Flapping Tracks Can't Post or Reply Privately

On the recent BBC4 documentary about the flapping track (non-NGRC greyhound) at Highgate in South Yorks it mentioned there were only 11 tracks left. Does anyone know the names and locations of the others?

John. The Fanny-on-the-Hill is in Welling which I believe is still classified as Kent. The track is now an open space frequented by youths who have hoods over their heads, even when it's baking hot.

Thank you Rupert, Welling is indeed Kent, I did not have an exact location

A list of independent greyhound tracks can be found at

http://independent-racing.co.uk/track_locations.php

There are 17 aligned to the Independent Greyhound Racing Association.

One I can add to that list is Thornton in Fife, a track a few miles down the road from me.

As far as 'flapping' horse racing is concerned there are a few tracks in Scotland, notably Langholm and Hawick. The overhead photo of the track at Hawick Moor shows a 'proper track' with permanent rails. In addition there are meetings this year at Selkirk and Irvine (presumably the old Bogside racecourse though I can't be 100% sure).

http://www.langholmhorseracing.co.uk/

Any horses found to have competed at flapping tracks are banned for life from 'mainstream' horse racing.

I followed a horse called Chestnut Charlie a couple of years ago after a promising 'debut' at Kelso. He was an easy winner of a couple of races in Ireland before it was found he'd previously 'been flapping' and hence was disqualified from his runs under Rules and is now banned. A great shame since he was a horse with a promising future.

Interesting that link Rob as it gives 17 sites, whereas recent TV programme said only 12 still exist.

Glastonbury (see below) seems to be one of 5 recent closures (at Football Ground!) only 5 months after re-starting.

Also interesting that an unofficial greyhound track operates within an official horse track (at Newton Abbot)

Supporters of Avon & Somerset Greyhound Action (ASGA) who had gathered for a demonstration outside the Salisbury offices of Peter Toogood, owner of Glastonbury's Abbey Moor Stadium, on Monday, March 6th, were met by Mr Toogood, who told them "you've won, it's over, I'm giving up".

He then went into his offices and came out a few minutes later with the following written statement:-

"This is to officially confirm that I have today telephoned the greyhound operators and advised them that due to more vandalism which is also putting the football club in jeopardy there will be no more greyhound racing at Abbey Moor Stadium Glastonbury."

Toogood was referring to yet another attack on the stadium by the Animal Liberation Front, which was reported on the Western Animal Rights Network website as follows:

3/2/06 Greyhound Race Track visited by the ALF
Glastonbury track targeted for the third time.

Re: [John Treleven] Flapping Tracks [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

There's a website called Flappers Dream. Their message board lists discussions for 12 English and Scottish tracks and 3 Welsh ones. I presume these are the tracks still operating.

Armadale
Askern
Ayr
Corbiewood
Easington
Ellesmere Port
Gretna
Highgate
Thornton
Wansbeck
Westhoughton
Wheatley Hill

Bedwelty
Swansea
The Valley

Scotland has 5 flapping tracks, but now only the one NGRC track at Shawfield.

Unfortunately greyhound racing has lapsed into 'betting shop fodder' in many areas. The tracks in built up areas, particularly London, are now disappearing as the land gets sold for property development. London has seen the likes of Harringay, Hackney, Catford, Wembley and White City disappear in the last 20-odd years and many others before that. Walthamstow is soon to join them, though I understand Harlow is being set up to take Walthamstow's place as a premier track.

To answer the old query on here, the frotnage of Walthamstow Stadium is listed, so cannot be knocked down.

I'm not sure, as I don't go over that way often, but I think the stadium still stands, housing not been built on it yet. Maybe a 'local' from over there can clarify?

Not a local but seeing this thread bumped reminded me that I heard something about Walthamstow recently. Boris didn't call in the planned development for further scrutiny which was thought to be the final hope for keeping the stadium, but it seems to be more complicated than that with questions being raised about the whole award process.
