That's correct.

If Peterborough won or it was a draw they went through.

If Telford won it went to golden goal over time.

If no-one scored in overtime it went to penalties.

Another triumph for the EPL.

In perhaps the least surprising bit of news for a while, the EIHA have ruled the retrospective penalties against Telford and Manchester are unacceptable and that the top 8 will be in the playoffs. Telford have already qualified, Manchester won't make the cut.

English National League Division 1 South

Solent Devils 4 Streatham (Redhawks) 1

Admission 9-00 inc programme attendance est 230
Two weeks ago second-place Invicta were demolished 8-2 here, today another great result for the Devils against third-place Streatham.
The scoreline was rather flattering in that Devils were outshot 48-33 and netminder C.Cole and his defence had to perform heroics sometimes against a visiting side who lacked their touch in front of goal.
The game started a few mins late without the National Anthem because Streatham came out late due to 'dressing room issues'.
The first period was fairly even, Facey giving the home side the lead and Scarborough hitting the post for the Wings late on.
In the second period the visitors were slightly better and got the equaliser, but Devils went ahead again soon after to make it 2-1 at the end.
In the third period Streatham had most of the play and most of the shots but a 'bomb from the blue line' (as the announcer described it) from Lock extended the lead, and a classic break saw Facey make it 4-1, a lead they held to the end. Amazingly (with Evans as ref) the first penalty came on 43 mins, there could have been several called before this but the officials had decided no a free-flowing game. It was on that first power play (the only one the Devils had in the whole game) that Lock scored probably the decisive goal.
A very different visiting team to the one I saw before Christmas (the game notorious for the bottle-throwing by Murray after disgraceful provocation) because they have picked up the largest number of Wightlink Raiders after their demise (several of their fans here tonight), due I suspect to coach Cornish also choosing to make Streatham his base.
One other bizarre fact: four Devils players were in action yesterday for Manchester Phoenix of the EPL! Such are the Phoenix's financial troubles and such is the keenness to enable them to finish their season that they are allowed to borrow players to make up a decent-sized squad. Yesterday with the help of Solent and Oxford, they only lost 5-1 at Bracknell, tonight they had help from Bristol and Bradford and lost 3-11 to the Swindon Wildcats.

Manchester Phoenix have withdrawn from the league tonight. Their results will be expunged meaning Milton Keynes move a couple of points closer to current league leaders Telford.

English Premier League

Basingstoke Bison 7 Hull Pirates 1

admission 16-50 inc internet booking fee, programme 2-50,
attendance est 1400 (still one side out of use)
4th/9 v 6th/9
Hull started the season really well, third in November. Then they blew up, the coach has been recently replaced, and results have improved slightly.
Tonight's result was totally down to poor defending, because they always looked dangerous in attack.
Two weeks ago they lost 1-6 here and were outshot 21-70. Today it was 1-7 but only 27-28.
It was 2-0 to Bison at the end of the first as they were troubled frequently by the visitors' breaks but finished better. One goal was shorthanded.
In the second Bison's Towalski received a match penalty for spearing, but Bison were the ones to score, again shorthanded. Hull pulled a goal back but two good moves gave Antonov two goals to complete a hat-trick on his return to the team after playing for GB in the Winter Universiade.
Bison looked more comfortable in the third period which got quite tasty, at one point there were two separate fights in front of the Bison bench, and there were a few other incidents. Two late goals on the powerplay near the end completed the scoring for Bison. Antonov got his fourth.
Numerous delays tonight - at one point the ice needed fixing, another saw the player's gate need fixing, Bison's Scott seemed to get an elbow and was taken off very groggy, and, of course, the bouts of handbags in the final period. Hull are at home to Bison tomorrow so there might be a few things remembered from tonight.

EPL 11/2 11.95
Guildford Flames 4 Telford Tigers 9
Att 1784

With Flames possibly off to the EIHL and a possible step 2 re-org that could see North / South conferences this may have been Telford's last trip to the Spectrum.

Guildford didn't turn up until second period by which point they were 5-0 down to an impressive Telford unit. Credit to Guildford for pulling it back to 4-5. A late 2nd period goal for Telford was crucial, giving them breathing space. They slowed the game down in the 3rd period and always looked likely to come home ahead.

This is a hugely impressive Telford team. Their financial antics will make them topping the table highly unpopular but the team deserve real respect. Given how poor Dean Skinns was it seems the Flames coaches have a real downer on their back up given they didn't ice him. are underperforming badly, their fans aren't happy that the powers to be don't seem to be questioning the coaching.

