Re: [RowZ] 2011/2012 LFA Sunday Cup Draws [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

I agree with both of you I thoroughly enjoy playing teams from different leagues in cup competitions and I have no issues with travelling from one side of London to the other early on a sunday morning, I have never understood why some players are unwilling to do that. In fact when and if I become a manager I will enter as many worthwhile tournaments as possible i.e. FA Sunday cup, London cups etc. Looking at this years Junior cup RowZ you have a decent chance of a good run the teams I would say to look out for are :- Tristars and Deloitte (winners in 2010), Highgate Albion (always get to the latter stages), Greenhouse Bethwin (already discussed), the winners of PSG v Millwall Albion (both are usually pretty strong), Gaziantepsor (not a great footballing side but not easy to knock over), maybe Paul Birch (not sure how strong they are this year) as well obviously I don't know every single team in it but I would say these are probably the strongest teams in it. This is ironic for us as I recall several other good sides that aren't in it this year (Hackney Downs, Yalova(winners 2011), Red Star Camden) so we probably would have had our best shoot if we had entered.

Re: [darney] 2011/2012 LFA Sunday Cup Draws [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

I was curious to see whether the "new" Clapton Rangers team this year would have similar personnel to their past teams after they withdrew from last year's LFA Challenge Cup and Hackney and Leyton League after losing funding/sponsors. They played their first league game of the season yesterday, and I can report that they managed to re-sign some of their former players that helped them win the LFA Junior and Intermediate Cups in successive seasons.

Michael Filletti (ex Dagenham & Redbridge), Ben Gracey (Waltham Forest), Ade Cole (Cheshunt), the Shaun Wright Phillips clone: Bradley Drisdale (Broxbourne), and their prolific striker James Smith are all back in the squad. Not sure if they resigned Ashley Forbes-Taylor from New Salamis though.

Hughesvideo, your opponents Albion Manor got a narrow 1-0 victory. Like I said, I think your team has a good chance against a faded force.

Yes I noticed that result. However, after a good Pre-Season, we have only one point from our first three League matches.
On Sunday, we lost 3-0 Away to ASCO and they absolutely battered us. They only have one player under 6 foot tall. We didn't have any outfield players over 6 foot tall. You can probably guess what the game was like.
ASCO reached the Final of the Herts F.A. Sunday Intermediate Cup last season and they have key players back from injury this season and are now even stronger. Whether Albion Manor are as good as them I don't know, but at least we are at Home on a decent pitch where we can get the ball down and play. ASCO's pitch in Hoddesdon was absolutely atrocious, so the game was all about who was the most adept at set-pieces, which therefore gave us no chance against their height and strength.

As usual, the London F.A. are a bit late with getting results from the First Round of the LFA Sunday Intermediate Cup online.
I know that Middlesbrough Supporters, Bari, Apoel, Bullers and ADF Machico all won on Sunday, but does anybody know any of the other results ? Particularly Athletico Annies v. East London (both possible opponents for us in the Third Round) and Yalova v. Enfield Crusaders ?
I know Enfield Crusaders are in the same League as us but LFA Cup results don't appear on our League's Full-Time website and neither do they on the Turkish Football Federation website.

Thanks Darney. There's a report on that match here on Yalova's website.

Here's a few recent results in common that do not bode too well for my team if we go on to meet Yalova in the LFA Sunday Intermediate Cup this season:
Edmonton Rovers 0 Inter Trac 3 (Pre-Season Friendly - 7.8.11)
You Tube Highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CD6bD-2q_R8
Inter Trac 1 Yalova 3 (Pre-Season Friendly - 19.8.11)
Enfield Crusaders 2 ASCO 1 (Waltham Sunday League Division One - 4.9.11)
ASCO 3 Edmonton Rovers 0 (Waltham Sunday League Division One - 18.9.11)
You Tube Highlights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lbR1c966P4
Yalova 2 Enfield Crusaders 1 (London FA Sunday Intermediate Cup - 18.9.11)

Hughes, Yalova without doubt are a top team, but I wouldn't be fooled too much with the result against ourselves as in this particular game we outplayed them for the majority of the match and they didn't create many chances.

The game was 1-1 up until the final 5 minutes and as it was a pre-season friendly we gave a few trialists some minutes and in the end those players weren't as good as our first teamers and they scored 2 goals late on but in a competitive game we would never have made those changes.

