"Outwith" Can't Post or Reply Privately

What is it with Scottish people and this word? Rarely do I hear a Scottish voice on the radio without him or her busting a gut to shoehorn it into a sentence somewhere.

I'm fairly sure I've never once heard it used by an English person in my whole life...

Mind you, I've never heard an English person say they would 'win the weague', either.

About ten years ago I worked with a chap who used it regularly. He came from Surrey or Sussex so I assumed it was a South Eastern thing.

While we're at it where did "ram packed" come from? Completely new to me. Can Scotland be blamed for that when it was Islington's own JC who used it. What's wrong with "jam packed"?

Just wondering.

Whilst over in Dublin recently, visiting the outlaws, I was somewhat taken aback when my lady's father proclaimed " we can't go to Ryan's it'll be black "

I've never considered the old boy to be racist and when I mentioned it to my lady later that evening she couldn't contain her mirth.

Unbeknown to me the term 'black' in Dublin parlance refers to a pub or other venue being "jam packed".

"Black with people" is a phrase in Danish meaning "ram packed".

and on this subject......

Why do people, mainly sports people, keep using 'For Sure', instead of definitely or certainly when being interviewed.

I believe it's an import from Europe, but it really p1sses me off !

Another Scottish word is "internationalist".

I first heard "outwith" when I had a Scottish boss at Securicor. I don't think they're shoehorning it in it's just an everyday word north of the border.

There's a whole lexicon of Scottish football speak.

Would you know what to do with a brief?

My partner is Scottish and believe me, outwith is the least difficult of Scottish words or expressions.....Here are some used regularly....
Muckle= Large
Slitter= dribbled
Next again Day = Tomorrow or day after tomorrow ( still not sure)
Bucket=waste bin
Messages= Shopping
Pieces= Sandwiches
Hoi= Throw out
Skelped=cold/raw skin....or slapped across the face(hence raw skin)
Clapped= stroked ( as in cat/dog)
Old Years Night= New Years Eve
Y'Ken= Y'know
Wheest....shut it! ( e.g chatting to her when Strictly's on !)
Braw= good
Yin= one
twa=two
stays=lives
divnae =don't
div=do ( Scots Borders dialect)

There are loads more. I literally learn a new word most weeks.

More emphatically 'haud yer wheesht"

greet - to cry
cry - to call "wit dae ye cry yer dug?"

I'm not sure if this is mainly Ayrshire

I'm are - Yes I am.
I'm arenae - No, I'm not.

If you're into the various Scandi-noir TV series you'll hear whole sentences which could be Scots.
