A long shot perhaps but hopefully Argentina will stop moaning about the Falklands now that they have one of their sons as the Pope.

His election may have caused some unease in Argentina.

Firstly, the country is in a four-day mourning period following
the death of Hugo Chavez - really?

So do the populous forget this and celebrate their country's first pope?

Also, one wonders what their [Argentian's] response will be to the Falklands now?

16oz steaks and A-level guilt all round!

Incidentally, has no one else noticed that much of the talk about the papacy of der Unterstumbahnfuhrer... sorry, Herr Ratzinger... was about how at the age of 78 when elected, he was just too old to undertake reforms of the Catholic Church?

Well, they've really dealt with that issue now, what with electing a 76 year old. That'll really make a difference.

Didn't go down the bookies, but did anyone have any money on young Frank getting the nod? I didn't see the odds, but I reckon a pony on him would have brought in a nice little earner. Never seemed to have been mentioned amongst the early favourites among the runners and riders.

Regarding the Falklands: well I reckon this may well have trumped their referendum. Expect the full force of a papal encyclical soon ("De Insulas Malvinas" or something similar).

He could excommunicate the whole of the UK if we don't give the Falklands back and if Michael Owen doesn't do 30 days penance for his dive in the 2002 World Cup.
Not that I would give a toss.

He could only excommunicate the minority of the UK population who are members of the club.

Presumably being an Argentinian he only got the job by the hand of God, and being in the Vatican he will be able to see plenty of images of the Maradona Madonna.

As part of the EU don't the rest of Europe come to our aid or doesn't it work like that?

Crazy I don't think there'd be any chance of military support from members of the EU to help GB hanging on to what many in Europe would see as a colonial relic of empire. However, in 1982 the European Community supported the call for Argie withdrawal and implemented sanctions against them on their refusal. Nowadays I'd expect the EU to condemn an invasion and again apply sanctions. Military defence would be up to us. Spain, with their claim to Gibraltar, would certainly lend no support.

When the chips were down in 1982, the French provided solid support. At that time aircraft and missiles of French origin formed crucial parts of the Argentine equipment, so President Mitterand provided assistance including aircraft for GB pilots to train against. As for Uncle Sam.....we'd find out just what support being their bestest, bestest friends in Iraq/Afghanistan etc had earned us.

Of course, by the time the Argies do come calling again, if the SNP have won north of the border, they could be taking on Little rather than Great Britain. Tongue

Are you worried that they might re-settle the islands and forcibly remove all the people who'd lived there for generations? Not unlike the Chagossians of Diego Garcia who still aren't allowed home; nice story about how the dogs were rounded up there, don't you think?

I agree that what happened to the Chagossians was disgraceful. But forcing the Falkland Islanders to move wouldn't make it right. Surely this is about self determination. Which is why, in the event that Scotland vote for independence in any referendum, I'd have to problem with letting them go.

The same goes for Gibraltar. If the people living there decide to go with Spain so be it.