I would also note, Yalova FC when they did play us were missing 2 of their main players from last season, a striker called Adrian (unsure of his surname) and a skillful winger both those players were top players capable who I'm sure would improve the side we played against.

I'd say a game between Yalova and Edmonton Rovers wouldn't be as straight forward as it may seem, but you're team will have to cut out the mistakes at the back. As from watching your highlights and from your game against ourselves I'd say your biggest achillies heel is random defensive mistakes and again mistakes while trying to play football from the back.

Good Luck for the season anyway

Yes, that is indeed a problem for us at the moment as we have a lot of new players who are not used to the way we play.
We lost 5-3 yesterday, albeit to Flamstead End, who are probably the best team in our division, but I'm confident we will have a few wins under our belt by the time we play Albion Manor in November.

I forgot to mention in my last post that I would certainly have your team Inter Trac and your League Cup Final opponents Beresford United down as two of the favourites for the LFA Sunday Junior Cup this season, although maybe your 3-0 win in the Pre-Season Friendly against us did flatter you slightly !? Wink It was quite a close game but your finishing was better than ours, especially the midfielder with the very good left foot.

Do you think those two teams are that strong Hughesie? If so and Inter Trac are the best team in your league why do you think that they never entered the Intermediate LFA cup or was it down to the LFA as discussed previously on this board?

In regard to the previous comments about the Sunday Challenge cup being particularly strong this year I would like to stick my neck out and put Lambeth Allstars as a team that may well be a contender.

Inter Trac (and Beresford United) are in the North London Sunday League.
Edmonton Rovers are in the Waltham Sunday League.

The Waltham Sunday League is acknowledged as being a stronger League than the North London Sunday, which is why teams from the Premier (i.e. Continental) go in the Challenge Cup and Division One teams (i.e. orselves and Enfield Crusaders) go in the Intermediate Cup, but North London Sunday League teams go in the Junior Cup.
Inter Trac, Beresford United, K & M Motors and FC Marcelona are all definitely Division One Waltham Sunday League-standard though, and maybe one or two others, but it is probably a League recommendation that those teams go in the LFA Sunday Junior Cup because they only have one division whereas the Waltham Sunday has five.

By the way, it's a good job that FC Alpha have chosen not to enter the LFA Sunday Intermediate Cup judging by their 6-1 win against ASCO yesterday. That is an incredible result after the way ASCO played against us last week !

We are playing them in a League Cup match on the 16th October, so I'll try and find out then.
It's probably just the same as most of the Hackney & Leyton Sunday League teams where they just don't bother because it is not compulsory to enter Sunday Cup competitions if you are London F.A.-affiliated and they don't fancy the travelling ?

Hughesvideo - another encouraging result for you guys. Albion Manor lost 2-3 yesterday.

*Darney, what can you tell us about Lambeth All Stars? I think they play in the same league as The Lounge and Hazelhurst (Morden & District). Any other insight on them? Are they really in the same league as the Challenge Cup giants like New Salamis, Baldon, Clapton Rangers, Aris etc?

*I feel sorry for Kensington Athletic who face Lapton in the Intermediate Cup. Lapton won their first 2 games of the season 9-2 and 11-1. Scary when you think they are in the Prem and in decline.

*Clapton Rangers have indeed resigned striker Ashley Forbes-Taylor from New Salamis. Will be interesting for him if both teams get drawn against each in the Challenge Cup!

Yes they are in the same league as Hazlehurst and The Lounge and they beat Hazlehurst on sunday 3-2 with a last minute winner which they deserved, they have several Conference South players (sorry don't know any names) and were quite impressive with very intelligent midfield and foward players. I don't know if they are as good as any of the teams you mention as I have only seen Aris play and I would say that they are as good as them, so I am sticking my neck out and saying that if they play the side they had on sunday they could well be a dark horse in the Chalallenge cup!

Thanks for the info Darney. Good to see there is a potential dark horse out there that can challenge New Salamis' dominance. 3 Challenge Cup wins in 4 years for New Salamis is a bit much! That said, I can't see New Salamis retaining the cup this year. There are far too many good teams in it this year.

In the first round of the Challenge Cup, Clapton Rangers of the Hackney and Leyton League won 4-2 against Valtaro Wasteels of the Orpingtom and Bromley League (the league that Baldon play in). Interestingly, Valtaro played last season in the Sporstmans League where last year's beaten Challenge Cup finalists Pearscroft United also play in.
Does anyone know the other results?

