Sunday September 1st Minor Counties West Wiltshire v Shropshire at Marlborough Cricket and Hockey Club. Shropshire 123 58.5 overs Wiltshire 140-6 48 overs. Scorecard 1 Raffle 1 (I won one of the prizes).
It is unusual for me to get an opportunity to see Minor Counties cricket in September but with the last set of games being pushed back in recent years I had the chance to go down to Marlborough whose ground is beyond the eastern side of the town. The only buildings in sight are the clubhouse and a house beyond the other side of the ground. There are some sweeping vistas to be seen although the stiff breeze throughout the day's play did make it somewhat parky if you choose to sit in one of the more exposed parts of the ground. The pitch is on a slight plateau above the surrounding area with the pavilion at the end of a long drive from the main road. Bottom but one Shropshire had nothing to play for but their pride but Wiltshire needed a win to ensure that they finished in the first four thus clinching a place in the new Division One West next season (they duly accomplished this in a low scoring game on the second day). A 10.30 start caught me out but Shropshire's progress was funereal and they also lost wickets at regular intervals.

Minor Counties Western Division Berkshire v Dorset at Wargrave Cricket Club Day 2 Berkshire 439-8 and 230-4 declared Dorset 150 and 92 for 0 Scorecard 1 No raffle.
After the splendour of Marlborough's wonderful ground the day before it was very much back to earth here at this rather unattractive ground in a nondescript village just outside Reading for the clash with Dorset (1st v 3rd in the Western). It is part of a recreation ground which does not help. There was very little in the way of shade here with very few trees in the immediate vicinity with various facilities dotted around the perimeter. There are plenty of houses nearby but not of sufficient quality design to overcome my initial impression that this is a rather plain ground with little to attract the casual cricket watcher. On the pitch there was clearly a huge gap in class between the two teams but both myself and lordcleeoftilehill were mystified by Berkshire's refusal to enforce the follow on given the huge first innings lead they had amassed. Berkshire cruised to victory on the third day despite Dorset's spirited start to their second innings on the second evening.

I took the day off work this morning to watch the last day of Middlesex v Durham at Lords as I was hoping for an exciting finish. Middlesex were in contention up to lunch when they had lost only four wickets but they collapsed after the resumption and Durham won by 44 runs at around 2.30 pm. So perhaps not a great idea taking the day off work but at least it was interesting to see the demolition of the Compton and Edrich stands in progress. OK, they weren't actually demolishing the stands but a lot of work was going on which would still have been distracting to the batsmen. A large white hoarding had been placed along the front of these stands for the whole width of the Nursery End but it was not high enough to prevent a digger and other vehicles (some of which had flashing lights) being visible. These stands were only built as recently as 1989-90 and it is to be hoped that their replacements last a lot longer. If watching building/demolition contractors busy at work appeals to you, then you have another opportunity to do so on Monday 23rd September when Middlesex take on Derbyshire in another four-day game. Entry to the ground will again be via the Grace Gates only.
