Heard a source say that it was 40 years ago today, on Tuesday 8th February 1977, that the album 'Marquee Moon' by Television was first released in America... (though other sources I've seen have it as later in the month, and it didn't reach the UK until 4th March, so I'll keep that one in the oven for a another day or so...)

And instead go for...

Billy Ocean ~ 'Red Light Spells Danger'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VgqWMEBQgUA

...which was released in February 1977 and appeared on Top Of The Pops later in April.

Listened to it again last night. Brilliant album.

Saw Television in Birmingham at the Odeon on 27 May 1977. Wonderful band. A little known group called Blondie were the support.

Forty years ago today, on Thursday 10th February 1977, recording started on The Clash's debut album 'The Clash'. Recording took place over three weekends at CBS Studios in London and the National Film & Television School in Beaconsfield, costing a total of only 4000 and finishing on 27th February...

From the album...

On Saturday 12th February 1977, 40 years ago today, this was played over the tannoy on my very first visit to Fratton Park for my first ever football match...

Mike Oldfield ~ 'Portsmouth'

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1L50IwGW7qp

In the UK top forty at the time, it had reached a high of no.3 in the charts in early January. It's not the only record that has greeted Pompey onto the pitch - predictably, Tina Turner's 'Simply The Best' and Frankie Goes To Hollywood's 'Two Tribes' were used at points in the early nineties - but it has been the first choice more often than not.

And this is what it sounds like at Wembley Stadium!...

Top of the charts for four weeks through January, and in the top three for a further three weeks in February 1977, 'Don't Give Up On Us' by David Soul. It eventually sold over 1.16 million copies to become the second-biggest selling single of the year in the UK, beaten only by'Mull Of Kintyre' by Wings.

However, much more in keeping with my own childhood memories of 1977 would be this...

That 1977 Valentine's chart is full of slushy love songs. Good job then to see an act making their UK Chart debut that week at number 49 - the Stranglers

Re: [Richard Rundle] Musical Snapshot [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

Tuesday 15th February 1977, forty years ago today, was reportedly the day bass-player Glen Matlock left Sex Pistols. With Matlock being the band's only member with any musical ability, replacing him with the heroin-addicted beer-glass-lobbing thug Sid Vicious (who couldn't even play an instrument! Even Ringo Starr could play the tambourine!) was always going to end in disaster.

Reasons for Matlock's departure ranged from a clash of personality with Johnny Rotten, reportedly being caught listening to TheBeatles, and even his foot hygiene habits!

Whatever the reason, here are Sex Pistols with Matlock from just before the split...

Also in the news on 15th February 1977...

The space shuttle first test flight taxi atop a Boeing 747 took place.

And the plastersine character Morph appeared on 'Take Hart' for the very first time!

Out of time then, as 1975 was an actual Year of the Cat.
The Cat takes the place of the Rabbit in some countries in South East Asia, particularly Viet Nam.

Superb live and seems a genuinely nice guy.
Possibly the campest straight man I have seen in some while!

Knew him well from the Troubador Club in Bristol in the late 1960s and early 1970s. Going to see him in Bristol in April.

Sadly Isaac Guillory, who appeared on the Year of the Cat album is no longer with us.

First heard the other hit single from that album "on the border" whilst sunning myself by a pool in Ibiza; the Spanish bar staff loved the record and it was played every hour on their bar cassette tape.

Happy memories.
