Thursday 30th May.

Polish Champ Q/R.

Krakow.

Att 700ish

Adm £3, they'd run of out progs by the time we got there, but i had allready done my own. One of the more awkward tracks to find in Poland, tucked away a bit, but only 400 yard walk from the tram line on the outskirts of this lovely City.

Thursday 7th June.

Ipswich 51-41 Edinburgh.

Adm £15. Didn't bother with prog.

Att 1200 ish.

Saturday 9th June.

Euro champ Q/R in Braila.

Free adm, no prog, no drinks, no food, but luckily only a 15 walk from the only decent restuarant in the Town.

Att 4-5000.

The free admission certainly attracted a good crowd and created a bit of an atmosphere, we were told that this is a very poor area, and if they charged even £2, hardly anyone would have turned up. We were given VIP passes and we eventually found some progs hidden away after the meeting, even the referee didn't see them. Weekend got off to a bad start, Blueair flight from Luton-Bucharest delayed 8 hours due to a knackered plane. But to their credit they found one and got it to Luton, so all we missed was a few hours kip. The wonderful crumbling municipal stadium is also used by the towns football club C.F. Braila, a typical old eastern block ground. Not a bad meeting, but we weren't expecting that much, just nice to get Romania's only track visited for a FIM meeting, always best to do these types of tracks for an FIM meeting, you know they'll go ahead come rain or shine. Very tiring trip, but worth it, and hopefully after the mega delay Friday evening we should be entitled to a nice bit of compensationSlySlySly.

The plan this week is weather permitting.

Tuesday Isle of Wight v Hackney National League and Friday Coventry v Kings Lynn Elite League or Somerset v Workington Premier League.

If anyone is going to Isle of Wight this season the travel arrangements are 18.15 or 18.45 Catamaran to Ryde then Taxi from the Pier Head (Ryde Taxis who are based at the Stadium) Taxi back after meeting. Best thing to do is after Heat 14 go round to near entrance to watch heat 15 and then Taxis are ready to go straight after meeting hopefully will get you back for 21.47 Cat if meeting is late finishing then will get 22.47 Cat. Speedway Flyer ticket is £21.50 includes Cat, Taxi, Entrance and Programme.

Speedway visits in the last few weeks are as follows :

Monday 23rd May Eastbourne 55 v 41 Peterborough Elite League Att 800 Approx
Tuesday 24th May Isle of Wight 53 v 39 Belle Vue Colts (At Lakeside) National League Att 200 Approx
Friday 27th May Hackney 42 v 48 Dudley Heathens National League Att 300 Approx
Saturday 4th June Eastbourne 46 v 44 Kings Lynn Elite League Att 1350 Approx
Friday 10th June Lakeside 63 v 29 Birmingham Elite League Att 750 Approx

Admission Prices were Eastbourne £16 both meetings plus £2 Programme both meetings. Isle of Wight £21.50 Speedway Flyer Ticket, Hackney Admission £12 Prog £1, Lakeside £16 Prog £2.50.

Saturday 18th June-LEICESTER LIONS 28 GLASGOW TIGERS 62

Admission-£16 Programme-£2.50 Attendance-around 800

LIONS SAVAGED BY TIGERS-should be the newspaper headline as Leicester were completely overrun by a rampant Glasgow side; two 5-1 scores for the visitors in the first two heats set the tone for the evening and it was a very poor evening of speedway. The track is situated in the new shopping complex of Beaumont Leys and is an old landfill site; the owners have done marvels to get the track and ground up to scratch in such a short time; however it is still very much work in progress around tthe environs of the site; inside there are tow covered stands each holding around 250 spectators either side of the referees box; on the far side is a long, narrow covered terrace area with both ends open to the elements. Parking is available inside the speedway area and in some of the areas of the shopping complex. After initial crowds of around 4000 their support is starting to dwindle and will carry on even lower unless they can provide sterner opposition.

Sheffield v Leicester on Thursday. I was also at Leicester on Saturday, but, dismal as they were, they have riders who are well equipped to score well at Owlerton, so they should put up more of a fight.

Saturday; Annual meet everyone event at Cardiff with some below par racing for afters,

Sunday 26th June
3pm

NATIONAL LEAGUE KO CUP SEMI-FINAL 1st leg
Stoke Potters 62 – Dudley Heathens 32

A scorching Sunday afternoon and the meeting was delayed an hour and three quarters because a paramedic was not available. When it did get going it was four straight 5-1’s to the Potters which the Heathens never recovered from.

Tuesday’s 2nd leg could be over fairly quickly.

£12 admission including Match Magazine & Racecard (16 pages). An extra £1 to park trackside.

