"The FA confirmed that the result means the team finishing sixth in the Premier League will earn a Europa League place"

Is this sloppy journalism, sloppy wording by the Football Association, or is it me being sloppy?

If Everton finish sixth, Chelsea seventh and Liverpool eighth then Everton won't qualify for the Europa League.

It is either poor journalism, or a poor FA statement.
However, under the finishing order you give, Everton qualify for the Europa League is Liverpool win the cup, (but not if Chelsea do).

Not exactly from a sports presenter, but I once caught an episode of University Challenge where, after a question related to Scottish football:

Student: Is it Dundee?
Paxman: Yes that's right, Dundee United...

Extra point on that Everton won't qualify if Chelsea win the Champions League final no matter who wins the FA Cup. England will have only 4 Champions League places, so if Chelsea win the Champions League they and only the top 3 go into the champions league with the 4th Place team going into the Europa League.

I understand an extra place will then be allocated to England's UEFA cup contingent. At least it spares us the mockery of surprisingly being allocated that place through "fair play".........again........

No the extra place is only awarded when a holder enters European competition and does not qualify at all for Europe through their league. It was therefore a possibility when Chelsea finishing 7th (or lower) was possible, but no longer applies.

Two on Talk Sport over the weekend:

"The players must pick their heads up off the floor quickly"
and, admittedly not football related :

"The 10 shilling note was withdrawn in 1969 and replaced by the 50 pence piece"

What's wrong with that, or should I go to bed instead of Wembley?

Careful Don, the Vet has moved to the 'Dark Side' and his mind works in strange ways.
Perhaps a 50p coin is replacing 120 pence ?
Or perhaps the date should be 15th Feb , 1971.
I am sure the Vet look's in occasionally and will explain.
Just p off to Wembley.

One from Kentishfootball about last weekend's Dartford v Welling match being Kent's biggest ever derby. Obviously Boxing Day 1989 didn't exist or perhaps the writer is a Gills fan!

So far from the Euro 2012

1. Mark Bright's comment nearing the end of The Poland v Greece game stating that the Russians and Czech Republic teams will be watching the game at the moment with their feet up at the hotel somewhere. Me thinks not, as they would have been at The Wroclaw stadium at that time probably warming up.

2. Alan Hansen's initial four semi final predictions of Germany, Netherlands, Portugal & Spain which just isn't going to happen

I was wondering about the thought processes of the presenting team when they were discussing the merits or otherwise of England staying in a city centre base in Krakow. "It will be good to be close to and in amongst the fans". Err, whose fans? It's rather a hike from Krakow to Donetsk............

As the camera focused on a celebrating Russian fan. '900 miles from Moscow and 900 miles back again - well worth it'

Presumably then, all England fans have travelled from London and all Irish fans from Dublin.

As I refuse to watch any football which is summarised by that complete bastard Andy Townsend, can somebody update me?....is he still pluralising the goal , as in "He was just wide of the goals with that effort"...?

Whilst I have no time for Andy Townsend as a summariser I have never had any reason to consider that he is a complete, or even a partial, bastard. Could you illuminate me?