Admission 9-00 inc programme attendance est 150
7th v 4th
Cracking game, played at a high tempo throughout, a draw the correct result.
Devils took the lead after 11 mins, a great run and shot by Trendall, but Edwards equalised quickly with another good shot. Facey's cool finish gave the home team the lead at the end of the first. In the second, a comedy turn between NM Annetts and his defender gave Murray the chance to make it 3-1 shorthanded, but again Stars reduced the deficit quickly - Hopkins this time. 3-2 going into the third, which began slightly more slowly but soon built up a head of steam, attacks at both ends, last ditch defending, shots blocked, saved, missed.... Green equalised with 8 mins to go and it became even more frantic - Devils had a powerplay for the last two mins but despite their efforts, it ended 3-3.
Oxford seem to have gained a bit of a following - 40-50 fans came down today. Ref Evans was particularly fussy tonight but despite his frequent attempts to slow the game down with petty decisions, but the players (and spectators) came out on top tonight.

Guildford and MK confirmed as off to the Elite league. Guildford were not totally sold on this if they were happy with the new level 2 proposals so I suspect an import cut looms at level 2. The EPL currently has just 7 members if it plays next season.

English National League Division 1 South

Solent Devils 5 Milton Keynes Thunder 2

Admission 9-00 inc programme attendance est 120
7th v 6th/8
These two played last night at MK, Devils apparently lucky to get a 4-3 victory. Today's win means they are now level on points but Devils have two games in hand, so it looks like 6th place secured. Playoffs will be either Invicta or Streatham.
This game was played at the usual frantic pace, lots of scrapping for the puck, lots of goalmouth incident, but all played in a sporting spirit.
Thunder hit the post after 30 seconds and Devils scored after 1:30. They added to that 12 mins later but the score flattered them at the end of the first period.
Devils had lots of pressure at the start of the second but seemed reticent to shoot. Thunder came back into it and were more willing to shoot, most notably with the equaliser from the blue line with 10 seconds to go in the period.
It was even in the third until Petts (who played for Basingstoke last night) suddenly broke on the left and fired a shot across NM Wride to give Devils the lead again. Two more goals in the last four mins sealed the win, the first causing some amusement as two rebounds meant that Wride didn't know where the puck was until it was in the net.
As Roger D says, Guildford join MKL in the Elite next season; everyone in the EPL and the NIHL1/2 are awaiting the fallout from that. It may mean that British players are available as the new Elite teams replace theirs with imports. We may see MK Thunder strengthen enough with ex-MKL players to go into the EPL. Bracknell (Bees and Hornets) might also combine resources. I'm guessing! I do expect to be seeing a few new teams next season, and hope to see some Elite games at last.

English National League Division 1 South

Solent Devils 3 Invicta Dynamos 2

Admission 9-00 inc programme attendance est 200
6th v 2nd/8
Great game, another top team bites the dust at the Gosport Arena. Mos had senationally lost 2-8 here a couple of months ago, and were clearly out for revenge.
In a fast first period they were clearly the dominant side and outshot Devils 21-7. It remained goalless due to determined Devils defence and excellent netminding. We had a few handbags as Mos got frustrated.
The visitors eventually took the lead after 9 mins of the second and we expected them to increase it. But Devils became more dangerous on the break and two goals around the halfway mark turned it round, one by Doughty after a scramble and one after a really good move. The momentum was with the home team, but they lost it by a silly penalty for too many men on the ice. However, another classic break and nice pass near the end of the second saw Lawday get his second goal and made it 3-1.
The final period was again in the visitors' favour, although again good defence and netminding denied them until two dubious penalties (another fussy performance by Mr. Evans) on 51 mins left Mos 5 on 3. They got one goal back but failed to get another in a wildly exciting last few minutes where they threw everything at the home team, who had several chances to seal the match on the break too. But the final buzzer sounded to great applause from a good crowd.

Major changes for next season - imagine this in a football context!

Last season we had these leagues:
Elite
EPL
NIHL 1 (N/S)
NIHL 2 (N/S)

Next season we will have:
Elite
NIHL 1 (N/S)
NIHL 2 (N/S?)

The Elite comprises the same ten teams as last season, plus Guildford Flames and MK Lightning from the EPL.

