Sunday Sept 1st

Super League.

Wakefield Trinity 16 Wigan Warriors 24.

Adm 25.
Prog- Don't issue.
Att 5,805.
Carlsberg 4.

Simple rail trip to Sandal & Agbrigg with just one change at Donny in both directions saw me turn up at Belle Vue for the umpteenth time against Wigan and after seeing the visitors get a thumping here on more than one occasion this was a pretty close run thing with the first half being ruined by the appalling conditions brought on by the rain. A Liam Marshall treble helped send Warriors to second place in the table with just two rounds remaining of the regular season.

Looking like this old venue is going to be around for a good few more years as plans have been announced to build a new stand. I always enjoy this place even more so since the smoking ban was reversed!!.

Friday August 30
East Leeds 16-16 Clock Face Miners
Admission: free
Attendance: c60

The pitch where this was played was about 7 minutes walk south of the clubhouse. Fine for us as the closest bus connections were already on that side of Cross Green, so a 6:05 PR2 bus from Neville Street had us there in good time. But the visitors had not long since arrived, so kick off was delayed a bit. They changed on the coach, rather than head up and back, although it appeared some home fans made that journey for a pint.

This pitted 10th v 9th inthe last game, with the homesters 2 points behind and staring relegation in the face, I believe. But a massive points differential meant this waqs effectievly playing for pride. What we got was a close game throughout, a good few handling errors and evidence why these these two are at the wrong end of the table but ultimately a cracking game.

The home side dropped the ball from the kick off, in front of their own line but the visitors could not get over in their 6. First half was nip and tuck - the visitors missing a penalty late on to go in 12-10 down. They got ahead with a 2nd half try but late on the homesters equalised with a try but then missed the conversion. With 3 minutes to go, the visitors put a high kick up field - which ended up sailing through the posts but did not count as a drop goal. Drop goal attempts thereafter failed and the match finished level.

Pre-match pint at The Hop, by a back entrance to Leeds station.

RL Ground #34. Sunday September 8th 2019, KO 3pm, Rugby League Championship at Craven Park. Barrow Raiders 24-18 (18-16 HT) Batley Bulldogs, admission 17 (2 extra into stand), Programme 2.50, Pin Badge 3, Attendance 1,214.

Once in a while you visit a venue that totally justifies the ridiculous amount of time spent on a/b roads and motorways collecting sports venues, Craven Park is one, an absolute corker! On the last day of the Championship season, Barrow, already relegated to the third tier hosted Yorkshire visitors in Batley, who themselves had just had a very poor season.

Just 26 miles from our billet in Bowness this 'hard to get to' venue was a must visit. I spent twenty minutes prior to kick off exploring all nooks and crannies of this fabulous old ground with its extensive terracing. The first half was entertaining being end to end although not surprisingly being of high quality, too many handling errors, forward passes and penalties given away.

The second half if anything was worse, but Barrow held on for their first win since June, to do the double over Batley, and on a mild, partly sunny afternoon who cared about the quality. Add it to your list!
