George Smith (Birmingham, Gillingham, Stalybridge, Mossley, Buxton, Altrincham) Can't Post or Reply Privately

George Smith, who has died at the age of 83, is the third person with strong Altrincham connections to have died in the last few days.

The Irish goalkeeper, after spells with Manchester United and Oldham Athletic as an amateur, turned professional with Birmingham City, but doesn't seem to have played in the first team.

Subsequently, after a spell at Gillingham, he went around the Cheshire County League, playing for Stalybridge Celtic, Mossley, Stalybridge again, then Buxton, before joining Altrincham as reserve goalkeeper in 1965.

However, he displaced former England international Colin McDonald in the very successful 1965-66 season, playing in the F.A. Cup tie against Wolves, and retained his place for a couple more years.

Later, he managed Stalybridge Celtic and coached in Saudi Arabia and Iceland.

He managed Hyde United for half a season immediately before nipping over to Saudi.

RIP.
