Odd pub names... Can't Post or Reply Privately

..I am talking old style boozers not the modern Slug and Lettuce thingies...

Some of course have names that are local connections which are lost to the outside
world but here's a few I know of to get you started.

Kicking Dicky - Dunmow way
Devon Dumpling - Torquay
Ship & Turtle - London, EC2
The Astric Lodge - Stepney, London's east end.
Buck i' the Vine - Ormskirk
The Catcracker - Stanford le Hope

...knock yourselves out....

The Bunkers Knob was a classic, in New Addington near Croydon although its since been renamed.

There is the Thirsty Pig in Maidstone and its close proximity to the police station results in a few wisecracks.

Hate stupid modern 'humorous' names when given to old pubs (though I accept that names have changed over the centuries) but they're entirely appropriate for some of the newer 'establishments'. What's more puzzling is how some pubs came by their names; weighty books have been written on the subject. Why do inland locations have 'Ship' inns? Bedford has two, and there's another fine example in the village of Wincle near Macc (haven't been there for a while, though).

Went in a pub few years back called The Pig Sty at Touchens Green between Bracknell and Maidenhead, Disco going on Midweek, Looking at the local females in attendance pub was aptly named. Changed its name to `Winagins` before reverting back to a house with the same name on the junction of Maidenhead Road/Paley Street. Loved Uncle Toms Cabin in Wincanton.

I don't know if it's still there but when I worked at the Greenwich Naval College in the early 90's I passed the

on Trafalgar Road twice a day. There are also several

"The Case is Altered"

in the NW Middlesex area.

Some near me:
Success to the Plough! in Rochdale
The Romper in Ringway (originally the Red Lion, but the artwork on the pub sign was so poor people said the lion looked more like a romping donkey)
Crown and Kettle in Manchester
The Emigration in landlocked Offerton, Stockport (although some County fans may be contemplating emigration now).

Two of my absolute favourites for quality unusual names for pubs are "Dirty Dicks" (Halifax) and "My Father's Moustache" (Louth). Never seen a name like them on any other pub!

There's a pub of the same name just along from Liverpool Street rail station.

Also in Portsmouth:

Fifth Hampshire Voluteers
The Baffins
The Electric Arms
The Invincible

A couple of original names from long-closed pubs in Portsmouth would include 'The Pompey' (outside Fratton Park, later becoming the club shop and ticket office), and 'The Mystery' which is a beautiful 'witches hat' building down among the towerblocks of Somerstown.

The longest (historic) pub name in UK is The Old 13th Cheshire Volunteer Rifleman Corps Inn in Stalybridge. Coincidentally, Stallybridge also has a pub called The Q which claims to have the shortest name of any pub in UK.

I visited both these pubs on a night out in Stalybridge back in 2004, following Bolton v Pompey, and thought it a great town for a pub crawl. I was told that these were the historic names of the pubs, and not jokey names made up by some marketing twat solely to be the country's longest or shortest pub names.
