Sunday 24th July

Mildenhall Fen Tigers 57 Hackney Hawks 35

Most interesting part of a one sided meeting was Heat 9 which ended with one rider! Len Silver got very upset with the Ref. and said he was going to put a complaint in!

NK Iversen was a class above anything the Moonraker Mob had to offer. Even though the scores we're tied with three heats to go you never quite felt they had enough to stop KLS winning for the second time this season at Blunsdon. Don Rogers from 'that' final in 1969 was a guest on the centre green so not sure what he's thinking of both the local footy and shale boys struggling Unsure

Tigers 64 Rye House 29

Rye House every bit as bad as the scoreline suggests. Frampton was the only visitor to offer any resistance. Match only memorable for a bizarre heat 6. Ricky Ashworth was off 15m after failing to beat the 2 minute rule. When they finally got away, Bowen fell on the first bend, on the second bend Skidmore fell, and Ashworth laid down his Bike to avoid Skidmore. Boxall then slowed down and eventually ground to a halt, the other 3 riders had remounted but were just coasting around until they realised that no red light had been put on.The race then "recommenced" resulting in a 5-1 to the Tigers and a winning time of 78 seconds, some 17 seconds slower than the other races.

Premier League : Leicester 45 Newport 45. Admission 15. Programme 2.50. Attendance about 1,300

Two of the bottom three in the league meant it was probably going to be close and it was with never more than 4 points in it and even that only happened once - after a horrific heat 5 crash caused by Russian wild-boy Bondarenko and ended up with his team mate Henning Bager on the terracing having been pinged over the air fence and track surrounds. Amazingly he got up for the re-run where he trailed third (then 13-17) and didn't appear again for the rest of the night. Leicester have signed Kauko Nieminen and Magnus Karlsson so are a little stronger but Newport's Charlie Gjedde dropped only one point all night, that in heat 15 when Leicester needed a 4-2 to tie it which they did in by far the best race of the night - many of the others being pedestrian.
Liked the stadium and it, and the track, will only get better. Meeting delayed till 8 to allow fans from the Leicester City-Real Madrid PSF to do both events, but I didn't see a single Real fan doing the double.

Since my last post have been to a number of meetings as follows :

14th June Isle of Wight 47 v 43 Hackney NL
18th June Eastbourne 50 v 40 Wolverhampton EL KOC
22nd June Poole 55 v 41 Swindon EL
26th June Rye House 54 v 39 Berwick PL
1st July Lakeside 48 v 41 Belle Vue EL
2nd July Hackney 59 v 35 Newport @ Rye House NL
15th July Hackney 54 v 41 Buxton @ Lakeside NL
18th July Eastbourne 22 v 14 Coventry EL Abandoned after 6 Heats Rain
22nd July Lakeside 40 v 38 Poole EL Abandoned after 13 Heats Rain
23rd July Newport 58 v 32 Ipswich PL
25th July Coventry 49 v 42 Poole EL
28th July Birmingham 43 v 49 Eastbourne EL
29th July Lakeside 55 v 41 Peterborough EL
30th July Eastbourne 59 v 34 Swindon EL

Crowds varied at all tracks from 200 to at Isle of Wight and Hackney Meetings to about 1750 at Poole and 1500 at Lakeside v Peterborough. Meetings at Newport, Coventry and Birminhgam were marred by injuries to riders. 2 Ipswich riders injured in same heat at Newport, 3 Poole riders were injured at Coventry and Lukas Dryml broke his thigh at Birmibgham when he hit another bike which acted as a ramp and sent him 15 feet in the air and approx 50 - 60 Metres lengthwise, he was lucky he only broke his thigh. And at Eastbourne, the Swindon Number 1 Scott Nicholls arrived early but his bikes only turned up about 15 minutes from the end and he only scored 5 points.
On Friday will be going to Scunthorpe v Ipswich in the PL, if this is rained off will go North Ferriby v Grimsby

Tuesday 2nd August

Dudley Heathens 38 Mildenhall Fen Tigers 51

Crowd - looked about 800-900

Admission 10 Programme 2 good!

Great night for the travelling band of Mildenhall supporters! I personally thought we'd loss this by 10-12 points, but wasn't banking on 15 year old sensation Cameron Heeps scoring a brilliant 20 (yes 20!) points from reserve Wink
He was only beaten the once by Tom Perry in heat 12, I can't remember seeing a better race for some time, absolute quality from the youngsters.

Good banter with the Dudley supporters and some excellent mushy peas and chips completed a pretty special evening.

The play offs look much more likely now, add a possible KO Cup final appearance and 2011 just keeps geting betterSly

Sat Aug 6th - Elite League : Lakeside Hammers 42 Coventry Bees 48. Admission 16; Programme 2.50. Att - TBBM said around 1,600

A rare Saturday meeting at Arena Essex gave an easy double after the earlier game at Takeley. We even had time to be refused admission to the Traitors Gate in Little Thurrock on the grounds that dwarfdwarf was just too small to gain entry (probably a good thing judging by the crew assembled out the front) so instead a GBG double in Grays at the White Hart and The Theobold Arms, situated about 5 mins walk from the station and on opposite sides of the road by Grays Wharf. 4 ales in each with the former very lively. I'm sure the stats of TOWIE were there, if only I could be bothered to watch it, but I wouldn't have wanted an argument with any of the females I saw in there.

