After a 5-0 hammering by Celtic, Newco manager Graeme Murty stayed on as manager throughout Monday - to a lot of people's surprise.
This has now been changed https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/43961178

After Steve Gerrard posted all over the sports pages stating that the managers job his is if he wants it must have been a bit of a clue for Murty that his time was up.

Gerrard was a player that always gave 100% for 90+ minutes but managing a club like Rangers for a first job he might find a bit too much for him with his lack of managerial experience.

The last thing Rangers need is an unproven manager like Gerrard.

I wonder if Steve Clarke would be interested.

But they dinnae want him 'cos he's got an e on the end of his name. Must be a kafflik.

Scotland - best small-minded country in the world.

Smaller minded than Northern Ireland? Shocked

Edit: Just reread the best bit Cool

Although I am hardly a Rangers fan these days, they don't speak for me, or many of my colleagues.
The Rangers and Celtic boards, whilst not exclusively so, tend to be repositories of madness. Do they know that StevieG, while not of that persuasion, chose to go to a Catholic school because they had a better football team?

Precisely.

Most Rangers supporters do not seem to realise that Stevie G is just a device to sell season tickets. The club have to raise large sums of money by the end of June to stave off another Administration. By October, after another defeat to Celtic or Hibs, they'll be calling for his head and claiming that he was never the man for the job.

Steve Clarke or Gordon Strachan would be far better appointments for Rangers than Gerrard.

After many years of being a season ticket holder I gave up on senior Scottish football in 2009, although I still keep an interest in Rangers' results. However, I derive much greater satisfaction when visiting a new ground, like Bridge of Earn.

Clarke has been impressive but I don't know if he would have the authority to sort out the utter mess that is the Ibrox dressing room, and then there is the board to contend with, and it is as big a mess and culpable for the poor appointments so far. Strachan would be a left field appointment that would send the halfwits among both supports into meltdown, but would he want it? I don't think I would touch it if I was in his shoes.

Anyway, back to my plans for the next few weeks, none of which involve "big" teams.

It's taken almost 18 months - but at last an appointment that can displace the decision in B9 to appoint Zola as the worst imaginable terms of suitability for the job, relevant experience, and certainty of failure.

That has long been displaced. I confidently predict that Gerrard will oversee more victories at Rangers than Pardew did at the Albion.

I'll take you up on that implied challenge and enquire who you think are the managers who were more unsuitable than Zola on the criteria I named.

Pardew might well be crap but at least he had experience of managing teams full of honest clodhoppers like WBA and didn't expect them to start playing sexy football one week then berate them for letting in soft goals the next.

Sure Gerrard might get more wins than Pardew - given the money and talent in his squad and the also ran nature of half of the Scots Prem, Uncle Tom Cobbley could get a 50% win record there

If you think the Albion squad is full of "clodhoppers" so be it, but I cannot take your views seriously in that case.

While Gerrard's appointment is a risk (for both parties) I'd hardly describe his appointment as the "worst imagineable" in terms of "certainty of failure". I've never been Gerrard's biggest fan but he's got far more about him than John Barnes and Gary Neville, for example, who both got parachuted into big jobs way beyond their ability. I doubt he'll overtake Celtic, certainly so long as Rodgers is there, so I'm sure some will regard that alone as failure. But there are far worse candidates than Gerrard out there, and I fancy he'll prove to be an upgrade on the likes of Warburton, Caixinha and Murty.

Re: [paulh66] THE Rangers FC [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Apologies Paul and Mick for my tardy reply...I'm an irregular visitor here.

re "clodhoppers"...an attempt at an affectionate-ish put down of local rivals. My apologies if that irritated, but I don't think that invalidated the point : viz Pardew wasn't very effective, but at least no Albion fan could claim that he'd never vaguely successfully managed a squad of similar talent (or otherwise) before

re upgrade on Warburton...we'll have to agree to disagree then that a bloke with no managerial experience at all is an upgrade on one with a half way decent record with players of the quality that Rangers currently possess.

The appointment just screams to me of desperately reaching out for someone who looks good to impress the fans rather than actually thinking it through to get someone who could actually achieve with what he had at his disposal. Thus entirely like Blues' then new owners and Zola.

To me it's a job perfectly suited to big Sam.

But I appreciate that the fire has gone out of this discussion, and ultimately we'll have to see what transpires on the pitch...just didn't want you to think I'd ignored your comments.

That's not the criterion by which success is measured at Rangers, though. They have to be better than Celtic. Or at least competitive with them.
