Under 18s Youth and Academy venues Can't Post or Reply Privately

A few of us on here attempt to visit Premier Academy/Professional Development League/Youth Alliance fixtures from time to time, but accurate venue information can be hard to find.

Below is the best info I have on where each club currently plays its Under 18s games. Some use more than one home ground during the course of a season, and some apparent groundshares might not use the main pitch at the host club.

More relevantly gents, can we get a definitive list going of grounds where we can actually gain admittance? The sad news that my beloved Watford have now gone down the self indungent route of barring spectators at U18 games has led me to think seriously about just staying where I know I will be welcomed, ie Plymouth, Torquay, Exeter, Bristol City, Rovers when I can find out which ground they are at, West Ham...
I would imagine half the venues listed here are out of bounds, even to those of us with valid press passes

Excellent thread idea.

I can confirm that Orient's detials are correct, but they have been using the training ground at Old Chigwellians recently whilst building work is being carried out at Whitbread's. The youth team manager thanked us for coming to a game earlier in the season, so there is no problem in watching O's youth games.

Dagenham is also correct having moved to Old Parkonians in the summer. The Old Parks people were very welcoming when I visited earlier this season.

Liverpool is correct and I had no problem getting in at their academy.

I will update as and when I (try to) visit somewhere.

My own limited experience of youth and academy grounds over the last three years is;
No problem at all at,
Rotherham United
Chesterfield (although they seem to have moved from the ground I saw them at earlier this season)
Wrexham
Wigan Athletic
Birmingham City
Peterborough United
Aston Villa (u18's but not U21's)
Wolverhampton Wanderers

Access denied at Burton Albion, although others seem to have got in with no problem at all.
Derby County. Wouldn't tell me where their U18 game was being played as ' we don't encourage spectators attending'

These are only my experiences for the last three years. I visited many more clubs before this, but felt it best to keep the information reasonably up to date.

Since this lot ~ http://nonleaguematters.co.uk/...i?post=198639#198639 been to the following with no problem...

Grimsby Town, Lincoln City {former venue}, Chesterfield {2x f.v.}, Notts County {f.v.}, Doncaster Rovers, Mansfield Town {2x f.v.}, Scunthorpe United {f.v.}, Millwall, Barnet, Crystal Palace, Leyton Orient, Huddersfield Town {f.v.}, Dagenham & Redbridge {f.v.}, Southampton, AFC Wimbledon, Gillingham,
and this season ~ Hartlepool United, Burton Albion, York City.

...apart from ~ Millwall {steward on gate}, Crystal Palace {gate firmly closed & stewards very reluctant to open it!}, Burton Albion {security barrier/manned gatehouse - it's a MOD site}

No problems getting in at Cheltenham, Cardiff, Crewe, Nottingham Forest, Walsall and Doncaster. However, Derby confirmed to me by email last season that spectators are not welcome.

Cardiff also advised that they usually start (and end?) the season at South Wales Uni due to Leckwith Stadium being unavailable - presumably due to a clash with athletics.

I can't edit my original post, but I've been told that Bury FC now play Youth Alliance games at Old Boltonians FC, Tower Street, Chapeltown, Turton. Old Boltonians are in the Lancashire Amateur League. This looks to be confirmed by their website/Twitter.

As for getting in, club policies seem to change depending when you go, who you speak to, or even who is on the gate when you get there. I've never yet been turned away, but Brighton have told me I won't get, in and I'm not embarking on a four or five hour journey for a morning game in Sussex when I might not get in to see it.

As a rule, I avoid Premier League clubs if they have first team games on Sundays, especially if they're at home, as there's a chance they'll be training at the youth team venue and unexpected visitors won't be welcome.

Of those with a reputation for sometimes being awkward I had no problems at Chelsea (twice), Arsenal or Reading, I got lucky at Derby (I drove in behind another car when the security gates opened and was never challenged), and I did Crystal Palace's ground for a rep match when it was home to Cuaco FC in the Southern Amateur League. Fortunately I went to many of the bigger clubs before they started tightening up.