Arena Essex occupies a big area just off M25 J30 but will win no prizes for aesthetic beauty. One large covered terrace on the near side and a couple of Takeley covers on the far side up against the perimeter fence comprise the cover, unless you count the balcony on the cafe/pub by the first bend which looked well populated. Having said that, it's well banked all round with good viewing from most areas, although you're some distance from the track as it's inside a banger-racing circuit.

Cracking meeting with both teams chasing the 4th and last play-off spot for the end of season Sky hype-fest. After Heat 5, Lakeside were 19-11 up and failed to gain another heat advantage all night as maximum man Eddie Kennett proved unstoppable. A brief delay for a squall after heat 7 - after that it was all Coventry and they should have taken all 4 points but for Rossiter not giving Pawlicki a run out in Heat 15 when he had scored 12 already and Sayfutdinov only 4+2. Sayfutdinov came last in that heat on a track that was much too tight for him.

Bit of a scandal this meeting now as according to an official satement on the BSPA Website the result has now been dcelared as a 42-30 win to Lakeside as Mr Maximum Kennett rode witha tampered Silencer and all his points have been deducted along 3 other points when Nick Morris used his bike. Kennett has been banned for 7 days pending an inquiry report indicates Coventry and Kennett have accepted findings bike was illegal. Will be intersting if Kennett knew he had an illegal bike.

ELITE LGE: POOLE PIRATES 48 BIRMINGHAM BRUMMIES 42

TKT: 16 PROG: 2.50 (60 pages) ATT: approx 2,000

Cracking meeting at Wimborne Road where to their credit the Brummies gave a far better account of themselves than expected versus the leaders. Pirates had a few gremlins on the bike front and never led the meeting till the eleventh heat before just taking the win. Mind you after last year coming top before the play offs means nought. Their Aussie Posse though are quite impressive when firing on all cylinders. One of the best tracks and facilities on the shale circuit and still fairly well supported.

Mildenhall v Stoke - National League - Sunday 14th August - Final score 49 - 43
Crowd 1000+
Admission 10.00 (kids free)

Mildenhall v Scinthorpe - National League - Sunday 21st August - Final score 47 - 43
Crowd 850+
Admission 10.00 (kids free)
Programme 1.50

Cracking good meeting v Stoke in front of a 1000+ crowd, and Mildenhall I felt unfortunate not to claim all three points.

Also last Sunday v Scunthorpe (21st August) was another cracker!! Crowd around the 850 for this one, and congratualtions to the promotion for the smart initiative of letting kids in for free for all three August meetings.

I didnt expect Mildenhall to get anything from this meeting to be honest. Scunthorpe at NL level are a fine side, and have produced some excellent young british riders in Irving, The Worrall Brothers and Birks, just a pity they don't see it through into their PL side, but things are rather do as I say not as I do at ScunthorpeShocked

Mildenhall were without new No 1 15 year old future star Cameron Heeps and Mark Baseby so had a guest in Ben Morley and Rider Replacement! But the five Fen Tigers pulled together and neither riders or a non show from Morley could stop them from winning by 4 points.

Both meetings were an excellent example of the quality speedway that can be seen at NL level, especially when a top track is prepared to race on, credit to trackamn Bob Ellis for thatSmile

Fri 2nd: ZUMMERZET REBELS 51 LEICESTER LIONS 43

TKT: 14 ATT: H/C 700 PROG: Free scorecard just 4 pages!

So the Rebels new signing from Worky, James Wright stole the show with some last to first overtaking. Lions though with a much changed line up put up a fight before not quite managing to get anything from the meeting. Decent crowd considering 'Eng-er-land' were on the box against Uncle Bulgaria and an enjoyable evenings shale action.

Went to Rye House 56 v 35 Plymouth Premier League Admission 16 Prog 2 Att 300 Approx

This meeting was postponed last week due to a bad weather forecast which was inaccurate and was run this week up against a Tottenham Home game. Those who stayed away missed little as Rye House beat their poor opponents, the best rider was Plymouth's Ben Barker who scored 13 for Plymouth.

Looks like there could be some progress with a new stadium for Reading after all. The developers of the casino/dogs/speedway venue were given a three year extension to the planning permission in mid-October and look set to proceed. No firm date set for work to start, so I hope this isn't another false dawn.

Not looking so good for Reading Speedway returning now with news that a rival casino been given the go ahead so complex which would of included casino, speedway and dogs now in doubt.

Which is a shame with the good feeling that must be in the town right now what with the football club reaching the Premiership.

Did we ever think it would come back, sadly in most cases if a club closes down it seems to be the end in most cases. Oxford are rumoured to come back every year but nothing happens Cradley are back but as a Junior side, but not at Cradley. Belle Vue are moving (again) hopefully it will happen and they survive Coventry have a wobble every year or two about folding Swindon may be moving, but will it happen or will houses just be built with no new stadium The list is endless. 28 meetings of Poole v Eastbourne for the Elite League may well be boring even for Sky.