A large turnout of “Heathens” in a crown of around 400 (maybe).

Can you remember who you were, before they told you who you should be?

Sunday 26th June

Mildenhall 'Fen Tigers' 47 Buxton 'Hitmen' 43

Crowd - Approx 750-800

Entrance - Adults £10 Programe £1.50

Another good meeting at West Row, although the track wasn't quite up to the standard of the previous five meetings. The introduction (finally) of young Aussie 15 year old Cameron Heeps at reserve added to the theatre and he didn't let the crowd down with a 2+3 return on debut. A name to waych out for in the future. As is Robert Branford who fired a 15 point five ride maximum for the visitors.

Since the new promotion of Chris Louis, Mike Lee and Kevin Jolly have taken over the club has moved from a shambolic mess of the last five years to a well run one very quickly, add in a good announcer and ex Mildenhall legend Robert Henry as Team Manager and all looks very promising.

Next meeting at home is Sunday 17th July when Isle of Wight visit for the 1st leg of the KO Cup Semi final, one not to be missed!!

Saturday 2nd July 2011
Leicester Lions 44 Edinburgh Monarchs 49
Premier League
Admission £15 (overpriced)
Programme £2.50 (32pp)
Attendance: 2,000 (estimate)
Free parking

My first speedway meeting in almost exactly three years and not, given the poor reputation of the new Leicester track, as dull as I was expecting. There wasn't a huge amount of overtaking, but at least there was some, notably when Richard Hall passed Edinburgh guest Claus Vissing to win heat four and Monarchs rider Matthew Wethers went from third to first in heat eight. That said, I certainly wouldn't want to watch speedway at Beaumont Park every week. The facilities, for a modern speedway venue, are pretty good - though that says more about some of the timeworn dumps in which this sport is staged than anything remarkable Leicester have achieved. A covered terrace, two temporary seating stands and earth banking does not a stadium make.

Leicester, who gave home debuts to Henning Bager and Ashley Morris, never looked like scoring a rare victory. Providing just four of the 15 race winners did not help their cause. Edinburgh, the reigning Premier League champions, were always ahead, though the gap between the teams did close to two points between heats seven and nine. An Edinburgh 5-1 in the crucial heat 13 finished the home challenge, though the Lions made the final score respectable when Richard Hall won the penultimate race, getting double points (speedway's most ridiculous rule) from a tactical ride to secure an 8-1 heat advantage.

There was little in the way of crowd atmosphere. Edinburgh's travelling support did their best, but Leicester's fans have, it seems, become accustomed to losing and bored by the largely processional racing. Clearly, remedial action with the track simply has to be taken this winter. The merest glance indicates the straights are too long for the tightness of the bends. A bit like Brough Park, Newcastle. The racing's indifferent there, too. Given that Leicester started with a blank canvas (no squeezing a shale circuit inside a dog track), how did they get it so badly wrong?

The Lions issue a better than average speedway programme (though that's not difficult), despite a simply appalling cover design. Whoever came up with the dreadful mixture of ugly fonts must have the sort of eye on which nothing jars.

Just watched the WC Final from Gorzow on delayed transmission; what a fantastic meeting - a world away from any club track in the UK and while the Poles continue to invest in the sport, the more they will dominate. Only the Aussies offered any real competition. Have they any tracks of note over there by the way and, if they have, what are the chances of them getting to host a GP meeting ?

If Wiki can be beleived the 2002 Australian Grand Prix was held here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telstra_Stadium won by Greg Hancock.

I watch the Swedish Speedway on Premier Sport, their tracks are like the Polish ones, though the stadia are not so grand. For British Riders Polish and Swedish tracks must seem totally different to many British ones. Imaging riding Rye House and then going to a Polish track.

In the Semi at Kings Lynn one of the UK riders said if Ben Barker could score a few more points we would be ok, I thought I least he has managed to stay on his bike unlike a number of the other riders who had all been excluded for crashing.

Sat 16th July

Leicester 45 Sheffield 48

Bit of a win-win for me, as well as the Tigers winning, it was great to see my friend Magnus Karlsson return to British Speedway with a maximum. Nice to catch up with Magnus (even if the Tigers couldn't), before and after the match. Good that he has signed for Leicester as we have been going quite regularly this season.

As for the match, the track staff did well bearing in mind the amount of rain, and indeed the track record was broken again this week, by Graversen in heat 1. unfortunately for him he was off the pace for the rest of the meeting.Sheffield basically having more strength in depth, with Lambert in particular providing good support .

Fixtures, weather permitting for this week exclusively involving Workington.

Thu; Tigers v Workington
Sat; Workington v Tigers
Sun; Leicester v Workington.