Of the grounds I still need, with the exception of Brighton, I don't foresee any problems. I need Colchester (have been before still need the "main" pitch), Swansea, Hartlepool, Cambridge Utd, AFC Bournemouth, Newport and Torquay. Added to that list are Barnet (think they've moved to a new pitch at The Hive, some distance from where I saw them before) and Bristol City, who I think play on an "outside" pitch at the SGS College WISE Campus, judging by recent match highlights on their website.

AFC Bournemouth started the season at Canford Park Arena but have played their last two home matches at Canford School where Cherries used to train before moving 'in-house' to the new facility behind the main stadium. Canford School is on the opposite side of Magna Road to the Arena behind Hamworthy Recreation's ground. Highlights are still available on AFCB website of the match v Cheltenham in September and the recent match v Swindon so you can tell they were played at different grounds, to view click on the match reports in the youth team fixture list.

Man City were fine and from experience, it's only Chelsea and Southampton of the current Premier League teams who categorically say no to people coming along. I've had e-mail correspondence with Chelsea in the past week where I've moaned about their UEFA Youth League matches being played behind closed doors, but I just keep getting a message saying that their training ground is private and nothing more. My dispute is that I've been to UEFA Youth League matches at Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Benfica over the past year and if they openly welcome the public, why should Chelsea be any different ? I think that UEFA and the FA should have the balls to tell Chelsea to admit the public.

Of the FA Premier League Academy teams, Brighton and Derby seem to not want the public to attend.

I told the FA a couple of years ago that it should be mandatory that teamsheets are printed too for youth matches, but they just came out with a mass of excuses.

For the European matches, does the Chelsea training ground meet minimum requirements? This insists on a capacity of 200 (yes, I know all roped off pitches with one long side access achieves this). It also demands 50 VIP seats, and 20 press seats. It does not, however insist on letting the public in!
Surely the solution the the idea that the Chelsea Training ground is private would be to play the games elsewhere?

The main pitch at Cobham is fully enclosed and, when I went in March 2012, had a trio of small stands, which between them will have the required number of seats.

I've attached a pic of the ground, which I took before the third place play off in that year's NextGen Series, between Liverpool and Marseille Under 19s. The capacity wasn't tested, my headcount of the attendance was 40. More were watching Chelsea U18s on a pitch next door.

For the record, absolutely no problems getting in on that occasion.

I've never directly asked Charlton if they let spectators in for the under 18s, but the impression given by the website is that they don't. However the 1pm development squad games actively advertise how to get in. If you're not a season ticket holder at Charlton you'll need to sign up for the Red Card, which is the system they use to identify supporters for first team games. It's free and there's no problem getting a card if you're not local. Admission to development squad games at Sparrows Lane is then free. Do check the club website though, as they occasionally play at the Valley or at Welling. Also note gates open only shortly before kick-off.

If you don't want to faff around with the red card, or don't want a 1pm game that you can't double up with something else, the trick is to keep an eye on pre-season friendlies for the women's team. They, or their reserves, play the odd match at Sparrows Lane if their normal venue isn't available.

Strangely enough I saw the same fixture in December 2012. Like Trevor, i didn't encounter any problems at the venue.

I parked in the road opposite the main entrance. It was certainly busy on the day I visited as the neighbouring Fulham Academy had several training sessions for U-12,U-11,U-10'etc with all their parents & friends seemingly in attendance as well.

I played there many years ago, when it was owned by one of the big insurance companies and the changing facilities were better than I'd experienced at some league grounds. Although the café is usually open if you have time (and with the big match in the area at Kingsmeadow v Harrow spitting distance away easily fitting in to give a couple of hours) further along the road going in the direction of the A3, down the unnamed road on the bend, is Woodies bar where there is always a great range of ales on and classic burgers are a speciality. Better than those at Kingsmeadow and around the same price too.
Walls are covered with hundreds of programmes from a variety of sports, mainly South and West London clubs so always a good read too.

Orient are now back at Whitbread's as of last weekend.
