The following is from the working time directive, you should have a 20 minute break if you work more than 6 hours:
a limit of an average 48 hours a week on the hours a worker can be required to work, though individuals may choose to work longer by "opting out"
paid annual leave of 5.6 weeks' a year
11 consecutive hours' rest in any 24-hour period
a 20-minute rest break if the working day is longer than six hours
one day off each week
a limit on the normal working hours of night workers to an average eight hours in any 24-hour period, and an entitlement for night workers to receive regular health assessments.

A rather over simplification of the law, but basically right except for -
[a] Opting out of the 48 hour week must be in writing and the 48 hour week is taken on an average of 17 consecutive weeks.
The annual leave of 5.6 weeks per year includes Bank and Public Holidays, plus any time that the employers are not working in a normal working week, eg if they decide to close one Friday that can be included in the annual leave allowance.
[c] There are a lot of occupations exempt from the Act including the armed forces, emergency workers, security guards, etc.

Beware of companies that break the rules "to get the job done". Rules are generally there for a reason and being willing to break one sort of rule could lead to getting sloppy with critically important ones.

My grandfather was killed at a colliery when safety rules were in force in name only. That attitude killed him. That and the two railway trucks.

I hope whoever was sacked will report him to the HSE.

They should also take your employer to a tribunal for unfair dismissal.

The story below is relevant and perhaps worth remembering on election day, especially as a couple of parties have promised to abolish tribunal fees to make justice more accessible for workers.

I can imagine. Dealing with the big companies from the contract management side, it's very rare to see one do a good job...

If you want to be mollycoddled, go work in a library.

My wife works in a library, and by some of the stories she tells it sounds like a war zone most of the time. There's no way I'd swap with her, because I'd probably end up lamping the little brats.

Our local library have had to call the police on a few occasions to remove trouble makers.

These type of regulations will be the first to be got rid of once we come out of the EU. And working folk think it is a good idea to come out of the EU, you couldn't make it up.
