"I think London Midland are trying to get everyone to buy a ticket at least 2 hrs in advance then just print it off at the ticket machine. Good idea?"

What if you go somewhere on the sur of the moment, maybe a late postponement & you change your travel plans?

And how do you buy a ticket in advance if you don't have a computer at home?

I thought if the ticket office was shut, the ticket machine was broken and the permit to travel machine was empty (thinking of Goring Station) you could board a train but you must try and contact the "train manager / supervisor" asap. There must be a way because many of the smaller stations around Oxford seem to have no way of buying a ticket in advance other than online.

I don't see why the onus should be on the passenger to walk up and down a train trying to find the guard (or whatever they are called) who might well be hiding up asleep somewhereWink!

As I understand it you just pay on the train or at the station you get off at.

Anyway. I hope some people will understand the points I am trying to make but I won't hold my breath

Is that your last word on the matter ?

Yes. erm no. Maybe

Any train company thought of a Brum oyster card, or a similar national system?

I think London Midland are trying to get everyone to buy a ticket at least 2 hrs in advance then just print it off at the ticket machine. Good idea?

Oyster Card?? There's another thing to rant about!Unsure

They work alright on buses where a simple flat fare is deducted when you board but on the trains they are a nightmare with passengers regularly being overcharged.

If I'm going to London on the train and making other journies there I stick to the one day Travelcard which is a lot less hassle!

I guess this boils down to what you think is a realistic target.

The one that is in the DfT Penalty Fares policy documents and/or the one that is in the train company's Customer Charter.

I, unlike most people on here I would guess, have worked in a ticket office. I know that sometimes it can take 5 minutes to issue one ticket once you have got all the information from the passenger. In my opinion at certain times 5 minutes isn't a lot of time when you have a queue of maybe 10 people waiting.

I have worked in a ticket office and agree, in some cases, it could take 5 mins to issue a ticket. However, the office was staffed to take this into into account. If that is no longer the case then it is not the fault of the remaining staff, but equally it is not the fault of the passenger either.

But then again I know it can be frustrating waiting in a queue. But sometimes thats just the way it is. Not just at railway stations, but in supermarkets, post offices, hell even at football games. Do they get the same grief, no they don't because the railway is an easy target because most people enjoy having a pop.

As has been said already, at a supermarket you can take your custom elsewhere. It is quite common for a kick off to be delayed if there are excessive queues to get into a match. Do train companies hold trains for passengers in this circumstance - do they hell, instead they accuse passengers of fare dodging and try and issue a penalty fare.

Just a suggestion here but if you are going to catch a train and you think the ticket office may be a little busy why not leave yourself a bit of extra time. Or is it because the GUIDELINES say 5 mins you think that is gospel and you will get away with it.

No problem with leaving a bit of extra time, if possible, but what if you do and still can't get served?
The documents I mention above may be guidelines/aims but what else have passengers got to go on?

Airlines make it clear that you must check in at least xx mins before your flight. However, I have never seen anyone turned away if they have joined the queue prior to the cutoff time but do not actually reach the front until after the deadline has passed. The equivalent on the railway would be, if you join the queue in line with the guidelines, but have not reached the front in time, you are allowed to pay on the train, or at the destination, without penalty.

Even if you can't buy a ticket at the station all you have to do is approach the guard and they will sell you one 99 times out of a 100.

Really ? Just to use two examples - First Capital Connect have no guards; South West Trains have many non-commercial guards. These two companies alone run many more than 1 train in 100.

In my experience that would apply to just about every side in the Premiership. When I went to the Emirates in 2009-10 some of the Arsenal fans were having a go at their players even though they were winning!! I'm told by an Arsenal supporting mate that the reason for this is the proliferation of glory hunters that follow the team and will except nothing less than glorious, attacking football at all times. For some of them winning is no longer enough. Crazy

One thing that annoyed me at Gobowen station last Saturday is that the announcements were in Welsh first and English second.
Gobowen despite the name is in Shropshire,England.
The local hospital also has English and Welsh on its signs, although the word 'Hospital' does not appear in Welsh!
There must be more people in that part of the country that speak Urdu,Gujarati or Polish as a first language than Welsh, and that would even apply if you crossed the nearby border.
Incidentally I once saw a police car in Northampton with 'Heddlu' on it.
Is this a Celtic conspiracy to spread their incomprehensible language to more civilised parts of the country?Smile

Gobowen has probably been invaded by the Welsh but no-one has noticed. Audlem has already been liberated, apparently the old farts of this Crewe suburb wanted out.

Can we get straight to the point here. They are the Northern Premier League, the Southern League and for the record, the Isthmian League. Everything else is incidental and should be ignored.
RIP Zamaretto? I don't think so.

The National Blood Service have seriously annoyed me, my appointment to give blood tomorrow has been canceled for the THIRD time because of staff shortages, the next available appointment is in three weeks time!

Afraid this is the sort of thing you will have to get used to now the Cameron/Clegg show is in town.

I agree about the Cameron/Clegg show but better not get political.

I finally managed to give blood today, nothing too it and very worthwhile, even get something to eat and drink afterwards and some lovely nurses to chat tooWink

Bloody HR Departments

Work wanted me to see a specialist for my leg problems through the BUPA cover I had through work.

After 4 consultations BUPA decided that it wasn't something they cover so I had to stop seeing the specialist.

HR said don't worry we'll still pay the specialists upto date. They clearly haven't as since November I've had 3 separate invoices from the specialists only to be told don't worry we will pay it every time.

Well they clearly haven't as this morning I received a letter from a debt recovery company. I have forwarded this to the HR department and advised the D.R.C. to contact HR direct in future but no doubt I will be inundated with letters and phone calls until the payment has been made.

White van drivers.

Especially those that try to ram themselves up your exhaust pipe (and no, that's not a sexual euphemism!) as happened to me yesterday.

Then again, it was probably my own fault for only doing 40mph on a 40mph road.

Not all road traffic laws do apply to cylclists, for example I don't have to tax, insure or have an MOT for my bicycle!
