For my counting, am I right in thinking one groundsharer in each division (Blyth and Durham)

Yes, in terms of groundshares within the Northern League anyway (Ponteland United share with West Allotment Celtic, Sunderland West End with Washington for example). Team North's departure was a shock to their players, let alone everyone else.

Yes, and two more of the clubs are on grounds that I have visited, but not for that club's home games.(Washington at Nissan, Billingham Synthonia at Norton & Stockton).

Im guessing this will likely mean only one relegation spot in Division One

I asked Matt Edkins at the FA & he said that it’ll be a League Committee decision. So again, clubs will probably find out their fate after the end of the season. That’ll be the same for step 6.

So whoever finishes 18th is going to have to play the waiting game

The standardised rules, states that the bottom 2 teams will be relegated. But unless the FA clarifies the relegation criteria, then the 18th placed clubs in the NL & HL will have no idea if they are relegated or not. There could be a situation, whereby the clubs end up being relegated & have no idea that they were in any danger of going down. I hope the leagues ask the question & this isn’t the case!

I think once the season has started the LC might make it clear what will happen at the bottom of NL and HL step 5.
Surely both leagues will press for an answer.

The FA's idea of "2 down 3 up" between Steps 5 & 6 always seemed illogical to me. It'll only work where you've got 2 Step 5s with 3 Step 6s feeding solely into to 2 of them.
Anybody know of a place where this is the case?

3rd placed step 6 teams aren’t going to be promoted under the new standardised rules. The FA are either going to relegate 26 or 28 step 5 teams. Replace them with the 19 step 6 champions & either the 9 or 11 best runners up on a ppg basis. If the FA relegates the bottom 2 NL1 sides & only the NL2 champions are promoted(not the runners up). Also, no northeastern clubs are relegated or demoted from step 4. Then the NL1 will have only 17 clubs & the FA will laterally transfer 3 step 5 league clubs. So teams like Knaresborough, Harrogate RA will be playing NL next seasonShocked

Could drag the Northern League southwards again. They won't like that, not would the teams sent north

This evening the league has tweeted official confirmation that division 1 will run with 19 clubs. From that, I assume attempts were made to get it back up to 20.

The imbalance of step 5/6 divisions is most acute in the North West and Midlands - if the top 2 are promoted in the NW1's, East Mids, WMRL and Midland League, there'll be some big transfers required. Unless the 2nd NL2 is promoted, NL1 will be expanding and this will continue in future years, however silly it is. It's the folly of implementing pooling on a lopsided setup. If they're very lucky, Cleator Moor or Carlisle City will come up from NWC1N.

FA permission needed, clubs impacted would need to change their preparations for the new season, fixtures to be re-done, etc etc. Team Northumbria did leave it rather late..

Speaking of preparations, champions Marske haven't registered enough players with the NPL in time to play tomorrow's traditional NL curtain raiser, the Cleator Cup, meaning the match with cup winners Dunston has been cancelled.

As I understood it the only changes allowed after the AGM relate to internal movements. Therefore moving a club from the lower division to the higher would only need the correct grading for it to take place.

There are always changes after AGMs.
If the FA want it and it does not cause too much trouble to do it then the change occurs.

The way I see it, is that the LC controls the promotion & relegation process between steps 5 & 6. It wouldn’t surprise me if the EBAC NL approached the FA & asked if Washington could be reprieved. It wouldn’t surprise me if they also asked if Darlington RA could also be reprieved. I bet the FA’s response was ‘no, it’s too late’!

I think you are probably correct.
However given the LC obsession with uniformity i would have expected the NL and HL running their step 5 with 19 teams teams to be a major source of disappointment to them.

Strong rumours circulating the northeast, are that Barry Elliott has pulled his money from Blyth AFC & they are just about to resign from the NL. Allegedly he’s been turned down for planning permission for a new ground. Also Ashington turned down a takeover from him.
