Do you think Tom is aspiring to be a commentator? Rolling out the same old cliches they do.

And there are even some who are brazen enough to suggest that Owen dived at two world cups to win penalties.

True, if I remember right against Argentina, Owen went down at a soft touch, and Collina who was refeering pointed the penalty spot straight away. Same old eyeties always cheating.

The 'Bloody Italians' will be heading homeSly!

When was the last time the previous winner and runner up both went out in the group stages?

Its never happened that both finalists were knocked out in the following group stage. However there have been two occasions in which neither of the previous finalists reached the second round of the next tournament - first in 1934 holders Uruguay declined to enter whilst 1930 runners up Argentina sent a weak team and lost to Sweden in the first round (the competition being a straight knockout then). In 1950 holders Italy finished runners up to Sweden (again) in their first round group from which only the winners qualified for the final stage. Meanwhile 1938 finalists Hungary failed to enter.

He's young and optimistic. Give him a few years of near misses and incidents whereby we contrive to shoot ourselves in the foot and he'll start to become just as realistic and cynical as us. Tongue
