Rugby League 2015 fixtures Can't Post or Reply Privately

The fixtures were released a few days ago, and it may be of interest to some that both Rochdale and Barrow are experimenting with Saturday evening games. Rochdale have four home games with scheduled 5.30pm kick offs on Saturdays, whilst Barrow are playing the majority of their home games on Saturday evenings, with ten games kicking off at 6.30pm.

Both should offer plenty of opportunity for doubles, either with football early and late in the rugby season, or with amateur rugby league through the summer months.

One other piece of not unexpected news is that Swinton have left Leigh Sports Village, and will be using Park Lane, home of Sedgley Park RUFC, as their regular venue. They used the ground a number of times in 2014, and were based there before they went to The Willows. The RFL were reportedly unhappy with the venue for hosting Championship games against teams with a large travelling support, but of course there will be no problem in playing Championship One games there.

Edit to add, so as to keep news of ground changes in one place, that, as has already been reported in other threads, York will be based at the football ground at Bootham Crescent.

South Wales Scorpions, having left Maesteg RUFC, will spend 2015 at Mountain Ash RUFC.

Scorpions have confirmed they are to play North Wales Crusaders at Cardiff Arms Park on May 10th (3pm). The game will form the climax of a triple-header. Cardiff City, a new club, face Valley Cougars at 11am in amateur rugby league's Welsh Conference South. This will be followed by a junior match.

I need Barrow 'and' Whitehaven, and Workington come to that, although I've done it for Speedway. An overnight stay on the edges of the lakes with Barrow and Whitehaven ticked will go down very nicely! Noted in diary date of South Wales Scorpions at the Arms Park as well, excellent.

One wonders why they bothered to demolish it in the first place. It's interesting to see that the BBC and ITV sites show very different pictures of what the rebuilt venue will look like;

No cause for wonderment on your part. DVS was one of British sport's biggest white elephants. Cost 29m to build (at late 1980s prices, for the massively low-profile World Student Games), and most of its 25,000 seats never saw a backside. Upkeep was 700,000 a year, and repairs costing 1.6m were required. The loss-making stadium was useless for any sport other than athletics, which no-one gives a toss about. The poor council tax payers of Sheffield are still paying for it! Whatever comes next HAS to be an improvement.

Is the Woodbourn Road stadium still there? I recall visiting for a Parramore game a few years ago........

It's had a new track put down and is now the new home of the athletics club who used to be at DVS.

Not suitable for Eagles then? Has the pitch been encroached upon?

Not sure if pitch is still original size or whether its still there. Nothing has been done though to the stand or the surrounds, so its probably less of an attraction than Owlerton.

According to today's League Express they are going to share with Doncaster at the Keepmoat.

Also reported that games may be played as double headers - the teams are both due to be at home on the same day for ten of their eleven home fixtures, ie all of them except when they play each other. This would presumably also help Doncaster who were earlier reported to be considering a move to Castle Park due to the costs of operating at the Keepmoat - I assume that will not now happen in 2015.

Meanwhile, the RFL website lists Kingston Park as the home venue for Gateshead Thunder on their fixtures page. I know they played a game there at the end of the 2014 season and there was talk of them moving permanently, but I have been unable to find any confirmation on the Thunder Rugby web page.

Very bad move, a lot of fans won't follow them to Donnie. The Keepmoat is not the easiest place to get to by public transport, especially on a Sunday.

Newcastle Falcons are the owners now of Gateshead Thunder as I understand, so it would make sense to play at Kingston Park, a ground I've yet to visit.

I make that no less than FOUR teams who will be playing their home matches at Keepmoat Stadium next year - Doncaster Rovers, Doncaster Rovers Belles LFC, Doncaster RLFC and Sheffield Eagles. The pitch will end up as bad as Newport's Rodney Parade. Hopefully they will ease the pressure on the Keepmoat pitch by transferring some of the matches to the stadium next door.

As for Gateshead Thunder I believe Kingston Park now has a 3g surface so understandable if Newcastle Falcons want the rugby league club they own to make use of it. Not sure how many of their fans will be willing to make the journey up from Gateshead though.
