End of the line for the HST 125 Can't Post or Reply Privately

News today that new Hitachi Class 800 trains are on their way from Japan to Southampton to replace the ageing fleet of British Rail InterCity HST 125s:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-31831603

And here is a great news report from 1976 about the launch of the 125s, including footage of a mid-seventies high-tech radio telephone, the sort that I'm sure Don Quixote would have used at the time to organise his hectic social life! Wink

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HWom31N0Dks

A friend of mine from Swansea still tells me the story of when he first saw a 125 heading out of Swansea, past his school in the trackside suburb of Llansamlet, and how every kid in the classroom charged across to the windows to catch a sight. He said it was like the Space Shuttle landing in South Wales!

Even now, after almost forty years, it is still exciting to see one of these roar at full speed through Didcot Parkway.

Has anyone else got stories to tell about HST 125s?

I doubt very much if the electrification at Paddington will signal the end of the HST, they will be around on the MML for years yet and rumours are that some will end up in Scotland.I personally find them better in every way to the voyagers in these parts.

Ah, if only - I was still lamenting the end of the 'press button A/B' options
around that time.

Love the bit in the interview when the guy says: "at the minute, they
haven't sorted out a proper coin box for it." Quality!

The next bit shows a low shot with a 125 disappearing around a bend...
take a look at the track and sleepers - they look like something that
belongs on an Indian mountain railway - shocking!

I can recall making use of a public phone on a train back from Stafford
in early 1989, which was novel at the time, but cost an arm and a leg and
it needed constantly topping up.

Was a regular (weekly) user most weeks during the football season in the
latter half of the 80s, with events on the outward journey being my only
recollection as I was invariably sleeping off the day's excesses on the return trip.

BR issued a pass/ticket - the name of which I've forgotten - which allowed a third off
all long distance fares at the weekends, which was a major plus and of course
the upgrade to first class was a must - if one wanted to avoid the great unwashed.

One abiding memory was that nobody seemed sure on how to spell Inter City.

It was different on trains, stations and adverts with three versions...
InterCity, Inter City and Inter-City.

HST is a design classic, the standard by which subsequent trains have been judged, and largely found wanting. The Pendolino in particular I'd suggest. It's really only the door arrangements that make them look in any way like old trains. Still, with the MML and the Scottish proposal as others have said, as well as Cross Country's handful and possible continuing use in the South West (though this now seems less likely than it once did) they'll be around for a fair while yet. When the time comes it'll be interesting to see if anyone tries to preserve a full set.

How about services out of Kings Cross to Hull, Sunderland ect?

The HST's Mk3 carriages are more spacious. They are 7" wider at the waist (more at the roof line) than those of the Voyagers and Meridians which have a different profile because they are the same shell as the Pendolinos, built for tilting operation.

But they'll never sound as good as a Western or a Warship...

New trains which have been doing Brighton-Bedford service are also due to transfer to GWR so it's a new look at Padd all around.

Only in Britain can a delivery of new electric trains have to be modified to diesel.

Brand new stuff on the ECML as well!!

The days of knocking the rail network in this country will never go away ( BR sandwich curled up at the edges and all that) but billions have been spent and I think we have a railway to be proud of though I underSTANDBlush how many in the SE would disagree!!

Some of the HST sets are going to Transpennine and Scotrail. There are a lot of new trains coming to the UK, long overdue I might say.
And with the new Thmeslink stock, the rest of the class 319s are going to Northern to use on the Manchester to Blackpool line.

So the SE get new rolling stock while the North have to put up with old clapped out hand-me-downs? It might be of interest to the train operators and the government that the North is no longer coal mines, flat caps, whippets, cobbled streets and steam trains, although we do have those things and by eck wea'ar reet proun' o' 'em

New trains are going to the North as well. class 802 to transpennine, class 195 and 331 for Northern. Mersey rail have drawn up a shortlist to provide new rolling stock.
Virgin Trains East coast getting class 800 ad 801. Abellio Scotrail getting class 385.
Vivarail class 280 is being tested on the Coventry to Nuneaton line later this year by London Midland.

Now looks possible that some HSTs in short formations may be retained in the South West to cover until the post electrification cascade can be completed. At the present rate of progress that might take a while.

I believe these new ones for the Coventry-Nuneaton line are ex LT trains with a diesel engine put in.

Yes, but I like the new look of the train, at least give it a chance. It is only a trail.
Also the class 802 is replacing the rest of the HST sets that go to Cornwall. The 802 is slightly different than the 800 and 801 for some reason it can go to Cornwall.

Have Northern Rail not also purchased some of these LT trains? No idea where they would be used if true.
