Norwich City will be the opposition for Hitchin Town Football Club’s 150 Years Celebration Game in what will be an ‘All Canary Affair’.
Hitchin Town Football Club in partnership with Proceed Archiving Solutions is honoured to be able to announce Norwich City will be coming to Top Field on Tuesday 14th July 2015 to play in our 150 Years Celebration Game.
Hitchin Town Chairman Terry Barratt said “This is absolutely fantastic news, having just won the 2015 Championship Play-off final at Wembley to return to the Premier League, Norwich City are the team everybody is talking about at the moment. We are delighted to have Norwich City Football Club as our opposition for our 150 Years Celebration Game and we would like to thank them for their support of our celebrations.”
A spokesman for Norwich City Football Club said “We’re absolutely delighted to be playing Hitchin Town on the special occasion of their 150th anniversary, what an achievement, and it’s always good to be playing some other Canaries!”
Hitchin Town Secretary Roy Izzard said” It is incredibly rare for a non league club to get the opportunity to play against Premier League opposition and I would like to thank Norwich City for really putting the gloss on our anniversary celebrations by agreeing to bring their first team squad to Hitchin Town .”
The game is just one of a broad range of commemorative events celebrating ‘150 Years of Association Football in Hitchin’ including:
- A 100-page book telling the story of the club - A commemorative programme that includes details of all major events around the celebrations
- A 150 Years Celebration Dinner with Graham Poll as the guest speaker
- A merchandise range to mark the celebrations including Polo Shirts, badges and mugs
- A 150 Prize Draw with over 180 prizes donated by local businesses
The original Hitchin FC were formed in November 1865, played in the very first FA Cup in 1871-72 and apart from a 17-year period between 1911 and 1928, the football club has played an important role in the local community.
A football kit in the original Hitchin FC colours of magenta and white halves has been specially commissioned and will be worn by the Hitchin Town players against Norwich City and subsequently auctioned.
Terry Barratt added “As well as the celebration match we are holding a 150 Years Celebration Dinner on Friday 20th November 2015 at the Sun Hotel in Hitchin and are thrilled to have former international referee and much respected after dinner speaker Graham Poll as guest speaker. We are also extremely grateful to Proceed Archiving Solutions for their support and sponsorship of our 150 Years celebrations”.
Graham Poll is well known to the club, a local man who refereed arguably Hitchin’s finest hour when dumping Football League Division Three side Hereford United out of the FA Cup at Top Field in 1994.
Ticket prices for the 150 Years Celebration Dinner will be £35 and the event is limited to 100 places.
Sixty percent of all proceeds raised from the club’s 150 Years celebrations will be donated to charity. This will be equally split between BBC Children in Need and a local charity, The Garden House Hospice of Letchworth.
