Island Games 2019 Can't Post or Reply Privately

Afternoon all.
As was thought to the case, Ynys Mon will be hosting the 2019 Island Games football tournament. This is due to the fact that Gibraltar cannot host the tournament during the regular Island Games next summer. As is normal with events taking place outside of the main Island Games event, the tournament will be labelled as the Inter Games Football. The dates will be 15-22 June. Details on grounds and sides entering will be confirmed later on, but I do know that both tournaments (men's and women's) will have at least the minimum of four sides.

Draw now made, showing that entries have a strong British Isles slant overall, but include a debut for St Helena.

Has Ynys Mon ever hosted the tournament in the past and if so, what were the venues? I would expect Holyhead to stage many of the matches. Of course, they could cheat a bit and play some games at Bangor.

I'm looking at going to the 20th & 21st and stop over inbetween.
Not sure if these are the final KO times as it has been posted on the Ynys Mon Twitter page that they may be subject to change to allow people to get to as many games as practically possible.
Fine as they are for me as I don't think I could watch more than 3 matches in a day anyway.

I quite fancy attending this but am wondering what the venues are like, stadiums or little more than park pitches, which makes it less appealing.

Any info appreciated

Re: [moondog] Inter Islands Football Tournament 2019 [In reply to] Can't Post or Reply Privately

I've been to all these grounds, but in some cases it was a few years ago, so there may have been changes in the interim. None are merely "park pitches", all are enclosed grounds with railed pitches. Some have lights, most have some form of cover. Almost all are wonderfully rural and scenic. From memory, these are the facilities -

Llangefni - one of the better grounds, befitting for one that has hosted Welsh Prem football, albeit only for one season. Floodlights, cover on all 4 sides (IIRC).

Aberffraw - lovely rural ground. No cover, but there's a tea bar. Stunning views.

Holyhead Hotspur - large seated stand on one side, but no other cover. Floodlights.

Cemaes Bay - another ground that has hosted top flight Welsh football, but it was more than 20 years ago when ground grading wasn't such an issue. Wonderfully ramshackle cover on 3 sides. Floodlights.

Bodedern - couple of small stands. Characterful ground hemmed in by stone walls.

Gwalchmai - 3 small areas of covered terracing on the sides.

Glantraeth - lovely rural ground, remote from any centre of population. Small cover on one side, plenty of hard standing.

Llanerchymedd - another very rural ground, outside the small town next to a farm. One seated stand.

Gaerwen - very smart ground with 3 areas of cover including seats.

Amlwch - basic ground with a "world's end" feel to it. Enclosed, part railed, tea bar, not much else.

Bro Goronwy - another lovely rural ground. No cover. Narrow pitch tightly surrounded by stone walls.

I thoroughly recommend a trip to this part of the world. Have a read of some of the WDYG posts on here for some more ground descriptions, and look on Google Maps for aerial views. If anyone wants any more information on the grounds, locations etc please let me know.

Just to put my two pennies in...

I had some input on the scheduling of these fixtures. The Sunday we have stretched so that groundhoppers can watch four games on that day. We'd have loved to have stretched the mid-week games to have earlier kick off times and stagger them but the main issue is the availability of officials for the matches and also the local volunteers that run these clubs. Hope everyone enjoys the tournament, it should be a good taster for the full Island Games in Anglesey in 2025.

Thanks for clarification, as expected there were external factors affecting scheduling. Was hoping to get to the games on the Sunday but it clashes with Fathers Day (will mention that I'd like to go with the kids and see what happens)!

Are there any posters in that part of the world, that can give an update on how the weather has been? I suspect some games would fall victim to waterlogged pitches if they were being played here in Brum.

The last week or so has been absolutely appalling here in NE Wales. Ridiculous amounts of rain and plenty of flooding. I think Anglesey might have been slightly better. The forecast for the next few days is improving.