Clapton will probably play North London Olympians next in what should be an early clash of two of the favourites. I recommend that game to anyone who is free to go and watch.

I had a trawl around some League websites last night and found:
Redbridge Jewish Care 0 Brixton United 5 (Bit of a shock, that one ! I thought the Maccabi League was supposed to be quite strong.)
Greengate 3 F.C. Bickley 1

I don't think FC Tripimeni v. Caribb Club was played for some reason.

New Salamis certainly aren't unbeatable, Pearscroft (who were down to ten men for more than half the game) pushed them all the way in last seasons final, the winner coming in stoppage time.

Theoretically speaking, would Edmonton Rovers be good enough to compete at Step 7 of the National League System? Apologies, my knowledge of Sunday League Football is non existent.

In terms of our current squad and playing ability, I would say yes. The same goes for most other teams in Division One of the Waltham Sunday League.
Two of our current players play for Wormley Rovers on Saturday in the Premier Division of the Herts Senior County League on Saturdays, which is Step 7, and they are by no means our best players. If our current side played in the Premier Division of the Herts Senior County League on Saturdays, we would probably finish just below mid-table.
The top team in our division, Flamstead End, have several players who also play for Wormley Rovers on Saturdays, but only to help them out when they are short. They actually treat Sunday football as more important and a better standard, as do a lot of our players who have previously played for Step 5-7 clubs.

I have been saying for several years now that the standard of Sunday League football in the better Leagues and the top divisions is seriously underestimated. More and more Step 5-7 players are giving up playing on Saturdays at that level when they are in their mid/late-20's and in their prime because of their increasingly hectic lifestyles that do not allow them to train or to travel to midweek matches. They then start playing Sunday football instead.
The problem is that a lot of Sunday League clubs are not run very well because 'nobody' wants to be the club Secretary. They may have good players, but fold up because of poor administration. That rarely happens in the Pyramid on Saturdays.

I have been running Edmonton Rovers for 35 years now, and I have often been asked about us turning to Saturday football and joining the Pyramid...in our case in the Middlesex County League or Spartan South Midlands League Division Two.
Since the demise of the old Edmonton F.C. (Athenian League) back in the early-70's and the once-splendid Henry Barrass Stadium being more-or-less demolished and turned into pretty much a park pitch during the last couple of decades, I have always thought about doing it should myself or one of our club members win the lottery or get some sort of major sponsorship deal on the back of us professionally filming all our matches and therefore be able to find a suitable ground (or redevelop the Barrass if Enfield Council allowed it).
However, it is very much the administrative, legal & financial side of things in running a Non-League Pyramid club that will always put me off I'm afraid. In Sunday League football, there are still things we can aim for such as winning the Premier Division of our League or a County Cup Final, or competing in the F.A. National Sunday Cup. That'll do me. Smile

Re: [HughesVideo] 2011/2012 LFA Sunday Cup Draws [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Hughesvideo, I think you were actually modest in your appraisal of Sunday football standard. I think many Prem teams in Sunday Leagues have players at higher levels than Step 7.

London Harrier, as I mentioned on another thread: I watched Baldon Sports play a semi-final a few days after seeing one of their players (who also plays in the CONFERENCE) giving a casual interview to BBC TV after he scored a goal in the 1st or 2nd round of THE FA CUP - PROPER! Two of their players that day play in the Conference South, and most of the others play at Isthmian/County level (including one who played for the Republic of Ireland at youth level). In terms of PLAY, many Sunday Prem teams are fielding players at steps 4-5. As Hughesvideo said, the difference is that Saturday Leagues are better organised (programmes, admin etc).

London Harrier, please feel free to read the earlier posts on this thread which has incredibly detailed info on the players of Sunday teams who also play for Isthmian/Conference teams in the pyramid on Saturdays.

FA National Sunday Cup - 1st Round Results [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Seems that most of the London clubs successfully navigated the first round of the FA (national) Sunday Cup yesterday. Most got through quite comfortably. Best reuslts for me were Hazelhurst's 8-0 victory and Greengate beating a good Belstone team 3-0 away:

Bari 1 -v- New Salamis 3 (KOPA League)
16/10/2011 at Clapton FC

FC Tripimeni Aris 4 (KOPA League) -v- 1 Upshire
16/10/2011 at Cockfosters FC

Sungate 3 (Essex Sunday Corinthian League) -v- 0 Hammer OGB
16/10/2011 at Barking