The remaining seven teams in the EPL tried to form a second tier but didn't manage to, therefore they have combined with last season's NIHL1.
Not all leagues have met yet to decide on their constitution, but the NIHL1 South was revealed at the weekend as:

Conference A
Oxford City Stars
Bracknell Bees *
Basingstoke Bison *
Milton Keynes Thunder
Solent Devils
Cardiff Fire

Conference B
Peterborough Phantoms *
Swindon Wildcats *
Invicta Dynamos
Streatham RedHawks
London Raiders
Chelmsford Chieftains

* means EPL last season; the rest were NIHL1 last season.
Import limit appears to be set at two.

This means my local team Solent, who pay to play in a small 400-capacity rink, will play teams like Basingstoke and Swindon next season!

NIHL1 North and the rest have yet to be confirmed. Some teams e.g. Telford Tigers already have an NIHL team (although they may be a different organisation) so sorting that out might be tricky.

I should never be surprised about what happens in ice hockey...but, inevitably, I always am!

Streatham have gone from being a contender to bog-standard cannon fodder with this re-organisation.

Quite simply, I shall probably end up watching much fewer hockey games next season as a result.

Yes, I expect there will be some large scores next season.

However, with two imports only, it looks as if the whole league is going to be skewed towards the NIHL model rather than the EPL model.

Basingstoke, for example, will have 12 fewer home games then in the EPL, probably less fans, and they will have to drop their entrance prices, so they will have less income.
Not sure how sponsorship will go. They will have more local players and British players. Good British players may still play in the league but there will be less money to pay them.

So it may not be as much of a mismatch as all that for teams like Streatham, who already have that model, and can hope for even bigger crowds.
Not sure where it leaves teams like Solent yet. Not sure if they can even handle 'all ticket' games.

And then, if the EPL is resurrected again in a year or two's time, they'll have to do it all over again!

Solent Devils have announced that they are withdrawing from the new NIHL1 South, and will apply to the NIHL2 because they can't afford the new competition:

http://www.solentdevils.co.uk/news/solent-devils-press-release-1805637.html

They may not be the only ones. It's a complete farce. There will be so much going on, I won't post any more until just before the season starts, and we may have a clearer picture.

Losing Oxford was a blow to the NIHL1S, but serial champions Chelmsford have now also requested a move to NIHL2, again for the same reasons.

We could end up with the NIHL1S consisting of the EPL teams from last season, plus a couple of others. Maybe they'll go back to the EPL name!

At the risk of tempting fate, here is the new NIHL2 lineup to reflect what we've been saying:

Basingstoke Buffalo
Bristol Pitbulls
Bracknell Hornets
Cardiff Fire 2
Chelmsford
Guildford Phoenix
Haringey
Invicta Mustangs
Lee Valley Lions
Oxford City Stars
Peterborough Phantoms 2
Slough Jets
Solent Devils
Swindon Wildcats 2

Chelmsford and Oxford have had to 'consolidate' their clubs in order to be playing at this level.

That leaves 9 teams still playing at NIHL1S level (so far).
Apart from the ex-EPL clubs in this division, Streatham appear to have been signing some good players.

My first ever live Ice Hockey match, taking advantage of a free night out with the family whilst oh holiday in Chamonix. About 300 turned up and it was a great entertainment. The Danes looked the more technically gifted team but the French took their chances and when the 60 minutes were up they lead 4-2. There was then a discussion between the coaches and officials and an additional 5 minutes of overtime was played, with both teams fielding three players plus the netminder. The Danes scored after 2 minutes and the game finished. Not being a follower of Ice Hockey not sure if this is a regular occurrence or not but it seemed a bit odd - perhaps regular Hockey fans can enlighten me!

This was the first of three matches played between the nations on consecutive evenings at the Chamonix rink.

Not being a follower of Ice Hockey not sure if this is a regular occurrence or not but it seemed a bit odd - perhaps regular Hockey fans can enlighten me!

This was the first of three matches played between the nations on consecutive evenings at the Chamonix rink.

I can only suggest that the finial score was not 4-2 but level, as in such event 5 minutes extra time is played, usually 4 on 4 Skaters, before going to a shoot out, usually best of three. However the extra time is sudden death, which sounds about right on this occasion.

Thanks for responding. That all sounded very logical and I wondered if I had got the score wrong. However, had a look at hockeyfrance.com to double-check and this shows the score in thirds as 1-1; 3-0; 0-1 - as I recorded it. No mention of the overtime in the report and the goal not credited to Denmark. Never mind, didn't make any difference to the result on the night, and for the record the French won the other games as well.
