all sorts of places. I've bought some job lots in my time with all sorts of horrors included.
These days I rarely buy but am selling my stuff on eBay. I'm currently converting Mega City Four onto cd but I've got a backlog in actually listening to the cds which is why I'm still on The Cult Maniax. I only drove to and from work today so didn't get past them. It's nearly exciting as I'm never quite sure what'll be coming up next as I'm driving along.