FC Belstone 0 -v- 3 Greengate (Essex Sunday Corinthian League) 16/10/2011 at The Medburn Ground, Radlett

Hazelhurst 8 (Morden and District League) -v- 0 Ajax LA
16/10/2011 at Carshalton Athletic FC

The Lounge 3 (Morden and District League) -v- 1 Knighton Arms
16/10/2011 at Banstead Athletic FC

Falcons 12 -v- London Maccabi Lions 1 (Maccabi Jewish League)
16/10/2011 at Newmarket Town FC

Elm Farm 7 -v- 4 North London Olympians (Hendon and District League)
16/10/2011 at Aylesbury FC

Royal Falcons 1
(Essex Sunday Corinthian League) -v- 3 Comets Sports Club
16/10/2011 at Bovingdon FC, Green Lane, Bovingdon

Barnes Albion 2 -v- 1 AFC Kumazi Strikers (Metropolitan League)

16/10/2011 at Cockfosters FC

Very disappointed with our League representatives Upshire's showing here. I expected them to do better than that, especially after beating Enfield Rangers 7-0 and Continental 8-0 in League matches recently. Shocked
I can only assume they are now starting to get injuries or maybe players put on contract for Saturday clubs as they lost 4-2 to Lea Valley Royals the week before. I would still expect them to win the Waltham Sunday League Premier Division again this season though. They are well clear at the top at the moment.
Did anybody go to watch the match ?

As for the London F.A. Sunday Intermediate Cup First Round yesterday...
Koture 1 Southbank 0
Cool Oak Rangers 2 Danson Albion 5
Brotherhood 3 Caribb Club Reserves 4
Cetinkaya Cinar 1 Turkmenkoy Aydin Spor 2
Wig Army 3 Lsportc 4
Lapton 11 Kensington Athletic 2
EIC (Edmonton Islamic Centre ?) 2 Faithfold 4
Hoops 2 Phoenix 9
Sporting Santos 7 Salaam Peace 1

The predictable 'massacre' by Lapton then. I really cannot understand why Kensington Athletic don't go in the Junior Cup. What is the point of getting hammered like that in the First Round of the Intermediate every year ? Seems a strange one to me.
That Phoenix result is very impressive. They have got to be one of the favourites I would have thought ?
Brotherhood losing is a bit of a shock. Cetinkaya Cinar are currently bottom of the KOPA League table and have lost players to Saturday football. (Mainly Goffs Oak in the Herts Senior County League I think ?) Losing to a team in the Turkish Community Federation is no real surprise.
I don't know much about the other winners.

Lapton's results this season: 9-2, 11-1, 3-0, and 11-2. They have scored 34 goals in their first 4 games of the season! Shocked Maybe they are trying to prove a point to me after I said they have aged and are in decline! Laugh

You would think that by now, Kensington Athletic would have realised that the Intermediate Cup is too strong for them, and they might do better in the Junior Cup.

I think Yalova (after walking to victory in the Junior Cup last year) will be hard to stop in the Intermediate Cup.

In the National Cup, I was surprised at London Maccabi Lions of the Maccabi Jewish League being destroyed 12-1. Speaking of which, Edmonton Islamic Centre v Faithfold (of the Maccabi Jewish League) must have been a tense game! ...

Yes I think you might be right about Yalova. I might get some idea of how strong they are in a couple of weeks' time though when we play Enfield Crusaders in a League match. They only lost 2-1 to Yalova in the First Round and I think it was a pretty close game.
Enfield Crusaders recently drew 1-1 with F.C. Alpha, who in my opinion are the best team in our League at the moment...Premier Division included. As I previously mentioned, F.C. Alpha do not enter the London F.A. Sunday Cups for some reason.
We played them yesterday and produced one of our best performances for ages by taking them to Extra Time in a League Senior Cup match before losing 1-0. If we play like that against Albion Manor, then I think we will have a chance of getting through to the Third Round. Unfortunately though, we have one or two key players unavailable for that game and we will have to hope the weather turns nasty and it gets postponed a week ! Wink

I would like to think the standard is all pretty close between about 10-12 of the obvious better teams in the Sunday Intermediate Cup this season though.

Interesting point about that Edmonton Islamic Centre v. Faithfold match. That fixture would probably never happen in professional football, but in Sunday football, cultural, religious and political differences thankfully get put aside. There have been many fixtures crop up like that in the London Sunday Cups over the years and I have never heard of anything 'kicking off' in any of them. I think it's great to see and long may it continue.
