Les Revenants (The Returned) Can't Post or Reply Privately

I know one or two on here have been following this French series on C4 which comes to an end tonight - I was going to say reaches its climax but, being French, that occurs regularly in most episodes Tongue

I'd very rarely make an effort to watch a sub-titled programme but the writing and pace of this programme has been exceptional and it's been a riveting watch with suitably moody music from the always-interesting Scottish outfit Mogwai.

Qu'en pensez-vous?

Magnifique, mais je n'ai pas la moindre idée de ce qui se passe. Chapeau à Mogwai.

Talking French subtitled fare, I've been watching 'Hard', a comedy.

http://skyarts.sky.com/...isode-1-comfort-zone

Natacha Lindinger stars in Cathy Verney's comedy-drama which follows a French housewife's reluctant move into the adult film business when her husband suddenly dies
Natacha Lindinger stars as middle-class Catholic housewife Sophie, who learns following her husband's sudden death that he had been lying to her about his job for 16 years. She discovers that, instead of working in computing as she had believed, he had remortgaged their house against his own X-rated film company and had been financing their affluent lifestyle with the profit from his porn movies.

Desperate to keep up with the mortgage repayments, prudish Sophie finds she has no choice but to take over as producer and throws herself into a macho universe that simultaneously intrigues and repulses her. Humour arises as she battles to balance the bright lights and brazen characters of the studio with the quiet comfort of her home life, teenage children and well-to-do friends.

Against the unlikely backdrop of the studio, she meets leading porn actor Roy. Torn between her attraction to him and her duty to mourn her husband, she forms an ambivalent relationship with the aspiring comedian, soon learning that he is as pigeonholed by his choice of profession as she is by her class.

A clever and witty manipulation of stereotypes, this six- part series written and directed by Cathy Verney is the story of a woman hurled out of her comfort zone.

I've thoroughly enjoyed this series so far and thoroughly recommend watching.

Professional cretin.

Mrs Part-Timer has become addicted to this, much to my surprise. She hates sub-titles. On the plus side having to read them means that she has to concentrate all the time which prevents her falling asleep and then asking me what happened at the end of the programme, as is her normal practice.

Part-laziness and I guess part of the "arrogance" (maybe not the right word but you know what I mean) of the English-speakers who generally don't make much of an effort when it comes to languages. I know, I'm ashamed to admit it.........for that reason we don't get that many foreign programmes here, certainly not at peak viewing time so it was a brave gamble by Channel 4 that appears to be paying off.
I know what you're going to say.......and I must get round to watching The Killing which got rave reviews over here (and not the US version!) which was one of those programmes where I wasn't "in" at the start and felt I would have missed the point by not seeing the whole series. Apparently not the case.....Crazy
I see that Paul Abbott (of Shameless fame) will be producing an English version of Les Revenants; I doubt it will have the beauty, understated menace and subtle subtexts that the Canal + version had, which I gather was the most expensive show they've ever attempted?

No Tongue. I've seen one episode of The Killing - at a B&B in Worcester. I've watched more episodes of Borgen/The Castle (don't know if it's called one or the other in UK) which I quite liked. That one is recommended - and Sidse Babett Knudsen is hot Wink.

I do think watching English-language programmes with Danish subtitles has helped considably in learning English.

Spiral was the other good one, gets repeated every so often. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spiral_(TV_series) That said I've only ever got round to watching Series 1!

Why do they do things like this? It'll be the equivalent of the US version of The Office.

No one can match the style of French productions.

Birgitte Hjort Sorensen aka Katrine Fonsmark is hotter in my opinion, in fact I'd go as far to say she's been the most beautiful girl on tv over the past year Wink Watched three episodes of series 3 in Stockholm earlier in the year and shock horror, there was no sign of Kasper - will have to wait until the autumn to find out what's going on there....I liked the Killing a lot but Borgen is definitely my fave Scandi-export. Les Revenants was good too and I agree the Mogwai soundtrack added a mood which lifted it above the usual zombie fare.
