Noel White (1929-2019) has sadly died at the age of 89.
Noel White (Altrincham and Liverpool chairman)
Although he was apparently a pretty decent footballer, being a professional at Chester for a season, although he didn't appear in the first team, he will be best remembered for football administration.
He and his business partner, Peter Swales, rescued a moribund Altrincham in 1961. White was vice-chairman for six years, before becoming chairman in 1967 when Swales departed for Manchester City.
In his lengthy spell as chairman he oversaw the most successful period in the club's history, with the club also being successful financially.
This success had not gone unnoticed by Football League clubs and, after rejecting earlier suitors, he joined Liverpool as a director in 1986, serving as chairman from 1990 to 1991, and remaining as a director until 2006.
In club football, he played a part in the formation of the Northern Premier League, the Alliance Premier League and the F.A. Premier League, but he was also very active in the F.A. where he was chairman of the FA International Committee from 1994 to 2008.
He received the British Empire Medal for services to football in 2013, and remained in the honorary position of chairman of Altrincham until his death.
