39th game playoff? Can't Post or Reply Privately

Apparently, should Swansea and Hull finish joint 18th, level on points, goal difference and goals scored they will play off at a neutral venue to decide who goes down.

https://www.theguardian.com/...-relegation-play-off

There's a few games to be played before we arrive at that scenario. Middlesbrough might have a say for starters.

And why don't they use head to head records as the next tiebreaker before having to resort to playoffs?

Just because you're paranoid, it doesn't mean they're not out to get you.

Head to head works just fine elsewhere but this is the EPL we are talking about here, the biggest best and most famous league in the history of the world game so doing that would never be acceptable.

And with that in mind it would mean an unexpected day out in HA9 for the lucky participants.

Presumably they mean joint-17th, as joint-18th would mean they both go down anyway.

They could call it the 20 million pound game.

Head-to-head is irrelevant, and is only accepted because it's easy to understand. If you are tied on points and goal-difference (and goals scored, of course, but that's only in there as a very mild encouragement for attacking football and is no indicator of the standard of a team) then if you perform better in the head-to-head you must, by definition, have performed worse in the rest of the games. Sporting integrity suggests that teams be judged on how they perform in a competition when they know the rules. You can't have teams play a league competition and then go back and re-use results for a knock-out competition. After all, a team looking to avoid relegation may be looking to protect the status quo, and therefore be looking to avoid defeat, rather than looking to win. While that position is easy to criticise from a populist point of view, it's entirely reasonable if you want to avoid the drop. That could then end up resulting in an aggregate defeat.

Head to head is by far the simplest solution and if the rules are in place at the start of the season I really don't see what the problem is.

Simple but flawed, as illustrated. I hadn't thought of it like that previously but cope1's points are compelling.

That's his opinion to which he is of course entitled but I don't agree. The situation is unlikely to arise anyway.

He's citing facts. Presumably the same facts which underpin the current rule that disregards head to head in such circumstances. But of course you can reach a different opinion based on the same set of facts.

I would guess with Wembley in constant use Villa Park would be the venue.

And will Manchester and Liverpool have to play also, to determine 3rd and 4th.(and who has to qualify for Europe)
City only 3 points behind Liverpool but with a game in hand and a goal difference of just 1 behind Liverpool.

Why has this all come up now as its never been needed in 129 years?
More sensationalist newspaper reporting I would suspect.

Probably right as Wembley has to be booked months in advance. There was an issue regarding the Conference National play-off final a couple of years ago and a change of date was impossible so the league was told.

Another playoff situation will arise, this time for 4th place, if Arsenal v Everton ends 1-1 and Liverpool lose 0-2 at home to Middlesbrough (or 2-2/1-3 etc) in the last games of the season.

There's a couple of other potential play-off scenarios:

1) Watford 3-3 Man C and Liverpool 3-0 M'boro would see Liverpool and Man C play-off for 3rd place

2) Watford 4-0 Man C and Arsenal 1-0 Everton would see Man C and Arsenal play-off for 4th if Liverpool beat M'boro, or 3rd if they don't

Well, there has to be some excitement in the last round of fixtures with pretty much everything already settled

Although this didn't happen would there be support for a relegation play-off between the clubs finishing 17th and 18th anyway? Not from the clubs involved obviously but two "120million games" or whatever the prize money is these days on the same weekend would be a crowd drawer.

Indeed.

July 1, 2019 to June 30,2020 = 87 / 75 / 12 / inc 3 x 0-0's. (You know my rules) @ 14 / 10 / 2019.
2019/20. Benelux = Bel = 0-0-0-(I(MUI-I)-0-0)-(0-2-1-1)/ Lux = 0-2 / Neth = 0-0-0-(1 - 2) Others France = 0-0 / Germany =0-0-0 / Italy =0-1(Act 2- Frosinone new)./ Iberia = P = 0-0 & S = 0-0.

The whole idea of play offs is not for me but in this money orientated world there here to stay.
